Ashen skies adds a bit of everything to Minecraft:

 

 

Technology And Magic:

 

The Alchemic Ash mod adds a technology tree built around transmutation and furnace use, with heavy use of hoppers and furnaces to generate resources - whether a few using a single furnace, or a great many by building a whole complex of infinite furnaces at the end of a fair amount of work.  Alchemic Ash also includes craftable flight tools - Skystones and Eltrya - to make world exploration easy.

 

This combines smoothly with Hopper Ducts, the simplest possible pipe mod, allowing you to pipe furnace outputs and inputs around between blocks and arrange your magical smelting plants as you like.

 

Together, these mods lay a foundation for fairly easy and strong use of the standard brewing stand and enchanting table, including expanding use through Extra Alchemy.

 

The recipes for most of these added crafts can be found both on their respective pages, and in the recipe-giving Guide Book, which will appear in you hand when you spawn in world with this pack installed.

 

 

 

World, Crops, And Villagers:

 

Ruins has been overhauled for this modpack, with its standard templates replaced; in this pack, it generates surface ruins, veins of ash and crystal below ground, and the flying islands pictured above.  The flying islands, as one of the more eye-catching features, deserve the extra note that they spawn most heavily (though not exclusively) above oceans.  Some of these sky islands (there are 15 variations) contain treasure chests, as well as other potential goodies like ender chests and even enchanting tables.

 

Minecraft Comes Alive and the supporting Radix Core replace the standard villagers with their distinctive and improved variety, as well as giving you the opportunity to spawn a village by means of the crystal ball that spawns with you at world entry.

 

Harvestcraft has also been included to expand the available plant types, giving you another reason to go to ground while exploring.

 

Finally, Lemon's Simple Teleporters can be created pretty handily with materials generated using Alchemic Ash, which allows you to link together multiple bases in various far-flung areas, so that you can have homes on the ground, in the sky, and anywhere else you like!
