Description

ReTerraForged: From the Ashes

Realistic TerraForged world generation for Minecraft 1.21.1 – 26.3 · NeoForge & Fabric

A river in the desert between red badlands

TerraForged turned Minecraft worlds into real landscapes: continents, mountain chains, eroded slopes and rivers that run all the way to the sea. ReTerraForged carried it to 1.20.1, and then development stopped: later ports were abandoned, changed the generation and could not even create a new world.

From the Ashes brings it back. The generation of the original ReTerraForged 0.0.6, compared class by class with its source, with its bugs fixed, on every Minecraft version from 1.21.1 to 26.3.

🆕 What's new in 0.0.16

  • Distant Horizons SeedGen: no more log flood and slow world creation. SeedGen places the features of the preset's biomes into chunks that keep no post-processing marks, and Minecraft logged a warning for every such block: over a million lines a minute, with seconds of the world creation spent on writing them. With SeedGen installed these warnings are now left out. Without SeedGen nothing changes.
  • 26.3, NeoForge 26.3.0.89 and newer: "Done" on the preset screen works again (NeoForge removed a method the preset export used).

0.0.15: Biomes O' Plenty compatibility

  • Biome mods that use TerraBlender (Biomes O' Plenty and others) now get all of their biomes. Before, about a third of BoP's overworld biomes never generated (woodland, grassland, orchard, pasture, tundra and more). Now 50 of 59 BoP biomes generate on 26.3, against 53 in a vanilla world with the same seed.
  • Chunks get the biomes that /locate, structures and the spawn expect (26.3): with BoP, 288 of 289 tested places now match, and BoP's own surfaces (sand, mud, volcanic rock) appear where they should.
  • Worlds without biome mods generate exactly as in 0.0.14.

🛠️ Installation

Singleplayer

  1. Put the jar into your mods folder.
  2. Create a new world: World tab → Customize → pick a preset → Done.
  3. The "experimental settings" warning is expected: press Proceed.

⚠️ Without step 2 the world is generated as vanilla.

Server

  1. Put the jar into the server's mods folder.
  2. Download the preset datapack reterraforged-preset-<version>.zip from the GitHub releases (or export your own with Export As Datapack on the preset screen).
  3. Put it into world/datapacks/ before the first start of a new world.

The mod affects only new worlds created with its preset; existing worlds are not changed.

🤝 Compatibility

Tested together, no issues found on ReTerraForged's side

Each set was run on a real NeoForge server with the mod's 18-point self test, the structure check (every structure found near the spawn is built and checked for floating or buried parts) and the same mods in a vanilla world with the same seed for comparison.

  • Biomes O' Plenty with TerraBlender (26.3): its biomes generate almost as in a vanilla world (50 of 59 BoP biomes on 26.3 against 53 with the same seed); on 26.3 install TerraBlender yourself, BoP's Modrinth page does not list it.
  • Waystones, Lithostitched, Dungeons and Taverns, Towns and Towers (26.3): their structures stand on the terrain as in a vanilla world.
  • YUNG's Better Dungeons, Mineshafts, Strongholds, Desert Temples, Ocean Monuments, Jungle Temples, Witch Huts, Nether Fortresses, End Island, YUNG's Bridges, Extras and Cave Biomes (26.1.2, the newest version they support).
  • Cobblemon (1.21.1, the newest version it supports).
  • Distant Horizons, Iris and Sodium: the screenshots above were taken with them.

Works, but not recommended together

  • Distant Horizons SeedGen: works (no log flood since 0.0.16), but it guesses distant terrain from the seed instead of generating it, so distant mountains may not match the real ones. Distant Horizons alone shows them as ReTerraForged generates them.
  • Terralith: both mods generate the terrain. With a ReTerraForged preset the terrain is ReTerraForged's, only part of Terralith's biomes appear and forests grow Terralith's trees instead of ReTerraForged's. Nothing crashes, but pick one of the two.

Other

  • Other TerraBlender biome mods: their biome regions follow the ReTerraForged map.
  • Cave biome mods: use the cave compatibility mode on the Caves page.

🔧 What this fork fixes

  • The generation of 0.0.6 is back. The 1.21.1 port this fork started from had changed "Default", mountain climate, rivers, lakes, wetlands, structures on mountains and more.
  • New worlds could not be created: a mixin error crashed generation.
  • Missing trees: on NeoForge the trees and other features did not appear; on 26.x the mod's trees did not grow.
  • Freezes: Fabric froze in the Nether, the End and on new chunks; /locate, explorer maps and dolphins froze the server for minutes.
  • Memory leak: the generator's caches were never freed until the game was closed.
  • Preset screen: sliders did nothing on 1.21.11+, the screen crashed on 1.21.6+, edits were lost; broken preset files no longer crash the game.

✅ Tested

Every version is tested on real NeoForge and Fabric servers: an 18-point self test (terrain, sea, spawn on dry land, the mod's trees, bee nests, bedrock, the Nether and the End, the structure page), every vanilla structure near the spawn, a biome mod test with Biomes O' Plenty, mouse-driven tests of the preset screen and a stress test of every setting at its extremes.
