Well That's Grading

Attune your gear with streak-earned cores to roll a Grade (I-V), an Archetype, and one of ~380 unique buffs that change how you play; die and your streak resets.

Well That's Grading turns crafted gear into RPG loot. It's a loot progression mod for NeoForge 1.21.1 where nearly everything you equip can roll a power grade, a class-flavored archetype, and one buff out of hundreds: swords, axes, bows, crossbows, every tool and armor piece, shields, tridents, even elytra and fishing rods. How good the rolls get depends on one thing: how long you stay alive.

Three axes, one anvil

Combine gear with an Attunement Core at an anvil, pay the XP cost, and the item comes out attuned with:

  • a Grade (I–V) that scales the item's primary stat,
  • an Archetype that decides which buff pool it rolls from,
  • a Buff with a rolled flavor name and its own stat line.

Hover the item for the short version. Hold Shift for the lore.

380 unique buffs, zero filler

38 archetypes ship with roughly 380 functionally unique buffs and about 1,950 named variants. A hard design rule bans stat-clone filler: no two buffs are "+X% damage" with different numbers, and every buff changes a decision you make in play. Bloodletter, Cryomancer, Necromancer, Stormcaller, Assassin, Druid, Skyrunner, Venomblade, Deepkeeper, Groundkeeper, and 28 more, each built around its own self-reinforcing gameplay loop.

The Streak

Your streak gates the whole ladder, and it only rewards playing the game:

  • passive points for every minute you survive,
  • your first visit to each biome,
  • each advancement the first time you earn it,
  • each boss species the first time you kill it.

A higher streak unlocks higher core tiers from chests and bosses. Dying resets it to zero. There is no bed-farming your way to Grade V.

Attunement Cores

Cores drop from chest loot and bosses, never from mining or grinding common mobs. The tier that drops scales with your streak and the dimension you're looting in.

Tier Rolls grades Anvil cost
Dim I–II 3 levels
Gleaming II–III 6 levels
Radiant III–IV 10 levels
Blazing IV–V 15 levels
Primordial V, guaranteed 25 levels

Collections

An in-game Collections screen tracks every archetype and buff you've discovered, complete with discovery ceremonies, a streak HUD, and glossary keywords highlighted right in item tooltips.

Built for modpacks

Zero required dependencies; every hook below activates on its own when the partner mod is present.

  • L_Ender's Cataclysm, Twilight Forest, Mowzie's Mobs — their bosses drop cores at pre-tuned minimum tiers, alongside the Ender Dragon and Wither.
  • The Aether, Twilight Forest — dimension-specific core tuning out of the box.

The entire content layer is datapack JSON: archetypes, buffs, name pools, boss floors, dimension biases. Pack makers can add, rebalance, or reskin without touching Java.

FAQ

Does my streak really wipe on death? Yes. The reset is the design. Op-only commands exist if your server wants softer rules.

Can I add my own content? New archetypes, buff variants, and name pools are plain JSON in a datapack. Brand-new mechanic shapes need a small Java hook.

Multiplayer? Yes, progress and discoveries sync to servers.
