ShieldKey
ShieldKey is a lightweight client-side Fabric mod that adds a dedicated configurable left shift key for raising your shield. Someone did this project and stopped, and I'm starting my own project of the same thing.
Instead of relying only on Minecraft’s standard Use input, ShieldKey gives shield combat its own dedicated control so blocking feels faster and more natural.
Features
- Dedicated shield key
- Automatically lowers the shield when you attack
- Automatically raises the shield again after attacking
- Right-click can suspend and resume shield mode while the shield key remains held
- Client-side only
- Lightweight and focused on combat quality of life
How It Works
Equip a shield in your offhand and hold the ShieldKey binding to raise it.
While continuing to hold the shield key, you can attack normally. ShieldKey temporarily lowers the shield for the attack, then automatically raises it again afterward.
Right-clicking while holding the shield key suspends shield mode. Right-click again to resume blocking.
The keybind can be changed through Minecraft’s Controls menu.
Requirements
- Minecraft 26.3
- Fabric Loader
- Fabric API
Known Limitation
ShieldKey currently maintains shield use through Minecraft’s standard Use input. If you are holding a usable or placeable item in your main hand, activating the shield may also use that item.
This is an early public release, and community feedback will help guide future improvements.
