Rem’s AI Companion
Bring AI conversations directly into Minecraft.
Press R to open a dedicated chat menu, ask a question, get help with your Minecraft adventures, or simply spend some time chatting with Rem—all without switching to a browser.
Rem’s AI Companion combines streaming AI chat with original artwork, expressive portraits, and voice reactions. Use the included Rem personality or create your own system prompts to change how your companion responds.
This is a client-side chat companion. Rem appears inside the menu; the mod does not add an entity to your world.
Features
AI chat inside Minecraft
- Read responses as they stream into the conversation.
- Write multiline messages with Shift+Enter.
- Stop a response while it is generating.
- Read formatted messages with Markdown and code blocks.
- Copy messages and code for use elsewhere.
- Regenerate the latest answer up to three times and switch between its saved alternatives.
Choose your own provider
Create API profiles using the built-in presets:
- Google Gemini
- DeepSeek
- xAI Grok
- ChatGPT / Custom OpenAI-compatible endpoints
- Kimi
- OpenRouter
- Vercel AI Gateway
Each profile can have its own API key, model ID, and endpoint. Where supported, you can retrieve available models from the provider instead of entering the model ID manually.
Compatibility depends on the selected endpoint, model, and provider capabilities. An OpenAI-compatible endpoint must support the request and streaming formats used by the mod.
Optional web search
Enable web search on supported connections to let the selected model use online information.
Search integration is available for supported Gemini, Grok, OpenRouter, and Vercel configurations. Availability depends on the provider, selected model, and account permissions.
Search is off by default and may incur additional provider charges.
Keep your conversations organized
- Create and reopen multiple conversations.
- Search your chat list.
- Rename, pin, and delete conversations through Chat settings.
- Assign a different API profile and system prompt to each conversation.
- Keep chat history and drafts locally as JSON.
- Automatically name new conversations from the first AI response unless you choose a name yourself.
Each conversation has a 100-message limit.
Customize your companion
The included Default system prompt gives your companion Rem’s personality.
You can also create your own prompts and configure character name, age, player name, response language, and additional personality preferences. Custom prompts let you use the chat for different personalities or practical assistance.
The mod appends basic game context to each request, including your dimension, coordinates, Minecraft version, and mod loader.
Original artwork and voice reactions
Rem’s portraits change with conversation activity, including idle, typing, thinking, sleeping, and affectionate states.
English and Japanese voice reactions accompany selected interactions. These are short prerecorded reactions, not text-to-speech readings of AI responses.
Use Settings → Voice to enable or disable reactions, change their volume, select a language, or play a sample.
Manage conversation context
Open Settings → AI Performance to choose how much conversation text can be included in requests:
| Preset |
Conversation character budget |
| Economic — default |
16,000 |
| Stable |
24,000 |
| Extended |
32,000 |
| Ultra |
64,000 |
These are character budgets, not token limits. The system prompt has a separate limit, and the selected model’s own limits still apply.
For longer conversations, open Chat settings → Summary to generate a summary manually. The saved summary replaces the summarized portion in future requests while older messages remain in your local history.
Summarization sends a separate request to your selected provider and may incur charges.
Statistics and recovery
View provider-reported token usage and costs in Settings → Statistics, including recent periods and an all-time total.
Cost information is shown only when reported by the provider. Missing cost information does not mean a request was free.
Local backup and recovery support helps restore supported JSON files if a main file becomes unreadable.
Installation
- Install Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge for your chosen Minecraft version.
- Download the matching Rem’s AI Companion JAR.
- Put it in that Minecraft installation’s
mods folder.
- Fabric users: also install Fabric API for the same Minecraft version.
- Launch Minecraft and enter a world or server.
Install only one Rem’s AI Companion JAR per Minecraft installation. Forge and NeoForge builds do not require Fabric API.
The mod runs on your client. Servers and other players do not need to install it.
First-time setup
- Press R to open the companion menu.
- Open API settings.
- Add a profile and choose your provider.
- Enter your API key and model ID. For a custom endpoint, also configure its API base URL.
- Select Save & use.
- Return to the conversation, type a message, and press Enter or click Send.
The mod uses your provider’s API. A website subscription or chat account does not necessarily include API access or API credit.

Your data and API usage
Settings, API profiles, and conversations are stored locally under:
config/rems_ai_companion/
API keys are stored as plain text. Keep this folder private and do not include it when sharing your installation or reporting a bug.
When you send a request, the mod sends the relevant conversation context, selected system prompt, and appended game information to your configured endpoint. Your selected provider’s data policies and billing apply.
The appended server field uses recognized server names where supported and otherwise hides the server address. Your coordinates and dimension are included in game context.
The mod does not run an AI model locally or provide an API subscription. An internet connection and access to a compatible API are required.
Troubleshooting
- The menu does not open: check for an R key conflict in Minecraft’s controls.
- Authentication error: check your API key and API account access.
- Insufficient credit or quota: check your provider’s billing and usage limits.
- Model not found: verify the model ID and your account’s access to it.
- Search or tool error: disable web search or choose a model that supports it.
- Context limit error: select a smaller context budget, summarize the conversation, or start a new chat.
When reporting a bug, include your Minecraft version, loader version, mod version, and relevant error details. Remove API keys and private conversation content before sharing logs or configuration files.
