Centuries past are the days of balance. When light and dark was held in a perfect equilibrium, cycling through day and night routinely. Neither side had complete control. Neither side dominated. That all changed when one night, the sun just didn't rise. That night has been going on for centuries. Without the balance brought by the sun, even the torches faltered and started to go out. Without the balance from the sun, new monsters like the Grue were able to claw their way into existence. The Grue made the darkness itself deadly, killing off those who stray too far from the light.
That's ultimately where you come in. This world can't fight for itself anymore. This world cannot restore the balance of light and dark on its own. It needs you. Build a kingdom of light.
Take this land back for the good of all that is, all that will be, and all that once was.
