What's new

StreamCraft 0.33.0: the StreamCraft Phone

Watch anyone's desktop from your pocket. Raise it to watch, and carry two to watch two streams at once.

New

  • StreamCraft Phone. A handheld screen you carry like any item. Hold right-click to raise it: it turns sideways in front of you and shows the stream. Let go to lower it.
  • Two phones, two streams. Hold a phone in each hand and both come up together, side by side, each showing its own stream.
  • Each phone remembers its stream. With one person sharing, a phone shows them by itself. With several, press ; (or sneak + right-click) to choose. The phone keeps that choice through hand swaps, hotbar scrolling and logging out, and its tooltip says whose stream it is. If that person stops sharing, the phone says so instead of switching to someone else.
  • Picture the moment you raise it. A phone in your hand connects in the background with the picture paused, so raising it shows the stream right away.
  • Sound while raised. The stream's desktop audio plays at your Stream Volume while the phone is up. With two phones up, you hear the one in your main hand; press F to swap.

Fixed

  • Watch your own stream on a tablet or phone. Your own desktop share is now in the list, as it already was for a Display Block. It shows by itself only when nobody else is sharing; otherwise choose it with ;, where it is marked "(you)". Watching yourself doesn't add you to your viewer list or use trial minutes.
  • Display Blocks can be picked back up. Breaking one now drops it, so you can move it without crafting a new one. It mines like iron ore and is quickest with a pickaxe, though any tool or a bare hand works. A moved block starts with default settings.

Crafting the phone

Make one on a crafting table with four iron ingots, one glass pane and one redstone dust:

  • Top row: iron ingot, glass pane, iron ingot
  • Bottom row: iron ingot, redstone dust, iron ingot

It's the tablet's recipe without the tablet's bottom row of iron, so it costs three fewer iron ingots.

In creative, it's in the Redstone Blocks tab.

Good to know

  • Server and players must update together. The phone is a new item, so a client on an older version can't join a server on 0.33.0.
  • Holding a phone counts as watching, even before you raise it: you appear in the streamer's viewer list and it uses trial minutes. A phone in your hotbar but not in your hand does nothing.
  • Phones show desktop shares, not cameras, and need the StreamCraft service on the server.
  • The streamer's microphone travels by proximity voice, so a far-away phone viewer hears the desktop audio but not the streamer talking.
  • The 0.32.0 notes said the tablet had not been tested on Mac or Linux. Since then a Linux streamer has reached a Mac tablet viewer 700 blocks away, and the latest Mac test showed the tablet and phone picture drawing correctly.
  • A locked event screen can still be destroyed by explosions such as TNT; it now drops when that happens.

What was tested

  • Automated tests on every Minecraft version line, and every Minecraft version and loader builds.
  • In game on Windows, Fabric 1.21.1, with the viewer more than 2000 blocks from two streamers: one phone, two phones showing two different streams, choosing a stream, a phone keeping its stream after logging out, a streamer stopping, the streamer's viewer list, and the Photon shader pack.
  • The two fixes, in game on Windows: watching your own stream on a tablet and on a phone, and picking it from the list, on Fabric 1.21.1, NeoForge 1.21.1, Fabric 26.2 and Forge 1.20.1. On Fabric 1.21.1, with two players 3000 blocks apart: each tablet shows the other player first, your own stream gives way when someone else starts sharing, and you never show up in your own viewer list. A phone keeps your own stream after logging out. Display Blocks drop when broken by hand or with a pickaxe on all four of those versions, and when blown up by TNT on Fabric 1.21.1. A locked event screen still can't be broken by other players.
  • The two fixes on macOS (Apple Silicon), Fabric 1.21.1, sharing the whole display: the tablet and a raised phone show your own stream, the list shows it as yours, and a Display Block broken with a pickaxe drops back into your inventory.
  • Sound, measured on Windows with a viewer 3000 blocks from the streamer: the streamer's desktop audio plays from a held tablet and from a raised phone at the same level, and stops when the phone is lowered or the tablet is put away. "Forget this stream" clears a phone's stream.
