Villager Whisperer

A complete villager trading overhaul that shows you which deals are worth it, lets you reroll bad trades, block unwanted jobs, and fixes nitwits.

villagewhisperer

A complete villager trading overhaul that shows you which deals are worth it, lets you reroll bad trades, and fixes nitwits - for Singleplayer only.

What is this?

Villager Whisperer replaces the entire villager trading screen with a redesigned interface built from scratch. Instead of squinting at a plain trade list and guessing whether that emerald deal is actually good, you get color-coded ratings, a clear cost-to-reward breakdown, and direct control over the RNG — reroll bad trades, lock a villager's profession to force a job change, and even cure nitwits.

If you rely heavily on villager trading (enchanted books, emerald farms, gear upgrades) and you're tired of the "kill the villager and rebuild the job block" ritual just to get a better deal, this mod is for you.

⚠️ Singleplayer only. This mod is hard-locked to singleplayer worlds and does nothing on dedicated servers or in real multiplayer sessions. See Compatibility below.

Features

🖥️ Redesigned Trade Screen

A fully custom-built replacement for the vanilla trading window — keeps the real payment/output/inventory slots (so drag & drop and shift-click still work exactly like vanilla), but wraps them in a clearer, wider layout:

  • Villager name and trade level ("Level X/5") shown at a glance.
  • A dedicated, wider trade list column so item names are never cut off and more trades fit on screen at once without scrolling.
  • Trade list with cost → arrow → result icons, stock count, and a color-coded rating dot per trade.
  • Sold-out trades are shown struck through, so it's immediately clear which offers are temporarily unavailable.
  • A detail card that highlights cost slots in red and the result slot in green when you select a trade, with a warning if you're missing ingredients.
  • Fully localized UI — available in 12 languages (English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Polish, Russian, Brazilian Portuguese, Japanese, Chinese, Korean), with automatic fallback to English for anything missing.

🎯 Trade Quality Indicators

Every trade is automatically rated so you know what's worth your emeralds before you click:

  • 🟢 Good — top-tier enchantments (Mending, Silk Touch, Multishot, high-level Unbreaking/Protection/Efficiency/Sharpness/Power, good Fishing enchants) and most raw material trades.
  • 🔴 Bad — items you can easily make yourself (compass, clock, beds, iron armor, boats, bows, item frames…) and useless enchantments (Bane of Arthropods, Knockback I, Unbreaking I).
  • 🟡 Depends — enchantments that are situational — worth checking yourself.
  • Neutral — decorative or easily replaceable items (bookshelves, glass, redstone, bread…).

🔁 Instant Trade Reroll

Not happy with a villager's current trades? Hit R or the Reroll button to shuffle all of their trades at once — as long as you haven't traded with them yet.

🔒 Profession Ban

Force a villager to find a new job. Banning their current profession removes it for 60 seconds — they can't reclaim that same job during the lock, but they're free to pick up any other one. Also only available before your first trade with that villager.

📦 Quick Restock

As soon as any one of a villager's trades runs out of stock, a special restock trade appears automatically (1 Emerald). Buying it refreshes the uses on all of that villager's trades — no more waiting around or re-triggering restocks manually.

🏷️ Librarian Enchant Tag

Once you've traded with a librarian, they automatically get a nametag showing their enchanted book offer and price (e.g. "Infinity - 8") — so you can spot a good librarian across the village without opening their trade screen.

🥕 Nitwit Cure

Feed a nitwit villager a golden carrot to turn them into a regular, job-less villager — one that can then pick up a real profession like any other villager.

How it works

There's no progression, no tech tree, no book to unlock - everything is active the moment you install the mod. Just click on any villager in a singleplayer world and the new trade screen opens automatically. Reroll and Profession Lock are only available until you make your first trade with that specific villager; after that, they're locked in for good (until you find another villager, of course).

Compatibility

Mod Version Minecraft Version Loader Loader Version
1.0.0 1.20.1 Forge 47.1.3+
  • ⚠️ Singleplayer only — this is enforced in code, not just a recommendation. Installing this on a dedicated server or joining a multiplayer world will simply do nothing.
  • No Mixins, no ASM, no Access Transformers — all changes go through standard Forge events.
  • No known mod integrations or conflicts, but any mod that also replaces the villager trade screen (via ScreenEvent.Opening) may compete for the same hook.

Known Limitations

  • The trade list currently shows a fixed number of rows — villagers with a large number of offers may not display every trade.
  • Profession Lock is not persistent across a world/server restart — a lock that's active when you close the game will be gone when you reload.
  • Trade ratings are based on a fixed set of rules, not a live market analysis - they're meant as a quick heuristic, not a perfectly calibrated system.

Notes

This mod only changes how you interact with vanilla villager trading - it doesn't add any new items, blocks, mobs, or dimensions.
