Unified Works: Woodcutter

An automated machine for growing and harvesting trees using saplings and axes.

Unified Works: Woodcutter

Since I created this mod for personal use, I tried to make it as polished as possible; however, if you find any bugs, don't hesitate to let me know and I'll fix them. :)

I wanted the block to resemble the Crafter to give it that industrial touch.

Unified Works: Woodcutter adds a new automated tree-harvesting machine to Minecraft, designed to make renewable wood production easier while keeping its mechanics close to vanilla Minecraft.

The Woodcutter is a specialized machine that simulates the growth and harvesting of trees without requiring the player to manually plant and chop them. Instead of generating generic wood resources, the machine works according to the type of tree being processed, allowing each sapling or propagule to produce resources associated with that tree.

🌳 How It Works

The Woodcutter requires two main components to operate:

A compatible sapling or propagule
An axe

Place the appropriate sapling or propagule into the machine and provide an axe. The Woodcutter will consume the planting material and use the axe to simulate the harvesting process.

Once the cycle is completed, the resulting resources are automatically deposited into a container placed in front of the Woodcutter, allowing it to be integrated into larger storage and automation systems.

The woodcutter must be oriented towards a valid storage container (e.g., a chest, barrel, or any other block capable of storing items).

The machine supports different tree types and their corresponding natural variations, including trees that can grow into larger forms when enough saplings are available.

🌲 Tree-Based Production

The Woodcutter does not use a single universal loot table for every tree. Each supported tree has its own production profile based on the resources normally associated with that tree.

Depending on the tree being processed, the Woodcutter can produce resources such as:

Logs
Leaves
Saplings
Sticks
Apples
Propagules
Mangrove roots
Other naturally associated tree drops

Different trees also have different production characteristics. Some trees can produce larger quantities of logs, while others have special growth requirements or additional resources.

Large tree variants such as giant spruce and jungle trees can also be simulated when the required number of saplings is provided.

🪓 Axe Mechanics

The axe is an important part of the Woodcutter's operation. Its durability is consumed as the machine performs harvesting cycles.

Axe enchantments affect the machine's behavior:

Efficiency — increases harvesting speed.
Fortune — improves compatible saplings/resource drops.
Silk Touch — changes harvesting behavior so that compatible logs and leaves can be obtained directly.
Unbreaking — can reduce durability consumption.
Mending — can repair the axe during operation.

The Woodcutter does not use enchantments to create excessive amounts of wood. Instead, they improve the efficiency and characteristics of the harvesting process while keeping production reasonable.

Nether Star Upgrade

The Woodcutter also includes a dedicated Nether Star slot.

Adding a Nether Star provides an advanced upgrade to the machine, improving its operation and reducing the amount of time required between harvesting cycles.

The Nether Star also improves the machine's Mending behavior, making it especially useful for long-term automated production.

The Nether Star is not consumed while the machine operates.

📦 Automatic Storage

The Woodcutter is designed to work as part of an automated storage system.

Place a compatible container directly in front of the machine and its generated resources will be transferred automatically.

If the output container becomes full, the Woodcutter will pause its operation until space becomes available again.

This allows the machine to be connected to storage and other automation systems without requiring the player to manually collect every harvest.

🔧 Crafting

The Woodcutter is crafted using common Minecraft materials together with the components required to build the machine.

Crafting Recipe:

The recipe uses wooden planks and redstone, making the Woodcutter accessible without requiring rare materials during the early stages of a survival world.

Once crafted, the machine can be placed wherever renewable wood production is needed.

⚙️ Automation

The Woodcutter is designed specifically for renewable-resource automation.

A typical setup can be as simple as:

Saplings / Propagules → Woodcutter → Storage

Provide the machine with planting material and an axe, place a container in front of it, and the Woodcutter will handle the harvesting process automatically.

This makes it useful for:

Automated wood production
Large storage systems
Survival bases
Resource farms
Renewable-material production
Modded automation systems

🌳 Supported Trees

The Woodcutter supports multiple vanilla tree types, including:

Oak
Spruce
Birch
Jungle
Acacia
Dark Oak
Cherry
Mangrove

Each tree type has its own production behavior and resource profile rather than simply using the same output for every tree.
