What's new

Sipher 0.1.0 — first beta

The first public release of Sipher: live, private captions and translation for Simple Voice Chat.

Features

  • Live captions of your voice chat, shown above your head and in a transcript box. Captions appear while you are still talking and settle into a final sentence when you pause or release push-to-talk.
  • English works out of the box, with no download and no internet connection needed.
  • Welcome screen on first start: pick your language (and download its pack right there) and choose whether to share your captions. Nothing is shared before you have chosen.
  • 15 optional language packs, installed from the in-game Languages screen: Español, Deutsch, Français, Italiano, Nederlands, Português, Polski, Русский, Norsk bokmål, Svenska, Dansk, Suomi, 中文, 日本語 and 한국어.
  • Translation for everyone. Pick the language you speak and the language you want to read. Each player only needs the pack for their own language; everyone else's captions are translated for them.
  • Minecraft names stay intact in translations (Creeper, Nether, Enderman and more).
  • Respects voice chat. With Sipher on the server, your captions reach only the players who can hear you, following Simple Voice Chat's own rules for groups (normal, open and isolated), voice range and whisper range.
  • Works client-only. On a server without Sipher, your captions stay on your own screen.
  • Settings (press O, or Mods → Sipher → Config): captions on/off, sharing, live captions, bubble size, width, background and display time, and the transcript box. The status line shows whether Sipher is hearing your microphone.
  • Menus in 16 languages: English plus every language Sipher has a pack for.
  • Copy diagnostics in the settings copies versions, settings and recent errors (no captions or player names) for bug reports.
  • For mod developers: a server-side PlayerCaptionEvent on NeoForge.EVENT_BUS for every caption a player shares.

Downloads and privacy

  • Your voice never leaves your computer. Speech recognition and translation run locally.
  • Nothing is downloaded automatically. A language pack downloads only when you click Download, after a confirmation that shows its size, source and licences.
  • Language packs contain data only: model weights, vocabularies and licence texts. All code, including native libraries, is inside this file. Packs come from the project's GitHub releases over HTTPS and are checked against SHA-256 checksums built into the mod.
  • Captions you share go to the server, which forwards them to players who can hear you. Server mods can also receive them. Turn off Share my captions to keep them on your screen.
  • No telemetry, no accounts. Downloads can be turned off with allow_downloads = false in config/sipher-client.toml.

Requirements

  • Minecraft 1.21.1 with NeoForge
  • Simple Voice Chat 2.5 or newer
  • 64-bit Windows 10/11, macOS 11+ (Intel or Apple Silicon) or Linux (x64 or ARM64)

The same file works on clients and servers. Servers never load the speech models.

Known limitations

  • This is a beta: expect rough edges, and please report problems.
  • Only players with Sipher see captions, and only players with Sipher are captioned.
  • Italian, Dutch, Portuguese, Polish and Finnish use a larger shared speech model (about 670 MB) that needs around 1 GB of extra memory while you speak one of those languages.
  • Accuracy depends on your microphone and background noise; names and slang are often misheard.
  • Language packs are 193–903 MB each.
