TONI's Better Mansions

The woodland mansion becomes a walled manor estate, different in every world: towers, 30 kinds of rooms, a secret room, a vault behind a lever puzzle, a hedge maze, a graveyard chapel, and a spruce manor in the taiga.

Better Mansions

The vanilla woodland mansion is a big box of cobblestone and dark oak lost in the forest. Better Mansions puts a walled manor estate in its place: a house of two or three storeys with towers and a cellar, thirty kinds of rooms, a library with a secret room, a vault behind a lever puzzle, and gardens with a hedge maze, a chapel and its graveyard, a pond, a greenhouse.

No two alike: every manor is put together from its own seed. Woodland explorer maps still lead you to it.

A manor estate in the dark forest

The Estate

The ground is levelled round the house and closed in by a stone wall, a hedge or iron railings. You come in through a gatehouse or between gate piers, and a drive lined with lamps takes you up to a fountain in front of the door. A terrace of paving runs all round the house, and each corner of the estate holds a garden of its own.

The House

A main block of three rows (rooms at the back, a long gallery in the middle, rooms at the front), with wings and towers that make it a block, an L or an H. A stone ground floor and timber-framed storeys above it, or stone all the way up; gabled or hipped roofs of shingles or slate; towers crowned with spires, pyramids or battlements; chimneys, dormers, window boxes and shutters. Under it, a cellar. Over it, an attic.

The Rooms

Every room is furnished for what it is:

  • Ground floor: the entrance hall with its stair, the kitchen, the dining room with its long table and chandeliers, the ballroom on a chequered floor, the library, the parlour, the music room, the war room, the armory, the pantry, an office.
  • First floor: the master bedroom, bedrooms, a nursery, a bathroom, a study, the picture gallery, the chapel.
  • The top floor of a three-storey manor: servants' quarters and a dormitory, a map room, a trophy room, storerooms, and the odd ones: an allay locked in a cell, a room of pumpkins, a room of spiders, a ritual room with its evokers.
  • The cellar: a long hall with a wine cellar, a prison, a crypt, a laboratory and the vault.

Secrets and the Vault

  • The secret room: one of the library's bookshelves carries a lever. Pull it and two shelves slide aside into the wall, and a hidden chamber opens behind them.
  • The vault: three levers in the cellar hall, each under an item frame. The one under the gold ingot opens the vault's iron door. The other two make the dispensers above them shoot at whoever pulled them.
  • Traps: tripwires across the cellar hall with dispensers in the walls, and pressure plates over dispensers in the dead ends of the maze.
  • Illagers: vindicators, evokers and pillagers about the house and the grounds, a witch, and spawners in the crypts and the spider room.

The Gardens

Four gardens round the house, picked by the seed: a hedge maze with a chest in the middle, a parterre of flower beds and box hedges, a pond with a gazebo and a jetty, a chapel with its graveyard and a crypt under it, a greenhouse, a kitchen garden, an orchard, an archery range, stables.

The Taiga Manor

The manor has a spruce cousin: a structure of its own that stands in the taiga, snowy taiga included, built of spruce with its own colours. Find it with /locate structure tonismansions:taiga_mansion. And in a pale garden (1.21.4 and later) the woodland manor is built of pale oak.

No Two Alike

Every manor rolls its own:

  • The plan: block, L or H, two or three storeys, which rooms there are and where, mirrored or not, and which way it faces.
  • The build: the stone of the ground floor, the panels of the storeys above, the roof and its shape, the towers' tops.
  • The grounds: the bounds, the gate and the four gardens.
  • Its state: kept, overgrown with vines and moss, or abandoned.

Every Version

Every version from 1.19 to 26.3: Fabric, Forge on every version Forge shipped for, and NeoForge from 1.20.1 on. Pick the file that matches your game.

It requires TONI's Structure Lib, the engine of the structure series: the manor is written once and the lib builds it in every version. On Fabric it also needs Fabric API. Both are marked as dependencies, so the CurseForge app installs them with it.

  • Replaces woodland mansions in newly generated chunks; the ones already generated are left alone.
  • The same places as vanilla: /locate structure minecraft:mansion and woodland explorer maps find it.
  • Fifteen loot tables of its own; some chests also roll the vanilla woodland mansion table.
  • Server-side: clients do not need it.

FAQ

Do I need any other mod?
Yes: TONI's Structure Lib, and on Fabric Fabric API.

Do I need it on the client?
No. It is a server-side mod. Installing it on a client as well is harmless.

Can I add it to an existing world?
Yes. Mansions in chunks you have not generated yet will be the new ones.

How do I find one?
Buy a woodland explorer map from a cartographer, or /locate structure minecraft:mansion. For the spruce manor, /locate structure tonismansions:taiga_mansion.

How do I open the vault?
Look at the item frames over the three levers. Only one of them is the right one.

Older versions?
1.19 is the floor, as for the rest of the series built on the lib.

Modpacks?
Go ahead.
