More Potions
Potions that should exist in vanilla Minecraft.
More Potions is a lightweight vanilla+ brewing mod that adds survival-friendly potions for 11 status effects already present in Minecraft but normally missing a standard Brewing Stand recipe.
Every potion uses an existing vanilla effect, a thematic vanilla ingredient, and the real Brewing Stand. There are no custom status effects, blocks, GUIs, mana systems, or parallel crafting stations. The result feels like a natural extension of Minecraft's potion system.
What does the mod add?
- Brewable potions for Haste, Mining Fatigue, Hunger, Levitation, Blindness, Glowing, Luck, Resistance, Absorption, Dolphin's Grace, and Wither
- Normal and extended variants for all 11 potion families
- Balanced level II variants for effects where a strong potion remains useful and reasonable
- Full vanilla support for splash potions, lingering potions, and tipped arrows
- Rare normal-potion additions to themed village and structure chest loot
- Native potion and creative-inventory integration
- English (
en_us) and Brazilian Portuguese (pt_br) localization - Dedicated-server support
- No required JEI or REI dependency; both recipe viewers remain optional
More Potions does not add custom effects, blocks, menus, mana, or a separate brewing system.
How to brew the potions
1. Prepare Awkward Potions
- Fuel a vanilla Brewing Stand with Blaze Powder.
- Put up to three Water Bottles in the bottom slots.
- Put Nether Wart in the ingredient slot to create Awkward Potions.
2. Brew a normal More Potions recipe
Keep the Awkward Potions in the bottom slots and add the thematic ingredient from the recipe table to the top slot. The ingredient is consumed normally, including unstackable or valuable ingredients such as the Golden Pickaxe and Golden Apple, so filling all three bottle slots is the most efficient option.
3. Choose extended or strong
- Brew a normal potion + Redstone Dust to make its extended version. Extended potions remain level I.
- Brew a normal potion + Glowstone Dust to make its strong version where the table lists one. Strong potions are level II.
- Extended and strong are separate branches: there is no extended level II combination.
- Levitation, Blindness, Glowing, and Dolphin's Grace intentionally have no strong recipe.
Glowing uses Glowstone Dust as its base thematic ingredient. Adding another Glowstone Dust does not create a strong Glowing potion.
Potion recipes
All listed durations are the base potion durations. Splash impact strength, lingering clouds, and tipped-arrow duration follow Minecraft's normal vanilla rules.
| Potion | Effect | Ingredient | Normal | Long | Strong |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Haste | Haste | Golden Pickaxe | 3:00 (I) | 8:00 (I) | 1:30 (II) |
| Mining Fatigue | Mining Fatigue | Prismarine Shard | 1:30 (I) | 4:00 (I) | 0:45 (II) |
| Hunger | Hunger | Rotten Flesh | 1:30 (I) | 4:00 (I) | 0:45 (II) |
| Levitation | Levitation | Shulker Shell | 0:10 (I) | 0:20 (I) | — |
| Blindness | Blindness | Ink Sac | 0:30 (I) | 1:00 (I) | — |
| Glowing | Glowing | Glowstone Dust | 3:00 (I) | 8:00 (I) | — |
| Luck | Luck | Emerald | 5:00 (I) | 10:00 (I) | 2:30 (II) |
| Resistance | Resistance | Iron Block | 1:30 (I) | 4:00 (I) | 0:45 (II) |
| Absorption | Absorption | Golden Apple | 2:00 (I) | 5:00 (I) | 1:00 (II) |
| Dolphin's Grace | Dolphin's Grace | Nautilus Shell | 3:00 (I) | 8:00 (I) | — |
| Withering | Wither | Wither Rose | 0:20 (I) | 0:40 (I) | 0:10 (II) |
The normal Luck recipe reuses Minecraft's existing minecraft:luck potion instead of registering a duplicate effect or potion.
Splash, lingering, and tipped-arrow recipes
After brewing any supported normal, extended, or strong potion:
- In the Brewing Stand, brew the drinkable potion with Gunpowder to create its Splash Potion.
- Brew that Splash Potion with Dragon's Breath to create its Lingering Potion.
- In a Crafting Table, place one Lingering Potion in the center and eight regular Arrows around it to create eight Tipped Arrows.
These conversions use the vanilla potion pipeline and preserve the selected potion family and variant. Tipped-arrow duration is shorter than the listed base potion duration because it follows vanilla scaling.
Chest loot
Normal variants have a small, themed chance to appear in village and structure chests. More Potions adds to the existing loot instead of replacing the vanilla loot table.
Supported versions and loaders
| Minecraft | Forge | Fabric | NeoForge |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.16.5 | Yes | Yes | - |
| 1.20.1 | Yes | Yes | - |
| 1.21.1 | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| 26.2 | - | Yes | Yes |
Minecraft 1.21.4 is intentionally not supported.
Installation and dependencies
- Install the supported Forge, Fabric, or NeoForge loader for your exact Minecraft version.
- Download the More Potions file matching both that version and loader.
- Fabric users must also install the matching Fabric API.
- Put the required JARs in the instance's
modsfolder. - For multiplayer, install More Potions on both the client and dedicated server.
Do not use a Forge file on NeoForge, a NeoForge file on Forge, or a file built for another Minecraft version.
JEI and REI are optional. Neither is a required dependency, and the mod works with the vanilla recipe system when they are absent.
Design philosophy
More Potions is intentionally focused: it makes existing vanilla effects brewable without turning Minecraft into a different magic system. Powerful recipes use proportionally expensive ingredients, strong variants are omitted when level II would be meaningless or unreasonable, and every recipe stays inside the familiar vanilla Brewing Stand flow.
