VO: Speedometer

adding a dedicated F3 debug entry that shows your speed in blocks per second — the same unit your brain actually understands. It works fully independently, uses vanilla's own tick-based physics data, and even consolidates with player_speed

⚡ Speedometer

“Player speed, but in real-world blocks per second.”

1 Jar 1 Version Policy: I build 1 dedicated JAR for each Minecraft version (e.g. MC 26.2, MC 26.3). Please download the exact build that matches your Minecraft installation.

Dependency Requirement: Speedometer is 100% self-contained and client-side. It requires Fabric Loader only — no Fabric API, no Cloth Config, and no external libraries required.

Every Minecraft player knows the frustration: you press F3, look for your movement speed, and vanilla gives you Speed: 0.215 blocks/tick. A raw engine tick delta that is impossible to contextualize mid-flight or on horseback. Are you sprinting at peak efficiency? How fast does a firework rocket actually propel your Elytra? How fast is that bred horse compared to a minecart?

Speedometer fixes this foundation. It adds a native F3 debug screen entry that translates your movement into real-world readable blocks per second (b/s) (equivalent to meters per second, m/s). Powered directly by vanilla's 20 TPS physics engine (Entity.getKnownSpeed()), it updates dynamically, breaks down 3D velocity into horizontal vs vertical vectors, tracks vehicles and ridden mounts, and seamlessly consolidates with vanilla's player_speed debug entry on Minecraft 26.3+.

Part of the Vanilla Outsider Collection — mods that refine vanilla mechanics with modern engineering standards.

✨ Features

⚡ First-Class F3 Debug Screen Integration

Speedometer registers its own dedicated speedometer option inside Minecraft's native DebugScreenEntries system (F3 + F6). It operates completely on its own — requiring zero external overlay rendering or hacky screen hooks.

↔️ Complete 3D Vector Decomposition

Get instant mathematical insight into your movement dynamics:

  • Total Velocity: Complete 3D velocity vector magnitude (length() * 20.0).
  • Horizontal Speed (H): Planar ground, sprinting, ice boating, and lateral flight velocity (sqrt(vx^2 + vz^2) * 20.0).
  • Vertical Speed (V): Jumping height velocity, falling rate, and Elytra pitch changes (abs(vy) * 20.0).

🛠️ Smart Layout Modes & Consolidation (F3 + F6)

Choose your preferred display layout directly in the in-game F3 Debug Options Screen (F3 + F6):

  1. Speedometer Only (Default — all versions):
    Speed: 58.79 b/s (H: 58.62, V: 4.47)
  2. Both Enabled (Smart Consolidation) (MC 26.3+):
    Speed: 2.049 blocks/tick, 40.97 b/s (H: 37.46, V: 16.60)
  3. Vanilla Player Speed Only (MC 26.3+):
    Speed: 0.215 blocks/tick

Speedometer Only Standalone
Speedometer standalone mode showing clean blocks/second velocity metrics

Both Speedometer and Player Speed Enabled
Smart consolidation on Minecraft 26.3+ merging blocks/tick and blocks/second into a single line

📌 ALWAYS_ON HUD Pinning

Want to track your flight or sprint speed without cluttering your view with the entire F3 debug wall?

  • Open the debug options screen via F3 + F6.
  • Toggle the speedometer entry to Always.
  • Speedometer will now remain pinned to the top of your screen as a lightweight, unobtrusive speed readout during normal gameplay!

🐎 Vehicle & Mount Tracking

Speedometer automatically detects when you are riding a Horse, Donkey, Mule, Camel, Boat, Minecart, Pig, or Strider, calculating and displaying the ridden vehicle's true momentum and speed rather than player entity coordinates.

📐 Jitter-Free Dynamic Formatting

Uses dynamic string formatting (%.2f) that expands and contracts smoothly without rigid character padding. Samples vanilla's pre-calculated Entity.getKnownSpeed() vector once per tick for rock-solid 60 FPS performance and zero GC heap allocation.

🪶 100% Zero Dependencies & Client-Side Architecture

  • No Fabric API Required: Built purely on Fabric Loader and vanilla Minecraft classes.
  • Client-Side Only: Runs completely locally. Connect to vanilla, Spigot, Paper, Forge, or Fabric multiplayer servers without needing any server-side installation.

🚀 In-Game Controls & Quick Start

Operate and customize Speedometer using Minecraft's native F3 debug keyboard shortcuts:

Key Combination Action Description
F3 Toggle Debug Screen Shows or hides the complete F3 debug HUD including Speedometer.
F3 + F6 Open Debug Options Opens the interactive Debug Screen Entries menu to toggle or pin Speedometer.
F3 + Q Show F3 Help Displays Minecraft's in-game help list for all active F3 key combinations.

⚙️ Configuration & HUD Pinning

Speedometer uses Minecraft's official Debug Screen Entries architecture (DebugScreenEntries):

  1. Press F3 + F6 in-game to open the native debug configuration screen.
  2. Scroll to locate speedometer.
  3. Cycle through the three native display states:
    • Default: Visible only when the full F3 screen is active.
    • Always: Permanently pinned to your HUD even when the F3 screen is closed.
    • Never: Completely hidden.
  4. On Minecraft 26.3+, you can independently configure player_speed and speedometer; enabling both will automatically merge them into a unified single-line readout!

📖 In-Depth How-To & Operational Playbook

1. Drop-In Installation & Client Verification

  1. Download speedometer-*.jar for your Minecraft version.
  2. Place the JAR file directly into your .minecraft/mods folder.
  3. Launch Minecraft. No companion libraries or configuration files are required.

2. Pinning a Minimal Speedometer to Your HUD

  1. Press F3 + F6 to enter the Debug Entries screen.
  2. Click on the speedometer entry to cycle its mode from Default to Always.
  3. Press Done (or Escape).
  4. Close the F3 menu by pressing F3.
  5. A clean, compact speed readout (Speed: 4.30 b/s (H: 4.30, V: 0.00)) will remain visible in the top-left of your screen, giving you real-time speed data during survival gameplay!

3. Elytra Flight Speed & Rocket Benchmarking

  • When launching with an Elytra, fire a firework rocket while watching your Total Speed and Vertical (V) speed.
  • Note how vertical pitch affects speed: diving down converts gravitational potential energy into extreme Horizontal (H) speed exceeding 60-80 b/s.
  • Level off when your vertical speed hits near V: 0.00 to maximize horizontal travel distance per rocket!

4. Horse & Mount Breeding Optimization

  • When breeding horses, mount each candidate and sprint across a flat surface.
  • Check the H (Horizontal) speed readout:
    • Average wild horses run between 9.0 to 11.5 b/s.
    • A maximum-stat bred horse reaches 14.23 b/s (faster than minecarts!).
  • Speedometer gives you instant, exact verification of your horse breeding lineage without needing redstone timer tracks.

5. Blue Ice Highway & Boat Velocity Testing

  • On blue ice boat tracks, acceleration builds rapidly.
  • Monitor your horizontal speed as you reach terminal boat velocity (72.73 b/s), allowing you to benchmark transport network efficiency across server hubs.
