Traveler's Staves

A new tooltype that focuses on assisting with vertical movement and helping negate small instances of fall damage.

Traveler's Staves

Overview

Traveler's Staves is a lightweight mod that adds a new tooltype: Staves. These are not magical staves, but sturdy staves meant to help you leap. All staves have two main functions: a vertical jump and preventing minor fall damage. This does come with the downside of them resetting your horizontal velocity most of the time.

Because staves take more resources to craft than their other material counterparts, they typically have increased durability, though this can run out fast with frequent use.

Staves are also something you'll be looking at a lot while you travel, so starting at the metal staves, most staff types can have their handle wrapped with any vanilla wool color for a little bit of customizeablity. Netherite staves can also have their ridges lined like armor trims, which I will explain more in the Customization section.

Vertical Jumps

Right clicking while holding a staff will grant the player a vertical leap. The height of this leap depends on the staff's material, with the lowest being 3 blocks high. You must be on the ground in order to jump.

The exact jump heights can be found below:

  • 3 Blocks
    • All wooden staves
    • Andestite, Diorite, Granite, Stone
  • 4 Blocks
    • Smooth Stone
    • Copper, Gold
    • Amethyst, Lapis (Normal), Redstone
  • 4.5 Blocks
    • Iron
  • 5 Blocks
    • Diamond
  • 6 Blocks
    • Netherite
    • Lapis (Empowered)

Breaking Your Fall

Every staff has what is called a fall damage breakpoint., ranging from 2-6 naturally If you are holding a staff and take fall damage, if it is equal to or lower than a staff's fall damage breakpoint, the damage will be prevented. There are some tradeoffs to this though. Whenever you prevent fall damage this way, your staff will take damage equal to the amount you would have taken (plus 75% extra if it was due to dripstone) and you will gain 4 seconds of slowness.

The damage it checks for is initial damage, which means damage reduction from sources such as feather falling will not help you fall further. Feather falling does at least give you the bonus of reducing the slowness duration by 1 second for each level of the enchantment you have.

The exact breakpoint amounts can be found below:

  • 2 Damage
    • All wooden staves
    • All stone staves
    • Amethyst Staff
  • 3 Damage
    • Copper
    • Lapis (Normal), Redstone
  • 4 Damage
    • Iron
  • 5 Damage
    • Diamond
  • 6 Damage
    • Netherite
    • Lapis (Empowered)

Customization

Using the Staff Worktable, you can wrap a wool color around a staff's handle. This descision can be undone at any time by using the [Remove Current Decorations] option. Iron, Gold, Copper, Amethyst, Diamond, and Netherite staves can be wrapped. Netherite staffs can also be adorned, lining its ridges with another metal. All nomral armor trim materials can be used for this. The staff table fully explains itself in-game, so I won't show much here.

Special Staves

There are a few staves with special properties in this mod, click the spoiler below to see what they are:

Gold Staff

  • Rather than the normal horziontal velocity reset (x0 multiplier), the gold staff has a built in x2.5 multiplier to horizontal velocity.

Amethyst Staff

  • The Amethyst staff does not gain the normal knockback properties that other staves have, instead, it applies a bleeding effect to attacked targets. For vanilla mobs, this can only affect fleshy targets.
  • You will also bleed for a few seconds whenever using this staff for any purpose unless the handle is wrapped.

Lapis Staff

  • Holding this staff in the offhand will allow it to collect xp and store it, all the way until its meter is full.
  • If the user has their lapis staff charge full and uses it while its in the offhand, they will get a jump that is much higher than normal and have some durability restored.

Redstone Staff

  • Holding this staff in the offhand will allow it to build charge when standing on redstone power sources or other redstone objects that are powered, all the way until its meter is full.
  • If the user has their redstone staff charge full and uses it while its in the offhand, it will fire out a small projectile that, upon landing, will cause enemies in a small radius to become Overcharged for 6.5 seconds.
  • While overcharged, most mobs will not be able to target you, but will still be able to deal contact damage if you get too close. Attacking a target with overcharged will remove the effect and deal 3 damage to both you and the target.
  • Iron Golems will ignore the effects of Overcharged and instead get Strength and Speed for 5.5 seconds.

There are 6 enchantments in this mod, their information is in the spoiler below:

  • Vaulting increases the initial jump velocity of a staff by 8% per level, up to level 5.

  • Lightweight decreases a staff's cooldown by 10% per level, up to level 5.
  • Incompatible with Nimble.
  • Can be gotten through the enchantment table, villager trades, and random loot.

Nimble

  • Nimble increases a staff's horizontal velocity multiplier by 40% per level, up to level 5. (x0 multiplier normally, can be brought up to 2x multiplier at max level. Gold staves can be brought up to a x5 multiplier).
  • Incompatable with Lightweight.
  • Can be gotten through the enchantment table, villager trades, and random loot.

Concuss

  • Concuss makes a staff's attacks apply slowness. This has a base duration of 2.5 seconds, but increases to 5 seconds with Concuss 2.
  • Cannot be applied to Amethyst Staves
  • Can be gotten through villager trades and random loot.
