Description

Weeping Woods

The forest is taking root.

Deep within Minecraft's swamps, something strange is growing.

Weeping Woods is a world-generation and environmental expansion introducing a new species of procedurally generated trees, towering ancient forests, contaminated terrain, mysterious witch huts, unique aquatic vegetation, and atmospheric particle effects.

Born from the idea of reimagining Minecraft's witch huts, Weeping Woods transforms familiar swamp landscapes into something beautiful, mysterious, and perhaps a little unnatural.

The trees themselves are natural. Their concentration, however, might suggest otherwise.

🌳 Procedurally Generated Weeping Wood Trees

At the heart of Weeping Woods is a custom procedural tree-generation system featuring four distinct growth sizes:

  • Small: Compact, twisted trees with distinctive bonsai-inspired growth.

  • Medium: Larger specimens with extended branches and fuller canopies.

  • Large: Imposing trees with substantial branching structures and expansive foliage.

  • Ancient: Towering giants with enormous roots, sprawling branches, and layered canopies that dominate the surrounding landscape.

Unlike trees selected exclusively from predefined structure templates, Weeping Wood trees are generated algorithmically.

Each generation introduces variations in branching, proportions, canopy placement, and overall structure.

The result is genuinely different tree forms belonging to the same recognizable species.

Individual trees retain their characteristic Weeping Wood appearance while developing their own distinctive silhouettes.

Some ancient specimens become natural landmarks, towering over the surrounding landscape and providing opportunities for ambitious treehouse construction.

🌲 Natural World Generation

Weeping Wood trees occur naturally throughout ordinary Minecraft swamps.

Scattered specimens can be encountered among vanilla vegetation, allowing players to discover and harvest Weeping Wood without needing to locate a special forest.

However, something unusual happens around certain witch huts.

The 25% Witch Hut Transformation

Approximately 25% of eligible witch hut generation attempts produce a dense Weeping Woods forest surrounding a custom witch hut.

These transformed locations feature:

  • Dense concentrations of procedurally generated Weeping Wood trees.

  • Increasing forest density toward the witch hut.

  • Gradual, irregular forest transitions extending outward from the central structure.

  • Towering large and ancient specimens.

  • Altered terrain, water coloration, and vegetation.

  • Thick, overlapping canopies that create an enclosed forest environment.

  • A custom-designed witch hut hidden within the surrounding forest.

The surrounding forest transitions gradually into ordinary swamp terrain rather than ending at a perfectly defined boundary.

Normal witch huts remain part of the world, and Weeping Wood trees continue to occur outside these concentrated forests.

The trees themselves are natural. Their concentration is not.

🧙 Reimagined Witch Huts

Deep within certain Weeping Woods forests, players may discover an entirely redesigned witch hut.

Replacing the traditional vanilla swamp hut at transformed locations, this custom structure features distinctive architecture designed specifically for the Weeping Woods environment.

Features include:

  • A unique, asymmetrical cottage design.

  • Steep, layered purple roofs and unusual architectural details.

  • Weeping Wood building materials and overgrown vegetation.

  • Atmospheric lighting and decorative elements.

  • A hidden loot chest containing rare rewards and brewing supplies.

  • A witch and black cat associated with the structure.

The custom witch hut preserves the familiar identity of Minecraft's swamp witches while giving them a home that feels more appropriate for their mysterious surroundings.

Explore carefully. Some secrets are easier to find than others.

🍃 A Contaminated Swamp Ecosystem

Weeping Woods introduces a distinctive environmental palette inspired by poisonous vegetation, overgrown wetlands, and unusual natural phenomena.

Tainted Terrain

The ground takes on muted, desaturated purple tones, as though the surrounding soil has slowly absorbed something poisonous.

New terrain features include:

  • Tainted Grass

  • Tainted Soil

  • Slime Moss

  • Slime Moss growth extending over exposed surfaces and cliff edges

The green moss contrasts with the contaminated purple landscape, creating an environment that feels damp, overgrown, and distinctly different from ordinary Minecraft swamps.

Aquatic Vegetation

The waterways are populated by unique lily pad variants:

  • Poison Lily Pads: Irregular green aquatic leaves.

  • Crimson Lily Pads: Malformed green pads featuring distinctive crimson flowers.

  • Weeping Lily Stalks: Submerged plant stems extending below naturally generated lily pads toward the waterbed.

Both lily pad varieties can be collected and placed by players.

The flowers, aquatic vegetation, and altered water coloration help create a cohesive ecosystem that remains recognizable as a Minecraft swamp.

Hanging Vegetation

Weeping Wood canopies feature distinctive hanging moss, creating slender strands beneath their branches.

These complement the trees' unusual geometry and add depth to the forest environment.

✨ Atmospheric Particle Effects

The Weeping Woods ecosystem features custom ambient particles associated with its unusual trees.

Around the bases of Weeping Wood trees, softly pulsing purple lights appear among the roots and surrounding vegetation.

Each glowing particle features a subtle crimson center, surrounded by a purple glow and soft, purplish-gray haze.

These effects are designed to create a mysterious atmosphere without fundamentally changing Minecraft's visual style.

Features include:

  • Tree-dependent particle generation.

  • Softly pulsing purple lights with crimson centers.

  • Wisps of translucent purple-gray haze.

  • Particles distributed around tree bases and surrounding ground.

  • Atmospheric effects that become more noticeable within densely forested areas.

The particles add visual depth and reinforce the mysterious nature of the Weeping Woods environment.

Something is alive within the forest. Whether it belongs there is another question.

🌱 Growing Your Own Weeping Woods

Weeping Wood trees can also be cultivated using saplings.

The tree size is determined by the planting arrangement:

Sapling Arrangement Result
1 sapling Small Weeping Wood
2 adjacent saplings Medium Weeping Wood
2×2 square Large Weeping Wood
3×3 square Ancient Weeping Wood

Saplings support natural growth and bone meal.

This allows players to cultivate Weeping Woods outside their naturally generated environments and incorporate these unusual trees into survival bases, gardens, and large construction projects.

🏡 Built for Exploration and Survival

Weeping Woods is intended to enhance the existing Minecraft experience rather than replace it.

Players can:

  • Discover scattered Weeping Wood trees while exploring ordinary swamps.

  • Search for rare, densely forested witch hut locations.

  • Explore custom witch huts and discover hidden loot.

  • Harvest the new wood species for crafting and construction.

  • Grow different tree sizes using sapling arrangements.

  • Collect and place decorative aquatic plants.

  • Build settlements and treehouses within enormous ancient trees.

The mod emphasizes environmental variety, exploration, and building freedom.

Whether you want to establish a home beneath an ancient tree, explore a mysterious witch's cottage, or simply discover something unexpected during exploration, Weeping Woods is designed to offer something worthwhile.

🌫️ Optional Shaders — Recommended for Atmosphere

Shaders are not required to play Weeping Woods.

The mod's trees, terrain, vegetation, and atmospheric particles are designed to function with Minecraft's standard rendering.

However, shaders can significantly enhance the visual experience through improved lighting, volumetric fog, bloom, dynamic shadows, and water reflections.

Recommended Shader: Photon

Photon Shaders are particularly well suited to the dark, atmospheric environment of Weeping Woods.

With Photon enabled, players can experience:

  • Enhanced fog and atmospheric depth beneath dense tree canopies.

  • Softer lighting and shadows throughout the forest.

  • Bloom effects that complement compatible glowing particles.

  • Reflective swamp water and enhanced environmental lighting.

  • Dramatic lighting around ancient trees and witch huts.

Other shader packs may also produce excellent results depending on personal preference and hardware capabilities.

Shader installation is entirely optional. Weeping Woods does not require Photon, Iris, or Sodium to function.

Gallery screenshots were captured using Photon Shaders to demonstrate the environment with enhanced lighting and atmospheric effects.

Shader performance will vary depending on the player's system and selected settings.

🔮 Future Development — The Witch Swamp Project

Weeping Woods began as an idea for improving Minecraft's witch huts.

That idea gradually developed into a much larger vision: a mysterious swamp ecosystem with unusual vegetation, distinctive wildlife, supernatural inhabitants, and redesigned structures.

Rather than implementing everything at once, the project is being developed incrementally.

Weeping Woods is intended to remain a standalone environmental mod.

Future updates may introduce:

  • Additional custom flora and vegetation.

  • Unique wildlife, including dart frogs associated with Weeping Wood trees.

  • Expanded atmospheric effects.

  • Further environmental refinements and world-generation improvements.

  • Additional ecological interactions.

A separate, optional expansion currently envisioned as Witch Swamp may eventually introduce:

  • More aggressive, magically enhanced witches.

  • Custom hostile creatures.

  • Witch golems.

  • Poisonous slimes.

  • Additional supernatural structures and encounters.

  • Expanded magical gameplay mechanics.

The goal is to allow players to enjoy the Weeping Woods environment independently, while those interested in a more dangerous experience can eventually expand upon it.

These are future concepts and are not included in the current environmental release.

Development priorities and release plans may change as the project progresses.

⚠️ Early Development and Compatibility

Weeping Woods remains in active development.

While the core features have undergone development and playtesting, additional bugs, compatibility issues, and unusual world-generation behavior may still occur.

Known Issues

  • Breaking a Weeping Door may produce two door items instead of one.

Compatibility

  • Minecraft: Java Edition 26.3

  • Mod Loader: NeoForge

  • Recommended: Generate a new world, or explore previously unexplored chunks in an existing world.

New terrain and structures are generated during world creation and exploration. Existing chunks are not automatically regenerated.

Shaders are optional and are not included with the mod.

Feedback is welcome, particularly concerning world generation, survival gameplay, crafting behavior, performance, and compatibility.
