You start as normal, with a quest book to guide you, with one goal: get to the end of it.
Many (mostly endgame) crafting recipes have been tweaked, hopefully for the better, to make it less grindy and more about exploration and new places. It is greatly advised to follow the quest book as some recipes will need the previous one, even if barely related, as long as it makes sense.
