[0.7.3] - 2026-08-11 — the Respawn button that did nothing

Reported from play: with two or more players on a team, someone would die and then be unable to come back. The Respawn button did nothing at all; only reconnecting freed them.

When a PvP round ended, every player in the location was healed to full so the next round would start them fresh. That loop included players who had died and were still looking at the death screen — and healing them is a trap, because vanilla refuses the respawn request outright when the server-side player already has health:

// ServerGamePacketListenerImpl.handleClientCommand, PERFORM_RESPAWN
if (this.player.getHealth() > 0.0F) return;

So the click was discarded before the mod ever saw it. Nothing in the log, nothing on screen — just a button that stopped working.

Why it needed a teammate. With one player per team, that player's death ends the round on the spot; there is no gap to be caught in. With someone still fighting, a player can sit on the death screen while the round plays out and ends underneath them. That is exactly the window the report describes.

The end-of-round loop now skips anyone still dead. Nothing is lost by doing so: the phase is already the next buy phase, so when they do click Respawn the normal handler brings them back at their team spawn with full health.

The end of a match had the same shape with a different cost: backup.restore() put a player's own belongings into the inventory of a corpse, and vanilla wipes that inventory a moment later on respawn. Their gear is now handed to the deferred-restore queue PvE deaths already use, and comes back when they do.

Fixed

  • PvP: a player who died while a teammate fought on could not respawn after the round ended
  • PvP: dying in the final round lost the belongings the match end tried to give back

Added

  • DeadPlayerHealTest — nothing in the round manager may heal or re-equip a player without first asking whether they are still on the death screen

Notes

  • No protocol change (still version 14); test suite 130
