Cosmic Catastrophes
The sky is falling. Cinematic cosmic disasters that leave real scars on your world, and two guns that can break the sky itself.
For Minecraft 1.20.1 (Forge 47.x). Install it on both the client and the server.
⚠ Destruction is permanent. Craters, firestorms and torn-up terrain stay. Back up worlds you care about. Bright flashes, camera shake and terrain damage can all be reduced or turned off (see Config).
The disasters
Each one builds for a minute or two overhead: a warning, a slow escalation, one signature moment, then a lingering aftermath. They arrive on their own every 40–90 minutes, or an op can call one with /cosmic start.
| Disaster | What happens |
|---|---|
| Planetary Collapse | A rogue planet with clouds, oceans and an atmosphere grows from a dot until it fills half the sky. Its gravity lifts loose items and grants low gravity, and tidal forces throw chunks of ground into the air. Its atmosphere grazes ours at the horizon: a blinding flash, a shockwave that sweeps across the whole sky, towering dust, molten fissures and flattened forests. |
| Supernova | A flickering red giant boils, shrinks and detonates into a bright shell that slowly becomes a nebula with a tiny neutron star at its heart. Seconds later its radiation reaches the ground: forests burn, grass chars, snow and shallow water boil away, and sand fuses into glass. |
| Hypernova | A blue-white star crackles with plasma arcs while its core collapses and bends the light around it, then fires two relativistic jets. Gamma-ray beams lance down and sweep across the land, leaving long trenches of glass and obsidian. |
| Kilonova | Two neutron stars spiral together faster and faster, with a chime that rises in pitch every half orbit. They merge in a violet flash into a cloud that cools from blue to violet, crimson and gold. Burning chunks rain down into craters lined with gold, and a few gold nuggets fall near every player. |
| Comet Impact | A comet with a blue ion tail and a golden dust tail approaches and breaks up. Fragments hit first, then the nucleus comes down in a cyan fireball: an ice-lined crater, a shockwave that flattens forests far around it, and a dust winter. |
| Solar Superflare | The sun boils and erupts. A coronal mass ejection swells until it fills the sky, auroras ripple everywhere and real lightning walks the land. When the plasma arrives, everything under the open sky catches fire. |
The guns
Sun Annihilator
Aim at the sun in daytime (a reticle turns green when you're on target) and fire. The beam strikes the sun. It swells and erupts, then implodes into a black hole with an accretion disk and real gravitational lensing. Night falls instantly and stays. The black hole grows until it swallows the sky; the ground within 64 blocks of every player is torn apart and falls upward into it, and so do you. You wake up floating in space: no gravity, the black hole that used to be the sun, and what's left of the Earth spiralling in. Hold sneak for 3 seconds (or type /cosmic return) to warp back to the ruins.
Moon Breaker
Aim at the moon at night and fire. Glowing cracks race across it, then it shatters. Its fragments come down one by one, burning through the atmosphere and blasting craters around you, with the core landing last and hardest. Only a ring of rubble is left in the sky.
Both are permanent until an op runs /cosmic restore.
| Gun | Recipe |
|---|---|
| Sun Annihilator | nether star, 2 gold blocks, 2 blaze rods (diagonal) |
| Moon Breaker | ender eye, 2 amethyst blocks, 2 iron blocks (diagonal) |
A round sun and moon
The square vanilla sun and moon are replaced by a round, glowing sun that warms to orange at sunset and a cratered moon whose phases come from real lighting.
Built for spectacle
- Shader-rendered sky objects: planets, plasma stars, nebula shells, jets, accretion disks, auroras and dust clouds, drawn as real celestial bodies far beyond the terrain.
- Impact frames at every signature moment, timed in rendered frames: white flashes, black and colored contrast frames, and two-tone silhouette frames, each disaster with its own palette.
- Synchronized flashes, sound, camera kick, lighting and particle bursts, all driven by one timeline. The audio drops out for a beat right before each impact.
- Post-processing: bloom, shockwave refraction, gravitational lensing, heat haze and lens flares.
- Sound that comes from the direction of the event, and booms that arrive late from far-away impacts.
- You never lose control of your character: camera framing is light and optional.

Config
cosmiccatastrophes-common.toml (server)
destroyTerrain: turn all block damage on or off.destructionScale: scales craters, trenches and firestorms.entityDamage: whether impacts and fire hurt players and mobs.protectBlockEntities: chests and other storage blocks are never destroyed (on by default).blocksPerTick: lower it if the server lags during big destruction.blackHoleSwallowRadius: how much ground the black hole tears up.gunCooldownSeconds: cooldown of both guns.- Automatic disasters on/off and how often they happen; for each disaster: enabled, warning length, duration and cooldown.
cosmiccatastrophes-client.toml
- Impact frames:
FULL,REDUCED(soft fades only, for photosensitive players) orOFF. - Intensity:
SUBTLE,CINEMATIC(default) orEXTREME. - Black frames on/off, and a cap on flash brightness.
- Camera shake, cinematic camera, post effects, graphics quality (
LOW/MEDIUM/HIGH), sound volume, on-screen messages. - Impact-frame colors for every disaster.
Notes
- A resource pack that retextures the sun or moon will bring the square one back next to the round one.
- Everything happens in one dimension at a time, and only one disaster runs at once.
