Smart Mobs
Smart Mobs is an AI overhaul mod for Minecraft Forge 1.12.2.
Instead of making mobs stronger through increased health or damage, Smart Mobs focuses on making hostile mobs behave more intelligently, tactically, and cooperatively.
The goal is simple:
Make combat feel like you're fighting creatures that think, adapt, and react.
What does Smart Mobs do?
Vanilla hostile mobs usually act independently.
A zombie sees a player and walks forward.
A skeleton shoots.
A creeper explodes.
Smart Mobs changes this by introducing multiple AI systems that allow hostile mobs to analyze situations, coordinate with nearby allies, and react dynamically to the player's actions.
The result is combat that feels more alive, unpredictable, and engaging.
Combat Memory
Hostile mobs can gather information during combat.
The system tracks:
-
Hits landed
-
Dodges
-
Close-range encounters
-
Ranged encounters
-
Last known player position
-
Combat style samples
Over time, mobs build a better understanding of how the player fights.
Player Analysis
Smart Mobs evaluates the player's current situation.
Mobs can analyze:
-
Health
-
Armor
-
Shield usage
-
Weapon type
-
Bow usage
-
Food consumption
-
Potion usage
-
Mobility
-
Elevation advantage
-
Threat level
This information influences their decisions and behavior.
Combat Style Detection
The AI attempts to identify how the player prefers to fight.
Supported combat profiles include:
-
Melee
-
Ranged
-
Tank
-
Glass Cannon
-
Runner
-
Healer
-
Chaotic
Different combat styles may trigger different tactical responses.
Squad System
Nearby hostile mobs can organize into squads.
Instead of acting as isolated entities, mobs can cooperate and support each other.
Each squad can assign tactical roles such as:
-
Boss
-
Attacker
-
Flanker
-
Ranged
-
Pressure
-
Support
This creates encounters where mobs behave like a group rather than a random collection of enemies.
Tactical States
Squads dynamically change behavior depending on the battle.
Possible states include:
-
Hunting
-
Engaging
-
Pressuring
-
Defensive
-
Retreating
-
Surrounding
-
Finishing
-
Regrouping
-
Panic
These states influence how mobs position themselves and interact with the player.
Formation System
Smart Mobs includes a virtual formation system that helps prevent mobs from forming unrealistic clusters.
The AI evaluates:
-
Distance to the player
-
Distance to allies
-
Distance to squad leader
-
Cohesion
-
Isolation
-
Formation spacing
This creates more believable combat positioning.
