StreamCraft 0.12.1 β€” Voice chat, native Linux, and sharper screens

A big step up from the last public release (0.9.9). The highlights: real-time voice chat, first-class native Linux capture tested on real desktops, and a wave of Display Block upgrades. This release also adds the terms and age gate required to operate a live camera/screen/voice service.

πŸŽ™οΈ Voice chat (new)

Proximity-based, in-world voice β€” talk to nearby players or just your stream's viewers, no external app.

  • Two modes: open proximity (distance-attenuated) or stream-bound (only your viewers hear you).
  • Push-to-talk, open-mic, or voice-activated, with a mic-activity indicator. Opt-in β€” press M, off by default.
  • Microphone & speaker selection, per-player volume sliders, and audio processing: echo cancellation, noise suppression, and auto-gain.
  • Tuned for real distance β€” an adaptive jitter buffer keeps long-haul (e.g. transatlantic) calls smooth while staying low-latency on LAN.
  • Ships on every Fabric band (1.20.1 through 26.1) and NeoForge.

🐧 Native Linux integration (no compromise)

StreamCraft uses first-class native capture on Linux β€” not a JavaCV fallback β€” and we test it on two different desktop stacks, on purpose:

  • Manually tested on Fedora (GNOME / Wayland) and Arch (KDE Plasma / Wayland). KDE and GNOME drive different xdg-desktop-portal backends for screen capture, so we exercise both.
  • Wayland screen-share via PipeWire + the desktop portal β€” fixed the format negotiation that produced no video on modern GNOME (GNOME 50 / Mutter 50).
  • Native webcam (V4L2) and native audio playback through PipeWire β€” received stream audio plays without needing the pipewire-alsa bridge.
  • Fixed a hard JVM crash on webcam publish on some Intel GPUs (VAAPI), caught on Arch.

πŸ–₯️ Display Blocks

  • Auto-crop black bars. Letterboxed films and pillarboxed 4:3 sources now fill the panel cleanly β€” the block adopts the content's aspect ratio, no bars, no distortion.
  • Pixel-precise positioning. Hold Shift while adjusting Distance/Horizontal to nudge by a single pixel, plus a new up/down vertical axis β€” screens sit exactly where you want them.
  • Opaque backdrop. Shared screens and webcams are no longer see-through from behind.
  • Cleaner, more compact Display Config screen.

🩹 More cross-platform fixes

  • macOS: screen shares recover automatically if the capture stalls mid-session, and the menu bar is no longer included in a shared screen.
  • Desktop/system audio now reliably reaches viewers on screen shares.

🧩 Compatibility & polish

  • Quilt Loader support for the Fabric builds.
  • Fixed the Display Block crafting recipe failing to produce on Minecraft 1.20.5–1.21.1.
  • HUD LIVE / MIC stream indicators repositioned to the top-left so they stay clear of vanilla potion icons and minimaps.
  • A β™₯ support page in the menu for backing the project.

βœ… Certified builds

We manually playtest a core set on real hardware each release. Other builds come from the same shared source and pass our automated build checks, but aren't individually playtested.

  • Certified (manually tested):
    • MC 1.20.1 β€” Fabric
    • MC 1.21.1 β€” Fabric & NeoForge
    • MC 1.21.11 β€” Fabric & NeoForge
    • MC 26.1.2 β€” Fabric
    • …across Windows, macOS (Apple Silicon), and Linux (Fedora GNOME + Arch KDE Plasma).
  • Build-verified (not individually playtested): 1.20.5, 1.21.2, 1.21.4, 1.21.6, 1.21.9 (and their NeoForge variants), plus the 26.2 snapshot build.

Terms & age gate

  • A one-time Terms of Use screen the first time you turn on camera, screen share, share-to-web, or voice β€” links to the Terms, Privacy Policy, and Acceptable Use Policy, an age selection, and an explicit "I Agree," followed by a "How It Works" walkthrough.
  • Children's-privacy protections: under-13 players can use on-device features only β€” nothing is transmitted to other people.
  • Consent is withdrawable instantly: turn a feature off and transmission stops immediately. Nothing is recorded or stored.

Notes

  • Run the same StreamCraft version on the client and the server β€” both must have the mod.
  • This is the only supported StreamCraft release; earlier versions have been retired. Update both client and server to 0.12.1.
