[Return by Death] by lom2333

This mod's functionality is inspired by Subaru Natsuki's "Return by Death" from "Re:Zero". Each death will revert the entire world to its previous save state.

Warning: This mod modifies the NBT data of saved worlds. Therefore, if your game contains a large number of unique custom blocks, such as those from 【Create】, unexpected issues may occur. However, there is no need to worry. This mod is already compatible with common formats; as long as the data is not completely independent of vanilla formats, this mod can restore it to its original state.

What is its purpose?

When you die, both you and the world will be restored to the last save point, and you will be afflicted with *Witch’s Lingering Scent*. *Witch’s Lingering Scent* will continue to build up and will not disappear. You cannot remove it with milk or standard commands.

While within the range of *Witch’s Lingering Scent*, monsters will notice you more easily. As the effect level increases, monsters will become stronger. Each time the world is rolled back, you will also receive the Nausea debuff. If rollbacks happen too frequently, your maximum health will be reduced by 1 point. This effect lasts for up to 10 seconds.

Stress System:

The Stress System is automatically enabled in multiplayer or on servers. It is not enabled in single-player worlds.

In this system, each player has both a Stress value and a Sanity value. When a dead player triggers Death Reversion, that player’s Stress increases by 1%.

Each player can also cast “Stress” or “Encourage” on other players.

“Stress” can be applied up to 5 times within 10 minutes. Each application increases the efficiency of the target player’s next Stress gain from Death Reversion by 50%.

When a player’s Stress value reaches its maximum, that player enters a state of Mental Breakdown. While in this state, the player becomes blind, automatically moves toward the nearest player within 24 blocks, and attempts to attack them. If the player in Mental Breakdown is killed, all debuffs on them are transferred to the player who killed them.

“Encourage” becomes less effective when repeatedly applied to the same player, with each consecutive use reducing its effectiveness by 30%, up to a maximum reduction of 100%. This penalty is cleared after 10 minutes.

If “Encourage” is cast on a player who is currently in Mental Breakdown, both players will die and trigger Death Reversion. However, the rollback caused by this trigger will remove all debuffs from both players, excluding Witch’s Lingering Scent.

Update Log:

V0.2.0:

-Fixed an issue where players holding the Witch's Fragrance failed to spawn monsters during the day.-Added the ability to trigger a save countdown by right-clicking the bed.

V0.2.1:
- Fixed an issue where, in extreme cases, triggering a save during the save process would cause the game to lag.

V0.3.0:
Added a stressed system, which will only appear in multiplayer worlds or on servers.

- Fixed some compatibility issues with Create

V0.3.1:
There are no changes to the core content; only compatibility issues related to Create that were missed are fixed.

Server status:

Server compatibility has been added. When any player dies, all other players will also be rolled back, without affecting offline players. If one of your friends leaves the world midway through and returns much later, that player will still be rolled back to their own individual last save point.

Q&A:

1. What are the save points for Return by Death?

Answer: In single-player mode, the game will automatically save once after you enter the world for the first time. After that, each time Return by Death is triggered, a random countdown of 30–60 seconds will be generated. Once the countdown ends, the save point will be refreshed. This countdown is silent and will not display any notification.
Afterward, you can actively trigger a save countdown by right-clicking a bed, which will generate a random countdown of 10–15 seconds.
In multiplayer or on a server, the countdown is also triggered through Return by Death, but its duration will be shortened. When a player actively clicks a bed without completing the sleep event, it will not generate a world save countdown. Instead, it will generate a player data save countdown. The next time Return by Death is triggered, the player’s data will be restored to the state it was in at that time.
When all players complete the sleep event, both player data and the world will be saved.

2. What does “Witch’s Scent” do?

Answer: It is a debuff that accumulates after subsequent Return by Death triggers. When a player has Witch’s Scent, hostile mobs are allowed to spawn within 50 blocks of the player and will not burn in sunlight.
At night, the spawn rate of mobs is doubled, and the multiplier increases with the number of stacks. The higher the stack count of Witch’s Scent, the stronger the mobs become. In addition, mobs will be able to detect you from farther away and attempt to attack you. This effect becomes stronger as the stack count of Witch’s Scent increases.
