To start, you can't hit anything that's as hard as wood or higher with bare hands or you'll be hurt. So now you have to punch grass blocks, path blocks or podzol to get pebbles, punch leaves to get sticks and then craft cobblestone from pebbles. Create stone tools normally, and you're ready to progress in the vanilla way.
