Changelog: Velox v0.1.0 (1.21 – 1.21.6)
First release of Velox, built to take work off the server when lots of dropped items are lying around. Instead of working out where each item goes one by one, Velox does them all in one go, and they move just as they do in the normal game. Needs Celeris 0.3.1 or newer, a free helper mod: download it too.
Key Features & Changes
- Same as the Normal Game: Items fall, slide and land, get pushed by explosions, commands or other mods, and react when blocks around them are placed or broken. Picking up, stacking and despawning are unchanged, so farms, hoppers and contraptions keep working.
- Tested on Every Version: On each supported Minecraft version, items were dropped and knocked around on ice, slime, honey, soul sand, slabs, fences and cobwebs, with floors pulled away and walls built in their path, once with Velox and once without. Every item ended up in exactly the same spot at every moment.
- Only on the Server: Put Velox and Celeris on the server, or in your own mods folder for singleplayer. Players join with a normal game and don't need either mod.
- Works With Other Mods' Items: Items from other mods are handled like any others. Only when a mod gives its dropped items their own special movement does Velox leave them to that mod.
- Native Speed Without Flags: Celeris 0.3.1 loads its native physics kernel over JNI, so on NeoForge it works without any launch option (and without
--enable-native-access). If the native kernel cannot load, Velox falls back to Celeris's plain-Java kernel with identical results. - Nothing to Set Up: Just add it. To turn it off without removing it, set
enabled = falseinconfig/velox-common.tomland restart. - No Extra Chunk Loading: Velox only uses parts of the world that are already loaded.
- Minecraft 1.21 – 1.21.11 and 26.1 – 26.3, on NeoForge. Pick the Velox file for your Minecraft version: the release notes list which file covers which versions.
Performance
- Velox helps with items falling through the air or lying on and sliding across full blocks such as stone, dirt, grass or ice. While an item is in water or lava, on a hopper, slab, stair or carpet, on slime, honey or soul sand, against a fence or in a cobweb, or next to a boat or minecart, it is left to the normal game for that moment.
- By default it handles up to 32,768 items each in the Overworld, the Nether and the End, within an area about 750 blocks across that follows where most of the items are. Items beyond that move the normal way. Server owners can change the limit in
config/velox-common.toml. - On a test server, 50,000 items lying on the ground take about 70 ms per tick with Velox and 490 ms without; 500,000 take 1.1 s against 12 s. Gains run from about 3× when the items are far apart to about 19× when piled up, and it keeps roughly 25,000 to 35,000 items inside a 50 ms tick against about 5,000 to 9,000 in the normal game. Items falling from a height need the terrain loaded ahead of them, so Velox copies up to 256 chunk sections per tick by default (
sectionFillsPerTick).
