TANF allows supported Tough As Nails bottles and canteens to interact naturally with compatible tanks, machines, buckets and other Forge fluid systems.
Tough As Nails Create Addon (tanca) is optional. When it is installed, TANF reuses its fluids rather than registering duplicates.
Features
- Adds standard Forge fluid capability support to Tough As Nails canteens and bottles
- Supports Water, Dirty Water and Purified Water in canteens
- Supports Water, Dirty Water, Purified Water and Tough As Nails juices in bottles
- Allows supported containers to fill from and empty into compatible Forge fluid tanks and machines
- Supports direct pickup and placement of Dirty Water and Purified Water source blocks with canteens
- Adds cauldron storage for Dirty Water, Purified Water and Juices while preserving vanilla Water cauldrons
- Purifies Dirty Water cauldrons after sustained heating above a lit Campfire or Soul Campfire
- Provides real fluid blocks and buckets when Tough As Nails Create Addon is not installed
- Automatically reuses Tough As Nails Create Addon fluids when it is installed
- Preserves Tough As Nails' existing hydration, drinking and water-selection behaviour
- Requires no Create-specific Java integration
Canteens
All Tough As Nails canteen tiers expose standard Forge item fluid capability.
Canteens support:
- Water
- Dirty Water
- Purified Water
Juices are intentionally not supported in canteens because Tough As Nails does not provide corresponding juice-canteen item states.
Canteen storage remains tied to Tough As Nails' existing item durability system. TANF does not replace or duplicate Tough As Nails' existing use-count behaviour.
One Tough As Nails fluid unit is represented as 250 mB.
For example, with the Tough As Nails 9.2.0.171 Forge release, the available canteen capacities are:
| Tier | Uses | Capacity |
|---|---|---|
| Leather | 5 | 1,250 mB |
| Copper | 6 | 1,500 mB |
| Iron | 7 | 1,750 mB |
| Gold | 10 | 2,500 mB |
| Diamond | 15 | 3,750 mB |
| Netherite | 25 | 6,250 mB |
Capacity is derived from the actual Tough As Nails canteen item rather than maintained separately by TANF.
Bottles and Juices
Supported bottle containers expose 250 mB of standard Forge fluid handling per item.
Supported containers include:
- Empty vanilla Glass Bottle
- Vanilla Water Potion
- Tough As Nails Dirty Water Bottle
- Tough As Nails Purified Water Bottle
- Apple Juice
- Cactus Juice
- Chorus Fruit Juice
- Glow Berry Juice
- Melon Juice
- Pumpkin Juice
- Sweet Berry Juice
A compatible Forge fluid system can therefore fill a Glass Bottle with a supported Tough As Nails fluid, producing the appropriate existing bottle or Juice item.
The reverse also works: a supported bottle or Juice item can return its 250 mB to a compatible fluid handler and become an empty Glass Bottle.
Tough As Nails Juice items can stack. When a player uses a stacked Juice or bottle on a compatible fluid handler, TANF transfers exactly one item at a time: the remainder stays in the held stack and the resulting bottle is returned separately to the player inventory, or dropped normally if the inventory cannot accept it. The underlying item fluid handler remains single-container-only so a direct whole-stack capability call cannot multiply or destroy fluid.
Tanks and Machines
Supported Tough As Nails containers can interact with standard Forge fluid handlers.
This includes compatible:
- Tanks
- Machines
- Fluid storage blocks
- Create fluid systems
- Other mods using the standard Forge fluid capability
Water, Dirty Water and Purified Water can be transferred using canteens, bottles, or Minecraft buckets.
Juices can be transferred using bottles and Minecraft buckets, but not canteens.
When a filled canteen is used on a block that already exposes a fluid handler, TANF defers to that block rather than attempting to place the fluid into the world.
World Interaction
Tough As Nails remains responsible for its existing interaction with normal minecraft:water.
This preserves Tough As Nails behaviour for:
- Biome-sensitive water quality
- Water Cleansing
- Rain collectors
- Water cauldrons
- The
removeSourceBlocksconfiguration - Other native Tough As Nails water mechanics
TANF adds direct world interaction for the real Dirty Water and Purified Water fluids supplied by TANF or Tough As Nails Create Addon.
Canteen Source Pickup
A Dirty Water or Purified Water source block represents 1,000 mB, equivalent to four Tough As Nails fluid units.
To collect one directly into a canteen:
- The targeted fluid block must be a source block
- The canteen must be empty or already contain the same fluid
- The canteen must have at least 1,000 mB of free capacity
- The entire 1,000 mB source is transferred at once
- If the canteen cannot accept the full source, nothing is transferred
Canteen Source Placement
A canteen containing at least 1,000 mB of Dirty Water or Purified Water can place a corresponding source block into the world.
Exactly 1,000 mB is removed from the canteen when the source is placed.
If the clicked block is itself a compatible fluid handler, TANF leaves the interaction to that block instead.
Bottles and World Sources
Bottles hold only 250 mB, so TANF does not partially consume a 1,000 mB Dirty Water or Purified Water world source to fill one.
Custom-fluid world pickup and placement is therefore handled by canteens and buckets rather than bottles.
Cauldron Interaction
TANF extends cauldron interaction without turning vanilla cauldrons into generic fluid tanks.
Normal Water continues to use the vanilla Water Cauldron. TANF provides separate layered cauldron states for:
- Dirty Water
- Purified Water
- Apple Juice
- Cactus Juice
- Chorus Fruit Juice
- Glow Berry Juice
- Melon Juice
- Pumpkin Juice
- Sweet Berry Juice
Each bottle or canteen transfer moves one Tough As Nails fluid unit, 250 mB, and changes the cauldron by one level. Fluids cannot be mixed in the same cauldron.
Bottles and Juices
Bottle interactions are direct and do not require sneaking:
- An empty Glass Bottle takes one level from a supported filled cauldron
- A supported filled bottle or Juice adds one level to an empty or matching cauldron
- The resulting filled or empty bottle is exchanged one item at a time when the held stack contains multiple items
Canteens
Canteens use an explicit direction so partially filled canteens remain unambiguous:
- Right-click a supported filled cauldron to take one 250 mB fluid unit into the canteen
- Sneak-right-click an empty or matching cauldron to place one 250 mB fluid unit from the canteen
- Juices remain unavailable to canteens because Tough As Nails has no corresponding Juice canteen item states
Campfire Purification
A lit Campfire or Soul Campfire directly beneath a Dirty Water cauldron gradually purifies its contents. The cauldron must remain continuously heated for 30 seconds (600 ticks); removing or extinguishing the campfire before that time resets the heating cycle.
- Dirty Water becomes Purified Water after the heating period
- The existing cauldron fill level is preserved
- Normal Water is deliberately unchanged so vanilla and other-mod Water Cauldron interactions remain compatible
- Purified Water and Juices are unchanged
This is a cauldron-specific purification path. It does not replace Tough As Nails' existing Water Cleansing, biome-sensitive water selection or other native water mechanics.
Fluid Provider Selection
Without Tough As Nails Create Addon
TANF registers its own tanfluids: fluids, fluid blocks and buckets for:
- Dirty Water
- Purified Water
- Apple Juice
- Cactus Juice
- Chorus Fruit Juice
- Glow Berry Juice
- Melon Juice
- Pumpkin Juice
- Sweet Berry Juice
The TANF buckets are added to Tough As Nails' existing toughasnails:main creative tab.
The fluid textures are adapted from the MIT-licensed Tough As Nails Create Addon.
With Tough As Nails Create Addon
TANF does not register competing fluids, fluid blocks or buckets.
Instead, it resolves the equivalent tanca: fluids and supplies the missing standard item fluid-capability layer to Tough As Nails containers.
Create Compatibility
No Create-specific Java code or dedicated Create filling/emptying recipes are required for TANF's container layer.
Create and other Forge fluid systems interact with supported Tough As Nails containers through the standard Forge fluid capability.
Expected combinations:
| Installed | Behaviour |
|---|---|
| TAN + TANF | TANF fluids and buckets + fluid-capable TAN containers |
| TAN + TANF + Create | Standard capability-based Create interoperability |
| TAN + TANF + TANCA | TANCA remains the fluid provider; TANF provides container capability |
| TAN + TANF + Create + TANCA | TANCA remains the fluid provider; TANF provides container capability |
Reporting Issues
If you encounter a compatibility issue with another mod, or find a machine setup that behaves incorrectly, please report it via the [project issue tracker (https://github.com/pcolb1/TANFluids/issues) so it can be investigated.
