Sophisticated Tom Optimization speeds up Tom's Simple Storage on large networks, especially when those networks include Sophisticated Storage.
Tom's Storage terminals normally walk every connected slot to build the item list. STO keeps a compact index of occupied stacks, skips a rebuild when contents have not changed, and looks up extract/insert by item instead of scanning the whole network. Inventory Connectors only rescan when nearby storage actually changes, with a periodic full rebuild as a fallback. Open terminals also send fewer sync packets while idle.
If Sophisticated Core is installed, STO reads Sophisticated slot trackers instead of iterating empty slots. That covers Sophisticated Storage controllers, chests, barrels, shulker boxes, and placed Sophisticated Backpacks. Sophisticated Storage and Sophisticated Backpacks are optional.
On a large empty terminal scan, indexing cut the cost like this:
| Indexing on | Indexing off | Off / on | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average, including first scan | 2.22 ms | 28.64 ms | about 13× |
| Average, excluding first scan | 0.70 ms | 26.86 ms | about 38× |
The first scan is slower on both sides (35.63 ms with indexing, 107 ms without). Steady scans while the terminal stays open are the second row: about 0.7 ms with indexing, about 27 ms without.
