Sensoriel

NeoForge · by stevSTANY · Minecraft 1.21 → 26.3

Sensoriel turns Minecraft into a co-op challenge where every player is Blind, Deaf or Mute (and, optionally, in a Wheelchair), and the roles keep changing. Work together, use helper items and beat the Ender Dragon.

Required on both client and server. Install Simple Voice Chat for your Minecraft version for the Deaf and Mute handicaps to affect voices. Without it, the mod still runs, but proximity voice isn't affected.

The challenge

  • The roles: Blind, Deaf and Mute, plus the optional Wheelchair role. With 3 players and the three base roles, there is always one of each.
  • Choose the roles in the draw from the debug menu (at least 3). The Wheelchair role is off by default.
  • Role rotation every 15 to 25 minutes (configurable). Everyone gets a new role each time.
    • A slot-machine animation reveals your new role, and its effects only start once the animation ends.
    • The rotation timer only appears during the last 10 seconds.
  • Lobby: players wait at spawn in Adventure mode and can't take damage. The challenge starts only when an operator starts it (/start or the challenge menu).
  • Fresh start for everyone: when the challenge begins:
    • inventories, XP and effects are cleared;
    • all advancements and recipes are reset (the mod's own recipes stay unlocked);
    • everyone is healed, put in Survival and teleported together to a random spot on the map, which becomes the world spawn.
  • Challenge rules: difficulty is set to Normal, Keep Inventory and Immediate Respawn are on, and death messages are hidden.
  • Two-team mode (optional, e.g. 3 vs 3): roles rotate within each team.
  • Pause: the timer, the role rotation and the downed countdown stop, and the world is frozen.
  • HUD: shows your role, the game timer (from 3 players), and each player's role, times downed ⬇ and deaths ☠.
  • After the Ender Dragon dies, the timer freezes and nothing restarts the game.

Challenge menu

Server operators get a Sensoriel Challenge… button at the bottom of the pause menu. It opens a menu to:

  • start, pause or resume, and stop the challenge;
  • save and load the game;
  • turn two-team mode and the Wheelchair role on or off.

Stopping and loading ask for confirmation.

Handicaps

Blind

  • The world is heavily blurred. The hotbar and inventories are blurred a little less.
  • Menus are blurred too, including the pause menu.
  • Item tooltips are unreadable, or almost readable while holding the cane.
  • Sign text is hidden.
  • Can't read other players' chat messages (they're scrambled) and can't type in chat.
  • Holding the Blind Cane reduces the blur.

Deaf

  • Game sounds are muffled and quieter.
  • Other players' voices are muffled and faint. A Mute player's voice is almost inaudible.
  • Anyone talking through an active Megaphone is heard clearly.
  • Can type in chat but can't read other players' messages.

Mute

  • Your voice comes out muffled and quiet, unless your Megaphone is active.
  • Can read chat but can't type in it.

Wheelchair (optional)

  • Only drawn in games with at least 4 players (at most one wheelchair per four players).
  • You sit in a 3D wheelchair whose wheels turn as it rolls. On your own you roll very slowly, and the chair turns with where you look. Shift does nothing.
  • An ally right-clicks the chair to push it (and again to let go): the chair stays in front of them, turns with them and climbs one-block steps.
  • The Hoverboard makes the chair zoom for a few seconds.

Every player wears their handicap on their head: sunglasses, headphones or a red cross over the mouth (3D models).

Role Read players' chat Write in chat
Blind No No
Deaf No Yes
Mute Yes No

Downed & revive

  • Instead of dying, you go down: you crawl, are blinded and glowing, take no damage, and mobs lose interest in you. Fire is put out.
  • Your coordinates are announced in chat.
  • An ally revives you by holding right-click on you for 3 seconds, whatever they're holding (a raised shield or bow is lowered automatically). Two allies revive twice as fast.
  • With no help within 1 minute, you die and respawn at spawn with your items.
  • If everyone is down at once, everyone dies.

Items

All recipes are unlocked from the start. Everything is also in the Sensoriel creative tab. Items with a cooldown show it in their tooltip, along with the time left while it's recharging.

Item Recipe What it does
Blind Cane 3 iron ingots diagonally 2 attack damage, +2 block/entity reach, and a little less blur while held. Right-click for a sonar: a tick whose pitch tells the distance to the wall ahead, plus sounds for holes, lava, water and nearby monsters.
Megaphone 3 copper ingots, 1 iron ingot, 1 redstone Right-click: active for 10 s. Distorted megaphone voice with ×2.5 range, heard clearly by the Deaf, and gives the Mute their voice back. Cooldown 1 min.
Notepad 1 sign surrounded by 8 logs Write a note, or pick one of 12 quick phrases. You hold up a big 3D wooden sign with both hands for as long as you hold the notepad. Cooldown 1 min.
Throwable Relief Potion glass bottle, gunpowder, gold ingot, 2 beetroots, brown mushroom 2 min with a strongly reduced handicap (a Blind player can even read tooltips; a Wheelchair player gets up and walks, but can't sprint). In exchange you fart and burp at random (real recordings, with a little cloud). Stacks to 16.
Re-roll Potion Loot only Drinking it re-draws everyone's roles. Stacks to 16.
Leash 4 string, 2 iron ingots, 1 redstone Right-click a player to tie them to you and pull them along. Click again to untie.
Whistle 1 iron ingot, 1 gold nugget, 1 string A whistle heard up to 48 blocks away. Blind players also see a light column at the spot and a ♪ arrow around their crosshair with the distance. Cooldown 1 min.
Walkie-Talkie 1 lightning rod, 1 redstone, 5 copper ingots A wheel of 10 pre-recorded phrases ("Over here!", "Watch out!", "There's a monster!"…) played in a loud radio voice up to 32 blocks away, in each listener's language. Cooldown 1 min.
Special Magnifier Rare loot, villager trade Single use: a Blind player sees much more clearly for 10 s. Cooldown 1 min.
Hoverboard 2 logs, 1 redstone, 3 iron ingots For the Wheelchair player: a two-wheeled hoverboard attaches in front of the chair, which zooms for 5 s, faster than sprinting. Cooldown 1 min.

Guide dog: a wolf tamed by a Blind player barks when its owner gets close to lava, fire or a drop of 3 blocks or more.

Loot:

  • Relief Potions in most Nether Fortress and Bastion chests, and sometimes from Piglin bartering.
  • Re-roll Potions, rarely, in Nether Fortress, Bastion, Stronghold and Dungeon chests.
  • Special Magnifiers, rarely, in those same chests.

Handicapped mobs

30% of all mobs are born handicapped (monsters, animals, villagers… everything but bosses). The accessories are fitted to each mob's head, from chickens to Ghasts.

  • Blind (sunglasses, plus a cane if it has hands): can't see you, but hears you walking or running, even through walls. Sneak and it can't hear you at all.
  • Deaf (headphones): only follows you while it can see you. Duck behind a block and it loses you.
  • Mute (red cross): makes no sound at all.
  • Megaphone (mobs with hands): lets out a random mob cry every 10 to 60 seconds.
  • Sign (mobs with hands): holds up a sign with a funny phrase or meme.

Merchant villagers

Half of the handicapped villagers have special trades, even without a profession:

  • Mute: holds a sign ("Shh… Special offers!") and sells Notepads, Walkie-Talkies and Megaphones.
  • Blind: sells Canes, Whistles and Special Magnifiers. He also takes dirt for an emerald, because he can't see what you're giving him.
  • Deaf: sells Relief Potions, Walkie-Talkies and Re-roll Potions.

Emotes

Press B to open the emote wheel: Yes, No, Follow me, Danger, Help me, Wait, Thanks, Haha.

Your character plays a real animation (nodding, head-shaking, waving, both arms up, bowing, laughing…) and the emote shows above your head for 3 seconds.

End of the game

When the Ender Dragon dies:

  • Statistics with funny titles:
    • The Fart Master (most farts) and The Burp King (most burps);
    • The Kamikaze (most deaths) and The Doormat (most times downed);
    • The Writer (most words written);
    • The Guardian Angel (most revives);
    • The Heartless (most handicapped mobs killed).
  • Memory wall: a wall of signs is built at spawn with the best notes of the game.

Advancements (Sensoriel tab):

  • Didn't See You Coming: kill a blind zombie.
  • Guardian Angel: revive an ally.
  • Lazarus: get revived 5 times.
  • Grand Finale: fart while the Ender Dragon dies.

Save & resume

  • Save (challenge menu or /defi save) records the whole game:
    • roles, timer, deaths and stats;
    • each player's position, inventory, Ender Chest, XP, health, hunger, effects and game mode;
    • the world around players: items on the ground, mobs, XP orbs, arrows…
  • Load (challenge menu or /defi load) puts everything back exactly as it was, even after updating the mod. Anything dropped or spawned after the save disappears. Players who are offline are restored when they join.
  • Blocks are not saved: a block placed or broken after the save stays that way.

Configuration

config/sensoriel-synced.toml (26.3) or <world>/serverconfig/sensoriel-server.toml (all other versions) lets you set:

  • the rotation duration and whether its timer is shown;
  • the lobby;
  • the random teleport and its distance;
  • the chat rules;
  • the megaphone's range.

Languages

Fully playable in English and French. Everything follows each player's game language: HUD, menus, chat messages, mob and merchant signs, emotes, notepad quick phrases and the walkie-talkie voice.
