The Veil Below
The Veil Below is a psychological and cosmic horror mod for Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.1, built with NeoForge.
It is not designed around constant monster attacks or endless jumpscares. Instead, the mod slowly makes the player distrust the world, the people around them, and even the game itself.
You may hear footsteps that do not belong to anyone, notice animals staring in impossible ways, see distant figures watching from the fog, receive warnings from something that should not exist, or enter a version of the Overworld that feels deeply wrong.
Many events are contextual, unpredictable, exposure-based, and player-specific. In multiplayer, one player may experience something that nobody else can see or hear.
Important Content Warning
The Veil Below contains:
-
Sudden and loud jumpscare sounds
-
Full-screen horror imagery
-
Screen glitching and visual distortion
-
Camera shake and brief FOV effects
-
Flashing or rapidly changing images
-
Psychological horror themes
-
Disturbing ambient sounds
-
Optional native Windows horror dialogs
Players using headphones should begin with a lower volume.
The mod includes a first-launch warning screen, configurable jumpscare volume, reduced visual effects, camera-shake controls, flashing controls, and an emergency client-effect reset option.
Optional Native Windows Horror Effect
One rare event, The Fault, can display a harmless native Windows dialog containing fictional horror text such as:
SYSTEM ERROR
SOMETHING IS NEAR YOU.
This is an intentional part of the horror experience.
The Veil Below is not malware.
The mod does not:
-
Modify Windows system files
-
Modify the Windows Registry
-
Delete personal files
-
Change operating-system volume
-
Shut down or restart the computer
-
Start or terminate other applications
-
Intentionally crash Minecraft
Native Windows dialogs are disabled by default, require explicit permission on first launch, and can be disabled at any time in the mod settings. Players on unsupported platforms receive a safe in-game alternative.
Major Features
Hidden Exposure System
Every player has a persistent, hidden cosmic exposure value with multiple progression stages.
As exposure increases:
-
Events become stranger and less predictable
-
More dangerous encounters become eligible
-
Reality distortions become more noticeable
-
Existing entities may behave or appear incorrectly
-
The world gradually becomes less trustworthy
Exposure is never shown directly to normal players.
The Watcher
A distant, non-combat entity that silently observes the player.
The Watcher:
-
Appears during day or night
-
Prefers darker positions
-
Maintains its distance
-
Does not attack
-
Disappears when clearly observed
It exists to create paranoia, not combat.
The Gazer
A nearly featureless black silhouette that watches from a distance.
Looking directly at The Gazer can immediately trigger:
-
A full-screen horror image
-
A loud jumpscare sound
-
Screen jitter and glitch effects
-
A short blackout
-
Instant disappearance of the entity
The encounter is player-specific in multiplayer.
Null Sessions
Null behaves as though an impossible player has joined the world.
A Null Session may begin with:
Null joined the game
If players provoke Null through chat, it can become angry and choose a random player as its target.
Null may then appear behind that player while remaining invisible to everyone else. Turning around and looking at it triggers a unique black-and-white jumpscare.
The player who provoked Null is not necessarily the player who will be punished.
Friend Anomalies
Multiplayer players may briefly see their friends behaving in impossible ways.
Possible anomalies include:
-
Heads turning beyond normal limits
-
A friend’s head tracking the observer while their body faces away
-
A face becoming completely black
-
A player appearing frozen before snapping to their real position
-
A very brief Null-like transformation
These effects are observer-specific. The affected friend remains completely normal on their own screen.
The Visitor
Remaining inside a detected house for too long may attract The Visitor.
After approximately ten minutes:
-
Something knocks on an exterior door
-
A few seconds later, the lock or handle is tested
-
The door does not open
-
No creature appears
If the player remains inside for several more minutes, their hidden exposure may increase as a punishment for relying too heavily on safety.
Sleepless Nights
Sleeping is not always guaranteed to work.
Persistent Sleepless Night events contain multiple escalating phases and can:
-
Prevent sleep
-
Produce sounds near the bed
-
Increase tension around the player’s home
-
Affect individual players safely in multiplayer
House Sieges and Window Events
The mod includes bounded house detection and contextual home-based events such as:
-
Rooftop sounds
-
Door scratching
-
Window watchers
-
Figures stalking windows
-
Rare glass-impact events
-
Sounds coming from places that should be safe
Player structures are not intended to be randomly destroyed.
Animal Anomalies
Ordinary animals may briefly appear physically impossible without changing their normal AI.
Anomalies include:
-
Head Twist
-
Missing Head
-
Impossible Tracking
Supported animals include pigs, cows, sheep, chickens, horses, wolves, and cats.
The Fault
The Fault is not a creature.
It is a reality-error event consisting of:
-
A powerful ominous sound
-
Screen corruption
-
RGB separation
-
Horizontal tearing
-
Camera shake
-
Distortion pulses
-
An optional native Windows warning
The message claims that something is nearby.
Nothing actually spawns.
The Hollow
The Hollow is both a mysterious entity and a separate horror dimension.
In the Overworld, The Hollow may appear at a distance and silently observe the player. Approaching it too closely can suddenly transport the player into The Hollow.
The dimension initially resembles the Overworld, but something is wrong:
-
The sky and lighting feel unnatural
-
Normal life is absent or reduced
-
The world is unusually silent
-
Impossible sounds occur
-
Distant lights have no source
-
Terrain and silhouettes may appear incorrectly
-
The Hollow repeatedly watches from different locations
During the approximately five-minute encounter, The Hollow may appear several times, gradually moving closer while never directly attacking.
After enough time passes, an exit portal appears near the player. Entering it returns the player safely to the Overworld.
The Bleeding World
The Overworld itself can become corrupted.
Persistent Veil Scars may create expanding regions where the normal world begins to bleed into something else.
Corruption has four main stages:
Touched
The region is almost normal, but colors, fog, sound, and animal behavior may feel slightly wrong.
Sick
The atmosphere becomes darker, ambient sound changes, distant terrain may appear incorrectly, and animals may react to the corruption.
Open
The Veil begins to separate visibly. Sky distortions, strange particles, directional audio errors, stronger ambience, and Hollow-related activity become possible.
Below
The region becomes trapped between the Overworld and The Hollow. Heavy fog, severe sky corruption, reversed particles, reality distortions, and Veil Storm eligibility become active.
Veil Hearts
At the center of a corrupted region is a Veil Heart.
A Veil Heart is not a normal mob. It is a living wound embedded in the world.
Players may:
-
Leave it alone and allow corruption to grow
-
Seal it and cause the region to recover gradually
-
Harvest it for power while allowing the corruption to remain dangerous
Corruption is designed to preserve player builds by default.
It does not normally destroy:
-
Containers
-
Stored items
-
Redstone systems
-
Player houses
-
Important block entities
Veil Storms
Powerful or overlapping corruption regions can produce a regional Veil Storm.
During a Veil Storm:
-
Dense fog covers the corrupted area
-
The sky becomes distorted
-
Strange particles move through the air
-
Low-frequency drones and distant sounds may appear
-
The Veil Heart becomes more active
-
Hollow-related phenomena become more likely
Veil Storms are regional and do not replace the weather of the entire Overworld.
Micro Horror Director
The mod contains a large collection of subtle psychological events managed by a dedicated pacing system.
Possible events include:
-
Single footsteps behind the player
-
Fake echoes of recently produced sounds
-
Short periods of impossible silence
-
UI corruption
-
Crosshair glitches
-
Brief fake health or experience display errors
-
Screen tearing
-
Static interference
-
Incorrect block sounds
-
Distant lights with no source
-
Time stutters
-
Low-frequency hums
-
False terrain silhouettes
The director includes intentional periods where nothing happens.
Silence is part of the horror.
Black Monoliths and Progression
Rare Black Monoliths can generate in newly explored Overworld chunks.
The mod also includes:
-
Black Stone
-
Strange Fragments
-
Forbidden Journal
-
Astral Compass
-
Veil Heart interactions
-
Hidden progression flags
-
Corruption and Hollow connections
The Forbidden Journal contains cryptic information rather than direct quest instructions.
The Astral Compass can react to important locations and corrupted regions.
Player-Specific Multiplayer Horror
Many horror systems are isolated per player.
This means:
-
One player may hear footsteps that others cannot
-
One player may see Null while everyone else sees nothing
-
One player may receive a jumpscare without affecting nearby players
-
Friend anomalies may only be visible to a chosen observer
-
Exposure, cooldowns, and event state remain separate per player
The Bleeding World and physical Veil Hearts are world-wide systems, while many hallucinations remain personal.
For multiplayer, install both The Veil Below and GeckoLib on the client and server.
