Example material: Diamond but it works with every vanilla pickaxe and a lot of pickaxes from mods (IC2, this mod, GC3, DE) But pickaxes are not the only tools that work. Axes and shovels works too! For swords you needs a axe and for hoes a pickaxe.
It looks like the nether but normaly its very dark! For this pic I used nightvision.
