Topsy Turvy

Water burns. Lava is a nice warm bath. Zombies burn at night, fish breathe air, and the best mining tool in the game is your fist.

Everything you know about Minecraft, upside down. Water burns. Lava is a nice warm bath. Your bed explodes in the Overworld and is perfectly cozy in the Nether. Zombies burn at night, fish breathe air, and the best mining tool in the game is your fist.

  • Loader: NeoForge 26.3 (built on 26.3.0.39-beta), Minecraft 26.3, Java 25
  • Dependencies: none
  • Install: drop the jar in your mods folder. For multiplayer, install it on the server and on every client.
  • Works in: singleplayer, LAN and dedicated servers

Every single change has its own on/off switch. Hate the lava rain? Turn it off. Love it? Turn on "Lava Rain Burns Mobs" too and watch the world end.

What gets flipped

🛏️ Beds and respawn anchors

  • Beds explode in the Overworld. Intentional Game Design.
  • In the Nether and the End, beds are safe. Sleep at any hour and set your spawn there.
  • A full night's sleep in a Nether bed also skips the night in the Overworld, so your friends wake up to sunshine.
  • Respawn anchors work everywhere except the Nether, where they now blow up.

🔥 Water and lava trade places

No retextures, so it all looks normal. That's the trap.

  • Water sets you on fire and hurts like lava. Swimming is now an extreme sport.
  • Lava is harmless and puts you out when you're burning.
  • When the two meet, the water hardens instead: water source + lava = obsidian, flowing water = cobblestone, water falling onto lava = stone. Portals still work, you just build them backwards.
  • Water flows slow and short like old lava. Lava flows fast and far and makes infinite sources. Infinite water pools don't work anymore.
  • Water works in the Nether. Buckets, ice and wet sponges all behave.
  • Lava keeps farmland moist. Water doesn't. Good luck explaining that to the villagers.
  • Broken ice always leaves water behind, even in the Nether. Which, reminder, burns.

🌋 Lava rain

  • Rain in the Overworld is lava. It sets you on fire, never puts fires out, and fills cauldrons with lava.
  • It's drawn as glowing orange drops that smoke when they land.
  • It never places lava blocks, so your base survives. You might not.
  • Mobs and animals are spared by default (otherwise every farm dies on the first rainy day). One switch makes them burn too.

⛏️ Mining, but wrong

  • Your bare fist mines stone like an iron pickaxe. Stone, deepslate, obsidian: punch them.
  • Ores only drop for a bare fist. Hit diamond ore with a pickaxe and you get nothing, slowly.
  • Pickaxes mine stone at fist speed. Efficiency V? Doesn't care.
  • Dirt and grass are tough now. They're as slow as stone by hand and only drop with a shovel.
  • Pickaxes dig dirt and grass as fast as a shovel, but the dirt still only drops for a shovel.
  • Ancient debris stays vanilla: diamond pickaxe, like always. Some things are sacred.

🧟 Mobs

  • Zombies, skeletons and phantoms burn at night, under the open sky, and walk around happily in daylight.
  • Monsters spawn in the light: in broad daylight, or right next to your torches. Dark caves are the safest place in the world now. Torches attract mobs.
  • Endermen got a little too excited about the new rules, so they spawn at a quarter of their usual rate in the Overworld (adjustable).
  • Zombies, skeletons, piglins and iron golems can swim. Your moat no longer works. Neither does your pillar-and-water trap.
  • Fish, squid, dolphins, axolotls, tadpoles and nautiluses live happily on land and drown in water. Put them back in the ocean if you're a monster.
  • Witches throw a completely random potion every time. Sometimes that's Harming. Sometimes it's Night Vision. Sometimes it's a bottle of water. Good luck.

🏰 The Nether, rearranged

  • Blazes now live in bastions. New bastions come with blazes instead of piglins, and the treasure room's magma cube spawner is a blaze spawner.
  • Piglins and brutes now live in fortresses, and the fortress spawner spawns piglins.
  • Piglins don't care about gold anymore. They will attack you in full gold armor.
  • Blazes do care. Wear one gold armor piece and they leave you alone… until you hit one. Then every blaze nearby comes for you.

⚡ For speedrunners

  • Blazes drop ender pearls.
  • Endermen drop blaze rods.
  • Good luck with your seed.

🌾 Blocks, items and crops

  • Sand drops flint (10% of the time). Silk Touch still keeps the sand.
  • Gravel never drops flint.
  • Gravel smelts into glass. Sand doesn't.
  • Fully grown crops only give back their seed. Break a crop that is still growing and you get the full harvest. Patience is now punished.

⚔️ Raids

  • Bad Omen starts a raid wherever you are in the Overworld, out in the open, in your base, on your boat…
  • …except in a village. In a village, nothing happens. Villagers are finally safe.

🍖 Food and farming

  • Rotten flesh is the best food in the game. It fills you up like steak and never gives you Hunger. Zombies are walking lunch.
  • Milk is bad for you. It no longer cures anything. Instead it gives you every bad effect in the game (except Instant Damage) for 10 seconds.
  • Cows give lava. Bucket + cow = lava bucket. Your fuel problems are solved, your milk problems aren't.
  • Feeding animals makes them younger. Give an adult cow wheat and it turns back into a calf. Breeding is cancelled.
  • Bone meal kills plants. Crops and saplings wither into dead bushes, grass turns to dirt. Gardeners, beware.

🔴 Redstone

  • Redstone torches turn on when they're powered and off when they aren't.
  • Repeaters invert their signal: no input means a strong output. Everything is on by default.
  • Old builds will now do the opposite of what they did. That's the point.

💥 Explosions

  • TNT builds instead of blowing up. It breaks nothing and throws up a hollow mossy cobblestone dome around the blast. It still hurts.
  • Creepers build. That hiss now means a hollow mossy cobblestone dome is about to go up around you. It still hurts, and now you're trapped.

✨ Enchanting

  • Enchanting gives you levels. No level requirement, and you walk away with the levels it would have cost (lapis is still used).
  • Curse of Vanishing is a blessing. Items with it stay with you when you die and come back when you respawn.

💰 Trading

  • Villagers trade backwards. Whatever they used to sell, they now buy from you for emeralds. Whatever they used to buy, they now sell you as junk (dirt, sticks, dead bushes, poisonous potatoes…).
  • Villagers are scared of iron golems and run away from their own bodyguards.
  • The wandering trader buys anything. One dirt? 37 emeralds. A stick? 52. One sale per item per trader, so make it count.

🌡️ Climate, lightning and sleep

  • Lightning comes out of the ground, bursting upward in a shower of sparks, lava and smoke.
  • Hot biomes are cold and cold biomes are hot. Deserts, savannas and badlands get snow and rain; snowy plains and icy peaks get (lava) rain and no snow. New chunks generate that way too, so snowy dunes are a thing.
  • Water in formerly snowy biomes burns twice as hard. Frozen rivers are now the hottest water in the world.
  • You can only sleep with monsters nearby. No monsters around? "You may not rest now. There are no monsters nearby."

Settings

Every change above has its own switch, sorted into pages (Beds, Water and Lava, Lava Rain, Mining, Mobs, Fortresses and Bastions, Blocks and Crops, Raids, Food and Farming, Redstone and Explosions, Enchanting, Trading, Climate and Sleep). A few have sliders: the enderman spawn rate, the flint chance, how hard dirt is, and how long lava rain keeps you burning.

  • In game: press Esc and click Topsy-Turvy Settings in the bottom-left corner of the pause menu. Changes apply immediately.
  • Per world: every world keeps its own settings (serverconfig/topsyturvy-synced.toml in the world folder).
  • On a server: the server's settings are sent to everyone who joins.
  • The bastion, fortress, villager-trade and climate changes only affect things generated after you change them (new chunks, new villager trades). Everything else applies right away.

Data-pack tags

Tag What's in it
topsyturvy:needs_shovel (blocks) Dirt, grass, podzol, mycelium, paths, farmland
topsyturvy:fist_only (blocks) All vanilla ores
topsyturvy:vanilla_mining (blocks) Blocks that skip every mining change (ancient debris)
topsyturvy:inverted_crops (blocks) Wheat, carrots, potatoes, beetroots, nether wart, cocoa
topsyturvy:learns_to_swim (entities) Zombies, skeletons, piglins, golems and friends
topsyturvy:breathes_air (entities) Fish, squid, dolphins, axolotls, tadpoles, nautiluses

Survival tips from the other side

  • Carry a fire resistance potion. Rivers are now hazards.
  • Dig down. It's dark, quiet and nothing spawns there. The surface at noon is the dangerous part.
  • Put your torches far away from your house. Monsters are drawn to light… but you need one nearby to sleep. Good luck balancing that.
  • Take your pickaxe off before you hit an ore.
  • Pack rotten flesh, not steak. And never, ever drink the milk.
  • Need levels? Go enchant something.
  • Nether portal: put a water source right next to lava. The water turns into obsidian. Pour it on top and you just get stone.

FAQ

Is this a joke mod? Yes. A very thorough one.

Can I turn off just the bits I don't like? Yes, every change has its own switch. See Settings.

Does it work with other mods? It changes vanilla rules, so most mods are fine. Modded ores are left alone unless you add them to topsyturvy:fist_only. Modded mobs follow the new spawn-in-the-light rule if they use the vanilla monster spawn checks.

Will it wreck my existing world? Only in the ways it's supposed to. Turn the mod off and everything goes back to normal. Existing bastions and fortresses keep whatever generated in them.

Is there a version for 1.21.1 / Fabric? Not right now. Topsy-Turvy is built for NeoForge on Minecraft 26.3.
