What's new

Changelog in EN:
R2.2.1 “Living Winter”
Why this name? Based on the version number, it’s a hotfix, and that’s how it should be presented. But most importantly, players will feel the changes it brings from day one: winter is no longer just a static backdrop. Five types of weather, a realistic sun, changing seasons, and a tool to predict them. “Living Winter” perfectly captures exactly what has changed in the feel of the game.

Winter no longer stands still: five types of weather, a real sun, a five-day weather forecast—and a quarter of the frames that were previously being consumed by an incorrectly assembled shader preset.
❄️ Dynamic Weather
Previously, Primal Winter behaved simply: clear skies until day 160, followed by an endless storm that never changed. After a couple hundred days, that wasn’t weather anymore—it was just a static background.

Now there are five weather fronts: Clear, Cloudy, Snowfall, Blizzard, and Black Blizzard. Each has its own snow, fog, visibility, and temperature—ranging from +0.20 on a clear day to −0.55 in a blizzard. Snowfall intensity fluctuates throughout the day: it intensifies and then subsides.

Winter arrives gradually, rather than being switched on suddenly. Instead of a sudden change on day 160, there are four distinct phases. In the first forty days, blizzards and snowstorms aren’t “rare”—they’re impossible: −0.35 on the third day without a stove or warm clothes is a death sentence, not a test. By day 160, everything returns to its former harshness. The later part of the game hasn’t changed—what’s changed is what came before it.

The sun has returned. The clear days are real, with a clear sky. They’re rare: in eternal winter, one in twenty. That’s exactly why you remember them.

🧭 Barometer
A brass device with its own interface. Right-click for a five-day forecast: today, tomorrow, and three days from now. Hover your cursor over it in your inventory to see today and tomorrow without opening anything.

The forecast is accurate. The in-game weather isn’t a roll of the dice, but a function of the current day’s number, so the device calculates exactly what the server will apply. It doesn’t “guess”—it knows.

⛏️ Ore: Why It Was Hard to Find
The most common complaint after R1.2 went like this: “With Immersive Geology, it’s become much harder—I can’t find iron, copper, or gold.” The complaint is valid, and there were three reasons for it right away.

The mod removes the vanilla ores and replaces them with real minerals. Iron becomes hematite and magnetite; copper becomes cuprite and chalcopyrite. Someone who’s been mining in Minecraft for years sees a wall of unfamiliar rock and assumes the world was generated incorrectly.

The vanilla iron and copper have been restored. Each of the 42 ores now identifies itself: hover your cursor over it to see the metal and its depth.

Three new chapters in the questbook, 48 quests. “Geology” guides you through a step-by-step process and explains where to dig: ore lies in veins, so you need to dig sideways, not downward. “Refining” introduces machines. “Field Medicine” covers triage and a medical map that reads your injuries.

And the main thing that was holding people back: none of the sixteen machines in the mod has a crafting recipe. They’re all assembled according to the diagrams in the engineer’s manual—and the manual wasn’t mentioned once in the quest log. Players would search for the Blomeria recipe, not find it, and conclude that the machine was unavailable. Now the manual has its own quest at the beginning of the chapter.

Steel is no longer locked behind Nezer. The recipe required Nezer bricks—in a package designed to ensure you can’t leave this area.

⚡ Performance
There weren’t enough frames on hardware that had nothing to work hard for. The solution was found in the shader preset scale: the “High” preset delivered the shader author’s maximum profile, while “Extreme” went even beyond that. The scale was shifted up by two levels—people on “High” were rendering at “Ultra” settings.

After re-linking to the author’s profiles, about a quarter of the frames returned with the same settings, and the image remained unchanged.

Also from this section: Distant Horizons and Snow! Real Magic have been removed (measured: DH on six cores performs worse than not having it on sixteen), Java arguments have been switched to the correct profile, and the preset ladder no longer breaks when the shader is updated.

🎨 Visuals
Color and mood used to vary between presets—the twenty-five settings ranged from “dull” to “extreme,” even though none of them was worth even a microsecond. The intended look simply didn’t exist.

Now there’s just one preset for all five: cold, blue—not gray. Atmospheric fog is enabled—the main tool for creating atmosphere in the frozen world, which had previously been turned off everywhere.

🔧 Silent Bugs
A quick note for the sake of honesty: several systems in the build weren’t working at all and didn’t even look broken. The survivor’s HUD would crash on a single word. The weather had been dead for two development cycles, and everything that seemed to be working came from other sources.

All of these have been fixed, and the build engine has learned to catch this class of errors in advance—four automatic checks, each of which exists because what it catches has already made it to players at some point.
