Would You Rather By Buraca27 (WYRBB)

Every so often, you’re forced to choose between two permanent trade-offs. Stats change, controls shift, and visuals glitch. Both halves take effect immediately and neither wears off. How long can you survive the mess you build?

Description

Would You Rather (WYRBB)

Every so often—at an interval you set—the game pauses and drops a decision on your screen. Two choices. Each gives you a permanent benefit and exacts a permanent price. You pick one. Both take effect immediately. Neither wears off.

Twenty questions into a world, you aren't playing vanilla Minecraft anymore. You're playing whatever ecosystem you built by accident, one bad decision at a time.

The Catalogue

161 individual traits — 77 benefits, 84 costs — combine into 6,468 possible boon+cost pairings. Pit any two of those against each other and there are roughly 20.9 million raw ways to build a dilemma. A weight system and a strict fairness filter (no free lunches, no clear-cut choices, no obviously inferior side) throws out everything except the genuinely hard calls — leaving a dynamically-composed pool of over 700 unique dilemmas, generated fresh at startup rather than hand-written. Adding a single trait widens every question in the game at once.

A small taste of what's in the pool:

  • Guard Reflex (new) — Your shield raises itself to block an incoming melee hit before it lands, more reliably with every copy held.
  • Blood Price (new) — Every kill that's actually yours costs you a sliver of your own health, whatever the weapon.
  • Grounded (new) — Any jump you get while sprinting is cancelled outright. Stop moving to leave the ground.
  • Black Cloud (new) — A small storm of your own follows you everywhere: real rain overhead, ambient thunder, and occasional genuine lightning close by — visible to anyone nearby, and just as capable of setting things alight as a real storm.
  • Aflame — You permanently look like you're on fire, to yourself and everyone else looking at you. Purely visual — nothing actually burns.
  • Muddled Hands / Crooked Grip — Your held item shows the wrong texture, or sits in your hand at an impossible angle — for real, in front of anyone watching, not just you.
  • Liar's Eyes / Hollow Sight — Random blocks render as something else entirely, or vanish from sight while staying perfectly solid.
  • Locked Radio — One music disc, stuck on an unmutable loop that answers to no volume slider in the game — including Master.
  • Zoom / Inverted — Your own field of view or your own controls turned against you, permanently, escalating further with every extra copy.
  • Storm-Called / Ore Sense / Wall Crawler — Real lightning finds you now and then, veins give away their location, or any wall becomes a ladder.

…and well over a hundred more, covering movement, combat, mining, farming, mob behaviour, and the game's own UI.

Managing Debts & Trade

Every accepted deal is logged by the system—tracking the exact buff linked to its corresponding drawback.

Press K (default) to open the trait manager. The UI features search and filter functions to review current traits grouped by gain or cost. Hovering over a penalty displays its precise mechanical breakdown rather than just a title.

Clearing Debts

You can purge specific penalties in two ways:

  1. Break the Deal: Surrender both the positive benefit and its linked penalty simultaneously.
  2. Buyout: Pay an inflated cost to clear the penalty while retaining the benefit.

Cost scaling applies based on severity and usage frequency. The first buyout is cheap; repeated buyouts become exponentially expensive.

Resetting your own traits entirely — from the Settings screen or with /wouldyourather reset — needs no operator permission either. It's your own bargain to undo.

Player Trading

Deals can be offered to other players. The recipient must manually accept the transfer screen, passing both the benefit and the penalty to their profile.

Getting Started

New players are handed an in-game guide book automatically on first join — how to turn the mod on, every keybind, how dilemmas work, and every command, split between what anyone can run and what needs an operator. Lost your copy? /wouldyourather guide hands you another, no permission required.

Multiplayer & Networking

  • Client Dependency: The UI renders natively on the client. Every player must have the mod installed to see questions. There is no server-only fallback.
  • Player Isolation: Each player receives unique questions and maintains independent trait rosters.
  • Shared Appearance: A handful of traits (Aflame, Muddled Hands, Crooked Grip) change how you look to other players, not just yourself — the server keeps everyone's client honestly in sync on exactly who has what, rather than leaving it to guesswork.
  • Server Security: All trait operations, UI requests, and admin actions perform strict server-side validation to prevent client packet manipulation.

Administration & Configuration

The mod is disabled by default upon world creation and must be explicitly toggled on per save file, either from the Settings screen or with an operator command.

Server operators have access to an administrative control panel to:

  • Adjust global prompt timers and selection timeouts.
  • Force-trigger choice prompts across the server on demand.
  • Inspect exact, verified player trait inventories in real time.
  • Directly grant, revoke, or wipe player traits individually or globally.

Requirements

  • Loader: Fabric (Forge will be available soon)
  • Minecraft Version: 1.21.1 or 26.2
  • Dependencies: Fabric API (Fabric builds only)
  • Supported Languages: English, European Portuguese (pt_PT), Brazilian Portuguese (pt_BR)
