thermal-mod
A thermal imaging mod for Minecraft Forge 1.20.1
Dependencies
Embeddium
This might seem odd, since almost no mods require Embeddium as a dependency. Future updates will ensure the mod no longer requires it.
Embeddium is used to make the experience more realistic, because without it the block heating effect may have bugs.
Features
Two Vision Modes
Thermal Imager – Keep it in your inventory and press X to activate thermal vision.
Night Vision Goggles – Press X to activate green phosphor screen style night vision.
If both are carried, thermal vision takes priority.
Thermal Imaging Details
Entity heat: Mobs emit bright white light. Attenuation factors include:
Distance falloff: On clear days, no attenuation within about 180 blocks; effective range decreases in rain.
Weather effects: Rain scatters infrared, darkening distant views.
Submerged in water: Smooth cooling when fully submerged.
Biome temperature: Snowy biomes have a cold background, yielding high contrast.
Block heat sources – Heat-emitting blocks (torches, fire, lava, magma blocks, campfires, furnaces, etc.) render as green markers in their true shape. A post-processing shader identifies them as white hot, preventing false positives from colored wool or sunsets.
Residual heat diffusion – Heated solid blocks display a soft glowing halo above them (residual heat effect).
Standing heat transfer – Stationary mobs gradually heat the block beneath them.
Particles and fog – Infrared penetrates smoke and fog; particles are suppressed and fog distance is pushed further during thermal imaging.
Night Vision Details
Green phosphor screen simulation (single-channel green, high contrast).
Full brightness illumination.
Compatibility
Embeddium – Fully supported
YSM (Yes Steve Model) – Fully supported
TACZ (Timeless and Classics: Zero) – Fully supported
ncompatible
Shaders may cause the mod to malfunction.
Keybind
X – Toggle vision mode (Off → Thermal → Night Vision → Off).
Environmental Adaptation
Biome temperature, rain, snowfall, and underwater status are smoothly interpolated for natural transitions.
In deserts and certain terrains you may have difficulty seeing the path.
Shader parameters dynamically adjust contrast and brightness based on the environment.
Performance
On a PC with Intel integrated graphics (10th gen i7) at 2K resolution, average 55 FPS.
