Description
Thunderhead
Turn every thunderstorm into a spectacle.
Thunderhead is a cinematic Minecraft lightning mod for 1.21.1, available for Fabric and NeoForge. It transforms thunderstorms with huge procedural bolts, dynamic branching, shockwaves, impact particles, transient illumination and rolling thunder that lasts up to fifteen seconds. No external shader pack is required.

- ā” Huge procedural lightning with unique branches and tapering channels
- š Rolling thunder that lasts 4 to 15 seconds, assembled at runtime from a dozen independent layers
- ā A storm front on the horizon ā 15 to 100 forked cloud-to-ground channels a second while a roll runs
- š„ Shockwaves and impact VFX with sparks, debris, smoke and ash
- š® Ball lightning ā a rare drifting plasma sphere left behind by a strike
- š Water impacts with spray, steam and surface ripples
- š” Transient scene illumination and screen flashes
- š§© An API for other mods ā raise your own lightning, style it, listen for strikes
- š® Fabric + NeoForge for Minecraft 1.21.1
A cinematic Minecraft lightning overhaul
Thunderhead turns a lightning strike into a complete event. The channel grows across the sky, the impact floods the landscape with cold light, a pressure wave tears over the surface, and the thunder arrives afterwards from the correct distance.

Realistic thunder, at the speed of sound
Thunder here is not a sound file. A rolling event is built at runtime out of a dozen independent layers ā a crack, a boom, low walls, irregular overlapping rolls, a distant grumble and a long decay ā each with its own bearing, delay, pitch and envelope, so no two storms roll the same way. The camera reacts to the individual booms as they arrive rather than shaking on a timer.
Behind the sound, the horizon fills with real forked cloud-to-ground channels: one tight storm front placed relative to your render distance, not flashes scattered across the whole sky.
What changes?
Lightning
- Seeded procedural geometry ā the same strike looks the same for every player
- Thick trunks, tapering forks and micro-branches, each level visibly thinner than the last
- Multi-stroke flashes, with a leader that visibly travels from cloud to ground
- Sky-spanning cloud canopy
- Cold-white core with blue/violet emissive layers
Impact
- Ground shockwave and impact burst
- Sparks, micro-arcs, debris, smoke, steam, ash and embers ā no vanilla particle is used anywhere
- Surface ripple
- Water-specific spray and mist
- Short-lived arcs on moving nearby entities
- A branching Lichtenberg scar burned into the ground by a direct hit
Atmosphere and sound
- Additive impact illumination and extended sky flash
- Screen flash and camera pressure impulse
- Custom close cracks, heavy booms, distant thunder and rolling storm events
- Five original thunder profiles plus a sub-bass thump and an arc crackle
- Physical sound delay based on distance
Every asset is original
No vanilla lightning renderer, thunder sound, particle type or borrowed asset is used. Every bundled texture, GLSL program, OGG and even the mod icon is generated from a script with fixed seeds ā nothing is sampled from anywhere.
For mod developers
Thunderhead has a small client-side API. Raise your own lightning, decide where it lands and at what angle, style it ā thickness, branching, reach, arbitrary RGB ā choose its thunder and its debris, or listen for every strike the mod draws. It degrades to a no-op when the mod is absent, so an optional integration cannot crash its host.

No external shaders required
The full baseline effect renders without an external shader pack. Thunderhead includes its own effect shaders and can fall back to Minecraft's stock rendering program if they fail to load.
Third-party pipelines are detected so framebuffer-dependent distortion and the extra bloom boost can be disabled safely. Compatibility with a specific shader pack must still be tested per pack and version.
Performance and accessibility
Choose Low, Medium, High or Ultra, then tune particle limits, effect range, LOD and concurrent effects. Reduced-flashing mode removes rapid re-strikes and flicker, caps exposure, and respects Minecraft's Hide Lightning Flashes option. No mod integration can override it.
Client or server?
- Client only: all visual and audio effects work while connecting to any server.
- Installed on client and server: also enables configurable near-miss damage and rare ball lightning.
Everything is derived from data the server already replicates, so every player sees the same storm without a single custom packet.
Vanilla lightning rods, copper weathering, fire and mob conversions remain vanilla behavior.
Requirements
- Minecraft 1.21.1
- Java 21
- Fabric Loader 0.16.14+ with Fabric API, or NeoForge 21.1+
Quick answers
Does Thunderhead require shaders?
No. Thunderhead is designed to look dramatic without an external Minecraft shader pack.
Is Thunderhead client-side?
The complete lightning, thunder and visual-effects overhaul works from the client. Installing Thunderhead on the server also enables configurable near-miss damage and rare ball lightning.
Which Minecraft versions and mod loaders are supported?
Thunderhead 1.1.0 supports Minecraft 1.21.1 on Fabric and NeoForge.
Can other mods use Thunderhead?
Yes ā see the API reference.
Compatibility status
- Fabric / NeoForge: automated builds verified
- No external shader pack: supported by design; manual release capture still required
- Iris: not claimed until the chosen Iris + shader-pack versions are manually tested
- OptiFine: not tested; do not list as supported
