Better Than Ocelots tears out the convenience of vanilla survival and replaces it with a slower, harsher, and far more rewarding game. Nothing about your early game is safe - hunger, mining, building, farming, trading, and even exploration have all been reworked from the ground up. If you've played Better Than Wolves, you already know the philosophy: every comfort has to be earned.

What's Changed?

Hardcore Survival - Tougher mobs, harsher environments, and unforgiving mechanics turn even a short walk outside your base into a genuine risk. Death has weight, and the world won't go easy on you for it.

Hunger & Food - Forget punching a tree and eating an apple ten minutes later. Food production is now a real system you have to build, not a hotbar slot you top off.

Crafting - Recipes have been gutted and rebuilt around dedicated machinery. Even basics like wooden undefinedplanks, bread, and bonemeal can no longer be made by hand - you'll need to build the infrastructure to produce them.

Mining & Building - Resource gathering and construction are tied into the same machine-driven economy, pushing you to actually build a base rather than just punch your way to progress.

Farming, Trading & Exploring - All reworked alongside everything else, so progression feels consistent from the moment you spawn to the moment you're fighting end-game threats.

Machine Age

Instead of leaning on vanilla crafting tables and furnaces for everything, Better Than Ocelots adds a layer of Create-mod-style machinery that takes over many vanilla recipes entirely. Sieves, mills, crucibles, saws, turntables, and more sit between you and the items you used to take for granted. It's not about flashy contraptions for their own sake - it's about making simple things hard again, the same way Better Than Wolves did over a decade ago.

This pack is actively in development - All of the original BTW features have been completed

The Road Ahead

Better Than Wolves hasn't been updated to reflect over a decade of Minecraft's evolution - so part of this project's mission is filling that gap. Going forward, expect new and reworked content built around features and mechanics introduced after Minecraft 1.5.2 (the era BTW stopped at), reimagined through a BTW-faithful lens. The goal isn't to bolt on modern Minecraft for its own sake - it's to ask "what would BTW have done with this?" and build it that way.
