What's new

Smooth Terrain 1.0.0

Changes since 1.0.0-rc.1. First release for Minecraft Java 26.3 on Fabric.

New features

  • Added independent appearance controls for rounded leaves, rounded logs, draped snow, rounded shorelines, Better Grass sides and the advanced full-block mode.
  • Leaves and logs can now be rounded independently of building materials. All leaf species follow the selected treatment, and existing block/tag exclusions take precedence.
  • Added a remappable M shortcut to open Smooth Terrain settings directly. The binding appears in Minecraft's Controls menu and is saved normally. It does not open over chat, other screens or overlays, and requires neither Mod Menu nor Fabric API.
  • Added world-space texture mapping and clipping at texture-tile boundaries to preserve pixel density on curved surfaces.

Fixes

  • Natural terrain is now the default selection. Logs, planks, wool, processed building materials and leaves keep their original models unless explicitly selected. Partial solid models, including stairs, anchor neighbouring terrain transitions.
  • Older configurations migrate once to the terrain-only default while preserving rounding, movement, custom block IDs and exclusions.
  • Fixed greenish, partially transparent terrain caused by biome RGB colours being emitted with zero alpha. Biome colours and original sprite transparency are preserved.
  • Fixed stretched textures on shortened or expanded faces with world-space mapping. Clipped geometry retains its original surface and source material.
  • Fixed gaps between rounded trunks and rounded leaves, including contacts across section boundaries. Selection outlines now use the same tree-contact anchors.
  • Snow layers now follow rounded terrain with closed edge skirts instead of remaining flat plates. Thin snow no longer forces an entire hillside to stay angular. Fixed dark snow edges caused by sampling light inside a solid neighbour.
  • Rounded shores now connect the original liquid surface to the rounded land edge with narrow strips, including corners and submerged terrain tops. Original liquid height, material and biome tint are retained; flowing boundaries keep conservative anchors.
  • Fixed missing liquid tint sources by using vanilla's untinted fallback.
  • Fixed a configuration save race that could overwrite a newer rounding value when saving blacklist changes.
  • Empty or invalid configuration modes now retain terrain-only selection. Only an explicit mode=all enables the advanced full-block mode.
  • Fixed clean QA compilation when compatibility dependencies had not yet been staged.
  • Corrected development and smoke launch arguments to include Minecraft 26.3's official -XX:StackShadowPages=32. The previously reproduced native crashes also occurred without Smooth Terrain; player launcher settings are not modified by the mod.

Performance and reliability

  • Added a direct emission path for faces contained within one texture tile. Tile crossings still require additional geometry and CPU work.
  • Snow reuses the existing terrain bake; only snow crossing a vertical section boundary requires an additional supporting halo bake.
  • Unchanged shoreline planes receive no extra connection strips, and liquid model data is captured once per bake.
  • Hardened native mesh cleanup when recording an already-created mesh fails under memory pressure. The mesh is released immediately and the original error is preserved.
  • Allocate the cleanup handle before publishing a thread-local configuration snapshot.
  • Appearance changes are captured in immutable bake snapshots, and appearance drafts are applied together with rounding and movement settings.

The historical 31.8% geometry-time reduction against 0.2.6 was already present in RC1. It is not an additional RC1-to-1.0.0 gain or an FPS claim.

Release validation

  • Clean build and geometry checks passed without additional test properties.
  • Final runtime checks passed both without optional mods and with Sodium 0.9.3-alpha.1+mc26.3.
  • Each renderer completed 36 travel/settings cycles and twelve resource reloads. Repeated world unloads reclaimed heap memory.
  • Expanded regression coverage includes tree contacts, protected buildings, biome opacity, texture clipping, snow, water/lava, configuration races and native failure cleanup.
  • Dedicated-server walking and jumping traces matched vanilla movement at 25%, 80% and 100% rounding.
  • Development QA and benchmark helpers remain excluded from the release JAR.

Notes

safeMovement=true remains the default. Rounded collisions are still experimental. Other renderer versions, shaders and arbitrary modpacks are not certified. Natural block IDs have no placement-origin tracking: stone or terracotta used in buildings may still need blacklist exclusions. Optional log smoothing also affects logs used in structures.
