The Veil Below 1.0.1 — Pacing & Hollow Fixes

Version 1.0.1 focuses on improving early-game horror pacing and fixing issues that could prevent players from naturally reaching major encounters.

Exposure & Progression Rebalance

The original 1.0.0 exposure progression was significantly slower than intended, causing some players to experience mostly Micro Horror events for long periods.

Exposure stage requirements have been rebalanced:

  • Stage 1 — NORMAL: 0

  • Stage 2 — WATCHING: 8

  • Stage 3 — DISTORTION: 20

  • Stage 4 — REVELATION: 50

  • Stage 5 — BREACH: 110

  • Stage 6 — ENTITY: 220

This allows major horror systems to become available much earlier while preserving exposure-based progression.

Updated Natural Progression

With the new pacing:

  • Watcher encounters can begin much earlier.

  • Null Sessions can naturally begin earlier.

  • Basic Friend Anomalies become available earlier.

  • Gazer encounters become available significantly sooner.

  • The Fault becomes available sooner.

  • Null Retaliation becomes reachable during normal play.

  • The Hollow no longer requires extremely long sessions before becoming eligible.

Randomness, cooldowns, context checks, and event eligibility still apply.

Major encounters are not guaranteed on a fixed timer.

Passive Exposure

Added a lightweight passive exposure system for active Survival/Adventure players.

  • Active players gradually gain exposure during normal gameplay.

  • Prevents unlucky players from remaining permanently stuck at very low exposure.

  • Does not replace exposure gained from horror events.

  • Does not apply normally to Spectator players.

  • AFK players do not continuously gain progression.

  • Designed to prevent long sessions containing only Micro Horror events.

Default passive progression:

  • Approximately +1 Exposure every 90 seconds of active gameplay.

Horror Pacing Improvements

Improved the overall first-hour experience.

The intended pacing is now approximately:

Early Game

Subtle sounds, Micro Horror and environmental events begin establishing paranoia.

Early-Mid Progression

Watcher, Null Sessions and basic Friend Anomalies can become eligible.

Mid Progression

Gazer, The Fault and Null Retaliation can begin appearing naturally.

Later Progression

The Hollow and more severe systems become available without requiring several hours of exposure grinding.

The goal is to maintain unpredictability without allowing players to spend 30–60 minutes seeing only minor events.

The Hollow Fixes

Fixed issues where The Hollow could fail to appear even when manually triggered.

Improved Hollow spawn candidate searching:

  • More valid spawn positions are checked.

  • A single failed candidate no longer immediately cancels the entire encounter.

  • Improved failure diagnostics.

  • Improved safe-ground validation.

  • Improved loaded-chunk spawn searching.

  • Existing natural Hollow safety rules remain intact.

New Hollow Debug Commands

Added/improved operator tools for testing The Hollow:

  • /veilbelow hollow force <player>

    • Forces a full Hollow encounter while bypassing normal exposure, cooldown and pacing requirements.

  • /veilbelow hollow spawn <player>

    • Spawns the Overworld Hollow form for entity/approach testing.

  • /veilbelow hollow enter <player>

    • Directly enters The Hollow dimension for dimension testing.

Natural gameplay still uses normal eligibility, cooldown and safety checks.

Fixes

  • Fixed progression being too dependent on a small number of exposure-granting events.

  • Fixed situations where players could remain in Stage 1 for excessively long periods.

  • Improved availability of major horror encounters during normal multiplayer sessions.

  • Improved Hollow encounter debugging and spawn reliability.

  • Improved error reporting when a Hollow spawn location cannot be found.

  • Preserved existing event cooldowns and anti-spam protections.
