What's new

The Archery Update — 0.1.0 Beta

English

First Public Beta

This is the first public beta of The Archery Update, a vanilla-inspired expansion focused on giving Minecraft's archery system more depth without replacing its original mechanics.

This version introduces the Quiver, Backpack, a functional Fletching Table, special arrows, Fittings for bows and crossbows, improved ammunition management, and custom 3D arrow projectiles.

Some systems included in this beta are still being evaluated and may be redesigned, rebalanced, or simplified in future versions.

Quiver

The Quiver is a portable container specifically designed for arrows.

How to obtain

The Quiver is crafted using:

  • 4 Rabbit Hides
  • 2 Strings
  • 1 Seal of Charge

The Seal of Charge is placed in the center of the crafting recipe.

A full crafting recipe image is available in the project gallery.

How it works

  • Stores up to 4 stacks of arrows.
  • Supports normal, spectral, tipped, and special arrows.
  • Its tooltip displays its real contents in a compact 2×2 preview.
  • A capacity bar shows how full the Quiver is.
  • Empty Quivers display an Empty state inspired by the vanilla Bundle interface.
  • Available in the base version and dyeable variants.

Arrow selection

When holding a Quiver in the main hand or off-hand:

  • Hold C.
  • Use the mouse wheel to switch between the arrow stacks stored inside.
  • A HUD appears showing the available arrow types and the currently selected stack.

When the selected stack becomes empty, the selection automatically moves to another available stack.

Ammunition priority

When firing, the game prioritizes ammunition approximately as follows:

Main-hand Quiver → Off-hand Quiver → available Quivers/inventory ammunition → vanilla fallback

The selected Quiver ammunition is therefore used before loose arrows when a compatible source is available.

Crossbows preserve the projectile that was actually loaded even if the selected Quiver arrow changes afterward.

Multishot keeps its vanilla consumption behavior and consumes only one projectile.

Infinity keeps its vanilla behavior and does not provide unlimited special, spectral, or tipped arrows.

Automatic pickup

Recoverable arrows picked up from the ground can automatically enter a compatible Quiver when space is available.

Backpack

The Backpack is a compact portable storage container based on the interaction philosophy of the vanilla Bundle.

How to obtain

The Backpack is crafted using:

  • 8 Leather
  • 1 Seal of Charge

Place the Seal of Charge in the center of the crafting grid and surround it completely with Leather.

A full crafting recipe image is available in the project gallery.

How it works

  • Stores up to 9 logical stacks.
  • Displays its contents using a progressive 3×3 preview.
  • Shows a capacity bar based on its real contents.
  • Displays Empty when no items are stored.
  • Supports the base version and dyed variants.
  • Includes restrictions intended to prevent problematic container nesting and duplication behavior.

The Backpack is intended as lightweight portable storage rather than a replacement for larger inventory systems.

Fletching Table

The vanilla Fletching Table has been transformed into a fully functional archery crafting station.

It uses a simple crafting structure:

Primary item + Material → Result

Depending on the item placed in the first slot, the second slot dynamically accepts compatible materials.

The interface includes contextual slot indicators that help communicate what can be placed in each slot.

The Fletching Table is currently used for:

  • crafting special arrows;
  • applying Fittings to bows;
  • applying Fittings to crossbows;
  • other archery-related crafting introduced by the mod.

The GUI has been redesigned while keeping Minecraft's vanilla visual language.

Special Arrows

This beta contains 13 special arrow types.

Unless otherwise specified, the standard special-arrow recipes use:

4 compatible arrows + 1 material → 4 special arrows

through the Fletching Table.

Impulse Arrow

Obtaining

4 Arrows + 1 Wind Charge → 4 Impulse Arrows

Use

Creates a strong knockback/impulse effect when hitting a target.

Useful for repositioning enemies or creating distance.

Anchor Arrow

Obtaining

4 Arrows + 1 Obsidian → 4 Anchor Arrows

Use

Designed to restrict the target's mobility.

On hit it can:

  • interrupt sprinting;
  • reduce movement/knockback momentum;
  • temporarily prevent jumping;
  • provide a short protection period against repeated Anchor applications.

Siege Arrow

Obtaining

8 Anchor Arrows + 1 Netherite Scrap → 8 Siege Arrows

This is the main exception to the usual 4-arrow recipe.

Use

A heavier combat arrow intended for protected targets.

It deals increased damage and can temporarily disable shields.

Fin Arrow

Obtaining

4 Arrows + 1 Tropical Fish → 4 Fin Arrows

Use

Designed specifically for underwater archery.

It retains substantially more movement and velocity while traveling through water than a normal arrow.

Thorn Arrow

Obtaining

4 Arrows + 1 Sweet Berries → 4 Thorn Arrows

Use

Applies a Thorn Wound based on the impact location.

Hits to different body regions can produce different wound strength, with headshots producing the strongest effect.

Some entities can be excluded from this mechanic where appropriate.

Fracture Arrow

Obtaining

4 Arrows + 1 Amethyst Shard → 4 Fracture Arrows

Use

Applies Fracture, temporarily increasing the target's vulnerability to physical damage.

Its visual identity is based around amethyst.

Darkness Arrow

Obtaining

4 Arrows + 1 Sculk Soul → 4 Darkness Arrows

Use

Applies the Darkness effect to the target.

Passing Light Arrow

Obtaining

4 Arrows + 1 Torch → 4 Passing Light Arrows

Use

Creates temporary light during flight and after interacting with the environment.

Unlike most special arrows, Passing Light Arrows are not intended to be recovered after use.

Redstone Arrow

Obtaining

4 Arrows + 1 Redstone Torch → 4 Redstone Arrows

Use

Allows an arrow impact to temporarily interact with redstone-compatible blocks through virtual redstone power without permanently placing a redstone component.

Ricochet Arrow

Obtaining

4 Arrows + 1 Slime Ball → 4 Ricochet Arrows

Use

Can rebound from surfaces instead of immediately stopping on the first collision.

This creates alternative shooting angles and allows shots that would not be possible with a normal arrow.

Its balance is still under review for future versions.

Nausea Arrow

Obtaining

4 Arrows + 1 Potent Sulfur → 4 Nausea Arrows

Use

Applies the Nausea effect to the target.

Echo Arrow

Obtaining

4 Spectral Arrows + 1 Echo Shard → 4 Echo Arrows

Use

Produces detection pulses around the projectile's impact area.

The current implementation uses two detection ranges, approximately:

  • 8 blocks
  • 16 blocks

Detected entities can receive a temporary Glowing effect, allowing the arrow to function as a scouting and detection tool.

Its effect can operate through obstacles and underwater.

Blindness Arrow

Obtaining

4 Darkness Arrows + 1 Azure Bluet → 4 Blindness Arrows

Use

Applies the Blindness effect to the target.

3D Arrow Projectiles

All 13 special arrows use actual Minecraft-style 3D arrow projectiles.

They reuse the vanilla arrow geometry and rendering behavior while using individual textures for each arrow type.

This means their special appearance remains visible:

  • during flight;
  • while rotating;
  • after becoming stuck in a block;
  • when fired from bows;
  • when fired from crossbows;
  • with Multishot;
  • when fired by dispensers.

They are not flat item sprites rendered as projectiles.

Fittings

Fittings are an experimental customization system for bows and crossbows.

In this beta, Fittings are obtained through exploration and specific world activities rather than normal crafting.

Once obtained, they can currently be applied to compatible bows or crossbows through the Fletching Table.

Precision Fitting

Obtaining: Desert Pyramid loot — approximately 12.5% chance

Effect: Improves projectile precision and reduces dispersion, with a slower preparation/draw tradeoff.

Swift Fitting

Obtaining: Piglin bartering — approximately 5% chance

Effect: Reduces bow drawing and crossbow loading time.

It is designed to remain compatible with Quick Charge.

Mobility Fitting

Obtaining: Jungle Pyramid loot — approximately 30% chance

Effect: Reduces the movement penalty while preparing a bow or crossbow.

Lingering Fitting

Obtaining: Igloo loot — approximately 50% chance

Effect: Increases the duration of supported temporary arrow effects by approximately 25%.

The current system includes effects such as Darkness, Blindness, Nausea, and Fracture.

Focus Fitting

Obtaining: Pillager Outpost loot — approximately 50% chance

Effect: Provides a configurable zoom function for ranged combat.

The current implementation supports multiple zoom levels.

Vanilla-Inspired Presentation

This beta also includes several presentation improvements intended to make the new content feel consistent with Minecraft:

  • custom tooltips;
  • contextual Fletching Table slot indicators;
  • progressive Quiver and Backpack previews;
  • capacity bars inspired by Bundles;
  • organized Creative Mode placement;
  • special-arrow particle effects;
  • custom projectile textures;
  • English and Mexican Spanish localization.

Beta Notice

Version 0.1.0 is a development beta.

Several systems are already functional, but they are not necessarily in their final design.

In particular:

  • the final selection of special arrows is still being reviewed;
  • some special arrows may be redesigned, rebalanced, temporarily removed, or replaced;
  • Fitting compatibility and their overall design are still being reviewed;
  • some obtaining methods and recipes may change;
  • visual and sound polish is still ongoing.

Feedback and bug reports are welcome.
