The Tallow Man — Changelog

v1.0.0-beta.11 — The Rules of Seed 201

Some rules are meant to keep you safe. Others are meant to see if you're listening.

This update expands the mystery surrounding the Tallow Man with interactive rules, hidden consequences, new discoveries, and a deeper storyline. Your decisions now matter more than ever.

The Rules — Can You Survive Them?

On your first morning, you'll discover a list of mysterious rules nailed to your door. Some are warnings. Others are traps.

  • Rule: Never Answer Your Name. Something may call your name in chat after dark. Respond within 30 seconds, and you'll discover what was calling.

  • Rule: Never Open the Door When He Knocks. If you hear knocking, leave the door closed. Open the wrong door, and he'll already be waiting in the doorway.

  • Rule: Never Sleep in Complete Darkness. Sleeping without a nearby light significantly increases the chance of a bedside encounter. These encounters can now begin earlier in the haunting.

  • Rule: Count Your Torches. Every torch, lantern, and candle you place is being counted. Eventually, something will whisper the exact number back to you.

Two of these rules can be directly broken, triggering unique encounters.

Expanded Lore — Uncover the Truth

The story of Seed 201 continues to grow.

  • 8 new pages added to Aldous Wren's journal, bringing the total to 24.

  • Mira's Diary: A new collection of personal entries revealing another perspective on the haunting.

  • R. Hale's Field Notebook: Research notes documenting disturbing discoveries.

  • server_log_201.txt: Mysterious server records containing clues about what happened.

  • The Rules: Can now also be discovered inside loot chests.

  • LORE.md: Expanded with additional background and story details.

New command: /tallowman lore <journal|mira|hale|log|rules> — Obtain complete lore collections.

Seed 201 — You Found It

Create a new world using the seed 201, and something changes.

  • The haunting begins immediately at Stage 2.

  • Early-game encounters become more threatening.

  • A hidden connection to the story awaits discovery.

“you found it.”

New Advancements & Commands

Four new advancements:

  • The Rules

  • You Answered

  • Who's There?

  • You Found It

New testing command: /tallowman callname

v1.0.0-beta.10 — The Horror Overhaul

You won't always see them coming. Sometimes, they're already there.

A major overhaul focused on making encounters more unpredictable, improving atmosphere, fixing broken behaviors, and eliminating bugs that made the haunting less effective.

Reworked Jumpscares — No Time to React

Every full-screen jumpscare has been redesigned to feel sudden and unavoidable.

  • Instant scares: No fade to black, warning stinger, or buildup. The creature appears on the very first frame.

  • Perfectly synchronized audio: Screams begin at the exact moment the creature appears.

  • Faster recovery: Scares last less than a second before cutting directly back to gameplay.

  • 9 new snap jumpscares: Three each for the Tallow Man, the Goatman, and Eyeshine.

  • Shorter face jumpscare: Reduced duration for a more abrupt experience.

  • Unpredictable Eyeshine encounters: Face-to-face confrontations no longer follow a fixed timer. Eyeshine might attack almost immediately, or simply stand there watching.

New Dread System

The old heartbeat mechanic has been replaced with a more immersive threat-awareness system.

  • Your heartbeat intensifies when a creature is nearby but outside your view.

  • The edges of your screen gradually darken as danger increases.

  • Hidden encounters no longer reveal themselves through predictable heartbeat cues.

  • New configuration option: dread

The Quiet After

The haunting now uses silence as part of the horror.

  • After a jumpscare, hunt, ambush, or Room encounter, paranormal activity stops for approximately 1–2 minutes.

  • Stage 4 encounters are better spaced to prevent constant interruptions.

  • Quiet periods make it harder to predict when something will happen next.

Smarter Monster Appearances

  • The Goatman and Eyeshine now appear slightly outside your field of view.

  • Creatures are less likely to visibly pop into existence.

  • Turning your head can reveal something that wasn't there a moment ago.

Multiplayer Improvements

  • Personal Haunting: Each player's monsters can be visible exclusively to that player.

  • Only the targeted player can trigger their personal creature's disappearance.

  • New configuration option: personalHaunting

Creature & Gameplay Fixes

The Tallow Man

  • Reduced hitbox to 0.7 × 1.9, allowing him to fit through normal doors and tunnels without changing his visual model.

  • Fixed bedside visits and surprise encounters failing inside houses.

  • Fixed rain causing certain appearances to instantly disappear.

  • WINDOW, COPY, SURPRISE, and introduction events now behave correctly during rainy weather.

  • Prevented multiple Tallow Men from appearing simultaneously during overlapping events.

  • Fixed underground appearances overlapping with Eyeshine.

  • Fixed post-Room encounters triggering incorrectly in daylight. Daytime now uses breathing behind the player instead.

  • Fixed screams being cut off when the Tallow Man disappears.

  • Added proper behavior on Peaceful difficulty.

  • Hidden appearances no longer reveal themselves through sleep-blocking messages.

Spawning & Environment

  • Spawns now use the player's actual ground level rather than nearby rooftops or treetops.

  • Monsters no longer spawn on leaves or directly inside the player's torchlight.

  • Fixed the Goatman's feeding scene spawning above ground in trees.

  • Underground encounters are now reserved for Eyeshine.

Eyeshine

  • Properly disappears when the player leaves the caves.

  • No longer remains indefinitely waiting to be noticed.

  • Ambient sounds can still occur in well-lit caves.

  • Can now appear inside standard two-block-high tunnels.

Other Fixes

  • Aldous's candles now trigger the appropriate stage introduction.

  • Sleeping through the night correctly advances the night counter.

  • Haunting music no longer plays in the Nether or End.

  • Music stages properly synchronize after reconnecting.

  • Fixed footstep echoes and blackout effects persisting between sessions or across dimensions.

  • Fixed lag spikes caused by home visits loading distant chunks.

  • The Goatman no longer targets baby animals, leashed animals, or animals with name tags.

  • Fixed voice chat crashes when a player disconnects mid-sentence.

v1.0.0-beta.9 — Creature Model & Animation Fixes

A focused update correcting model geometry, animation alignment, and visual inconsistencies across multiple creatures.

Eyeshine — Fixed Arm Geometry

  • Fixed a model-generation bug that incorrectly rotated angled body parts.

  • Eyeshine's upper arms now properly connect outward toward its elbows instead of bending inward.

  • Rebuilt the creature's models using the corrected generator.

Goatman Improvements

  • Corrected arm positioning and geometry.

  • Horns now curve outward as originally designed.

  • Fixed hair and loincloth alignment.

  • Improved consistency between the model and its animations.

Dead Pig Model Fixes

  • Corrected leg positioning.

  • Fixed exposed internal geometry.

  • Restored the intended appearance of the model.

Updated Blockbench Files

Re-exported the Eyeshine, Goatman, and Dead Pig models with their corrected geometry and animations.

v1.0.0-beta.8 — Eyeshine: Reborn

There's something beneath the surface. And it isn't human.

Eyeshine has been completely redesigned into a unique underground predator, with a new appearance, rebuilt animations, and improved visual presentation.

A Completely New Creature Design

Eyeshine is no longer visually similar to the Tallow Man.

Its redesigned body features:

  • Wet, nearly black skin that blends into unlit caves.

  • A hunched silhouette supported by backward-bending legs.

  • An unnaturally elongated neck.

  • Six glowing eyes that stand out in the darkness.

  • A lower jaw that splits sideways into two fanged mandibles.

  • Extremely long arms ending in pale, hooked claws.

  • A bony spinal ridge with faintly glowing markings.

  • A thin, unsettling tail.

Created with a new custom Blockbench model, texture, and emissive glowmask.

11 Completely Rebuilt Animations

  • Sniffing Idle: Subtle body twitches and moving mandibles.

  • Unnatural Stare: Eyeshine becomes motionless while tilting its head beyond normal limits.

  • Stalking Walk: Slow, deliberate knuckle-walking movement.

  • Spider Scuttle: Fast, disturbing movement with claws planted against the ground.

  • Ceiling Cling: Hangs overhead with its head twisted toward the player.

  • Corner Peek: Watches from around cave walls.

  • Rearing Scream: Raises its body as both mandibles split open.

  • Light Flinch: Reacts defensively to nearby light.

  • Three Jumpscare Animations: Unique close-range attacks synchronized with its screams.

Additional Improvements

  • Adjusted hitbox to match the creature's new hunched proportions.

  • Improved full-screen jumpscare framing.

  • Updated spawn egg with a darker appearance.

  • Saved and rebuilt all models and animations in Blockbench.

v1.0.0-beta.7 — Something Lives in the Caves

The deeper you go, the more you realize you aren't alone.

This update introduces an entirely new underground threat, expands the behavior of existing monsters, and reworks how fear and audio are delivered during encounters.

New Entity — Eyeshine

A mysterious creature that inhabits the darkness beneath your world.

Eyeshine features:

  • Custom Blockbench model and textures.

  • 11 unique animations, including three animated jumpscares.

  • Custom ElevenLabs audio, including clicking, skittering, breathing, and shrieks.

  • A dedicated underground haunting progression system.

  • Unique lore entries and advancements.

  • Its own spawn egg.

Underground Haunting System

Unlike the Tallow Man's normal progression, Eyeshine's haunting stages advance based on the amount of time you spend underground.

As its presence grows, Eyeshine may:

  • Observe you from dark corners.

  • Peek around cave walls.

  • Follow you through tunnels.

  • Cling to ceilings above your head.

  • Appear directly in front of you.

  • Become increasingly aggressive as the stages progress.

At Stage 4, Eyeshine begins actively hunting the player.

Light is your protection. Eyeshine avoids brightly lit areas and reacts to nearby light sources.

The Tallow Man — New Behaviors

WINDOW

  • Appears outside your windows at night.

  • Watches from the other side of the glass.

  • May begin knocking to get your attention.

COPY

  • Mirrors your movement.

  • Walk when you walk.

  • Stop when you stop.

  • Creates the unsettling impression that something is studying you.

The Goatman — New Behaviors

ROOF

  • Appears on rooftops or elevated ledges.

  • Watches the player from above.

CROSS

  • Suddenly bounds across the player's path on all fours.

  • Features a new galloping animation.

The Goatman no longer appears in underground encounters.

Audio & Jumpscare Improvements

Chase Music Removed

  • Hunts no longer trigger traditional chase music.

  • Instead, the atmosphere falls silent when a hunt begins.

  • Ambient haunting music remains during normal encounters.

Improved Scream Synchronization

  • All 12 animated jumpscares now synchronize their screams with the exact moment the creature's jaw opens.

  • Nearby players hear appropriately timed in-world screams.

  • Corrected synchronization for the Tallow Man and Goatman.
