What's new

SoundSystem 2.0.0

Compared with the 1.0.x releases. Minecraft 1.21.1, Fabric Loader 0.16.14+.

Before you update

SoundSystem is now two jars. Put both in mods/, on the server and on every client:

  • SoundSystem Lib 0.0.1 or newer — new, required. It is the sound engine and carries Ponder (with Flywheel and Forge Config API Port), so there is no separate Ponder to install. If you already have Ponder or Create, that is fine: the newest version is used.
  • Fabric API — no longer bundled inside the mod: install it.

Your worlds keep working. Block ids, saved data and network behaviour are unchanged, and saved consoles and DJ tables load as before. The first time the Lib starts, it takes over your sound settings from config/soundsystem.json into its own config/soundsystemlib.json.

The sound engine moved to SoundSystem Lib

  • LavaPlayer is gone. The Lib has its own SoundCloud client and its own audio decoder, with no third-party library. Links, playlists, covers and seeking work as before, with no key and no account.
  • Every player still decodes the music locally and follows the shared timeline; the server still sends no audio. Entering a track in the middle (a loop, a time jump, joining late) lands on exactly the same sample as playing it from the start.
  • The physics of sound (distance, direction, obstacles, propagation delay, reverb, bass and treble going through walls differently) moved to the Lib too, and sounds the same.
  • Tracks that cannot be played are refused with a clear message: tracks that SoundCloud only offers encrypted (DRM), tracks offered only as a short preview, and the rare stream that is not AAC.
  • The number of media players a client plays at once is now 16 by default (maxMediaVoices in config/soundsystemlib.json).

New since 1.0.x

DJ

  • Five DJ tables, from a two-deck controller to a four-deck club console. Level up by crafting the next table from the old one; the tracks and settings stay, and tables already placed in your worlds are level 1. Each level adds decks, loops, effect units, a colour effect, auto gain and a track browser. With four decks, a transition goes A, B, C, D and back to A.
  • The DJ computer shows the cover, title, artist, BPM and length of every track.
  • A track that cannot be played is marked in red with a warning icon, left out of the decks, and refused on LOAD. Click its chip to try it again.

Show

  • Two colours per group, chosen with a colour picker (square, hue bar, hex, starting pairs), for LED walls, moving heads, lasers, confetti and fireworks. Saved consoles keep their palettes.
  • Nine new LED scenes: waves, scanner, plasma, fire, spiral, stars, meter, gradient and rain. LED walls now start blank, with auto off.
  • Smoke and fire are real fluids: they swirl, rise, bend around walls, take the colour of the beams, and the fire pulls the smoke along. Set the cost with fluidQuality.
  • An OPACITY slider for the smoke, per group (a fourth channel, OPA, in PRO mode). Smoke groups also get their own FIRE switch; consoles saved before keep theirs on.
  • Every firework explosion gets a halo and lights the scene for a moment.

Look and feel

  • New models for the four speaker types (sub, top, array, stage monitor) and for the smoke machine, flame projector, confetti cannon and firework launcher.
  • Line arrays hung under a truss bend row by row, and each row is its own sound source, so the sound sweeps from top to bottom.
  • The Guide has a page for each DJ table and a scene for the five tables, in a bigger book with smaller text.
  • Beams are drawn after the clouds and the weather, so shader packs no longer paint clouds over them.

Changed or removed

  • The Aim Tool is now the only way to turn a speaker, projector or machine: it opens a popup with the horizontal and vertical angles. The R key, the axis switch, the 5° steps and the cabinet menu's angle sliders are gone.
  • Moving heads can point anywhere whatever their mounting. The console's auto mode loses PAN and TILT; PAN MAX and TILT MAX remain and move around the block's own direction.
  • The willow firework is gone (a willow in an old save becomes a burst). The smoke and flame particles are replaced by the new fluids.
  • Removed from the DJ table: stems, samples, remix, key and playlists, and the jog wheel.

Known limits

  • Only AAC is decoded (HE-AAC, MP3 and Opus are not), which covers about 95% of public tracks in a survey of 647; protected tracks cannot be played.
  • Creative mode only, as before.
  • The Lib's API is young: until its 1.0, a type may still be renamed between minor versions (this matters to mod authors only).
