What's new

Easy and Standard

  • A pack can now be played in two modes, Easy and Standard, chosen from a row at the bottom of the settings' Other tab or on the welcome screen the first time the game starts. Easy is the same pack with a few mods switched off; which ones is a list the pack decides.
  • The mods change on the next launch, and the menu says so. A loaded mod's jar cannot be renamed while the game runs, so the choice is written down and applied at the very start of the next launch, before Forge goes looking for mods: a switched-off mod is renamed to .jar.disabled, the same way launchers mark one. Once the change has played, a small window offers to quit so the launcher can start the game again — or to carry on and do it later. A switch that cannot be applied leaves the pack as it was and is tried again the next time.
  • The list is config/uky/easy-mode-mods.txt, one mod a line: the jar's file name in full (SpecialMobs-3.7.0.jar), or just the start of it (SpecialMobs) to keep working when the mod is updated. The file explains itself at the top. The first time it is written it lists whatever the pack already ships switched off, so a pack distributed in its Easy form describes itself.

From the loading screen to the menu

  • The two are one shot now. The loading screen ends by pulling everything on it into a white-hot point in the middle of the window; the title screen picks that ember up, matter spirals into it, it implodes, and the black hole is born out of the shock — the lens opening from nothing and overshooting before it settles, with a pressure wave and a knock to the camera. Click or press a key to skip it, as before.

The black hole

  • Now and then a comet does not make it past: it swings round the hole, winds down a tightening spiral, settles towards the plane of the disk, passes behind the shadow on the far side, and goes over the horizon. The disk flares as it lands.
  • Click in the empty sky near the hole to let go of a clump of gas. It is already orbiting, too slowly to stay up, and falls in the same way.
  • Knock the whole title into the hole and it lights up as a quasar: the disk charges, then two relativistic jets erupt along the poles. They are traced with the disk rather than painted over it, so they are bent by the hole like everything else — the lower one is seen through the lens under the disk — and the one leaning towards the camera is the brighter. The letters come back once it calms down.
  • Every settings tab looks at the hole from a place of its own, and switching tabs is a camera move between them.
  • Cheaper to draw. Only the part of the hole that is on screen is traced — on the title screen about a third of what was traced before — and the trace itself takes 43% fewer integration steps for the same picture.

Keyboard

  • Every menu can be used without a mouse. Tab and Shift+Tab go through the controls in reading order, the arrow keys go to the nearest control in that direction (staying on the same row or column first), Enter or Space presses it, and Left and Right move a slider. The control with the keyboard's focus is marked with corner brackets of its own, so it is never confused with an open tab. Typing in a text field, or binding a key on the controls screen, keeps every key for itself.

Chat

  • Completing a command whose answer runs to thousands of names — /achievement give lists every statistic in the pack — no longer freezes the game when Tab is pressed, or keeps it stuttering while the list is open.

Title screen

  • "Minecraft 1.7.10" sits on the bottom line, level with the mod's version in the other corner. The pack's own footer, when it has one, goes above it.
