Remnant Bosses 2.7: Boss Hunts

Soulslike boss fights for Minecraft

Build an Ancient Altar, lay four offerings on its pedestals and call a boss down. Remnant Bosses adds four animated, two-phase bosses, a bestiary of bone-and-soul monsters, themed boss bars and a personal Boss Hunts journal that records every hunt. Every boss, ritual and monster is tunable through JAuml config files.

2.7.0 "Boss Hunts" is available for Fabric and Forge on 1.20.1 and Fabric and NeoForge on 1.21.1.

The Four Bosses

Each boss has its own boss bar, GeckoLib animations, a full moveset with readable windups and a second phase that changes the fight. All four have spawn eggs in the Remnant Bosses creative tab.

Ossukage, the Oni Shogun

Ossukage rises from a rune circle and cannot be hurt until the rite completes.

  • A three-strike sword chain up close, and kunai thrown when you keep your distance.
  • At half health it transforms: five skeletons join the fight, and it gains Absorption, speed and damage.
  • In phase two it dashes at you, sometimes followed by an explosion, Darkness or more skeletons.
  • Its own fight theme plays while you are within 64 blocks.
  • Defeat it for the Ossukage Blade, a fire-resistant katana that throws a kunai on right-click.

Kotsukage, the Bone Sovereign

Kotsukage fights with claws, stomps, poison and bone.

  • Left and right claw swipes up close, and stomps that hit everything within 5 blocks.
  • Poison breath across a cone in front of it.
  • A roar that hits a 14-block area, raises bone traps under nearby players and calls skeleton minions.
  • Below 45% health it roars again, moves faster, hits harder and adds a trap and a minion to every roar.

Umbrakar, the Riftmaw Colossus

Umbrakar is a crowned rift beast built from 218 cubes, with ten authored animations.

  • Bite, front slam, and a tail slam for anyone standing behind it.
  • Rift Claw: five eruptions march up to 15 blocks forward along a committed lane.
  • Roar: a shockwave that expands across a 16-block arena and hits each victim once.
  • A homing orb cast from its tail.
  • Windup markers lock to the ground when an attack starts, so stepping out of them works.

Hollow Sovereign

The Hollow Sovereign is a bone monarch with a floating crown and a soul core.

  • Awakening: four rotating soul halos and a six-block soul seal.
  • Twin Reaping claw arcs and Grave Tide, an expanding double shockwave.
  • Hollow Judgment: a core beam along a fixed aim line. Solid blocks stop it.
  • Crown's Edict marks where you stood, then erupts. Move outside the seal.
  • At 45% health the Unbound Crown phase adds 30% damage, 20% pursuit speed and wider eruptions.

The Ancient Altar

Raise the rite

  1. Craft one Ancient Altar (3 Chiseled Deepslate, a Diamond, 2 Emeralds) and four Ancient Pedestals (an Emerald and 4 Chiseled Deepslate).
  2. Place the pedestals 3 blocks east, west, south and north of the altar, and put each offering on top of its pedestal.
  3. Right-click the altar with the activation item in your main hand.
Boss Activation item East West South North
Ossukage Nether Star Skeleton Skull Skeleton Skull Skeleton Skull Skeleton Skull
Kotsukage Wither Skeleton Skull Bone Block Soul Sand Soul Soil Nether Wart Block
Umbrakar Echo Shard Amethyst Block Crying Obsidian End Stone Sculk
Hollow Sovereign Heart of the Sea Bone Block Bone Block Skeleton Skull Skeleton Skull

For Ossukage, Kotsukage and Umbrakar, lightning strikes each offering and the boss arrives about four seconds later. Ossukage's rite turns the sky to dawn, and Kotsukage's and Umbrakar's to midnight. The Hollow Sovereign rises at once, and its ritual refuses to start on Peaceful, without clear space, or with another Sovereign within 64 blocks. The activation item is kept in Creative.

Boss Hunts

A journal of your hunts

  • Craft the Boss Hunts Journal from a Book, a Bone and an Ink Sac, or sneak and use an Ancient Altar with an empty main hand.
  • Every boss starts Undiscovered, with a short ritual clue.
  • Witness a boss within 48 blocks, with line of sight, and its entry becomes Encountered. It then shows the server's real activation item and the offering for each pedestal.
  • Defeat it and the entry is marked Defeated.
  • Progress belongs to your player in that world. Losing or trading the journal changes nothing.

Credit where it is due

Fair multiplayer credit. The final hit and every player who really damaged the boss in the last 60 seconds, within 64 blocks, get the defeat. Arrows count for their shooter and pets for their owner. Spectators, bystanders and hits that were cancelled or fully absorbed do not count. A defeat is recorded only after Minecraft accepts the boss's death. Cancelled deaths award nothing, and repeated kills never count twice.

Bars & Music

Bars worth fighting under

  • Each boss has its own pixel-art bar: crimson for Ossukage, gold and bone for Kotsukage, a violet rift eye for Umbrakar and a green crowned skull for the Hollow Sovereign.
  • Bars fill from the server's boss progress. Vanilla and other mods' bars keep the vanilla look.
  • Ossukage and Kotsukage bring their own fight theme within 64 blocks.
  • vfx_density scales the Hollow Sovereign's and the new monsters' particles from 0 to 1 on each client, without changing damage.

The Bestiary

Remnants in the dark

  • Grave Skitter: a six-legged bone crawler that winds up and pounces.
  • Sickleghast: a reverse-jointed ghoul with paired scythe forearms and a wide frontal cleave.
  • Dirge Lantern: a flying ribcage that marks the ground, then bursts after a dodgeable windup.
  • Skeleton Warriors and Skeleton Archers with their own animations, and skeleton minions that poison, leap and plant bone traps.
  • Rats, Wraiths and Armored Grubs.

The Grave Skitter, Sickleghast and Dirge Lantern come from spawn eggs and /summon. They do not spawn naturally yet.

Configuration

Every number is yours

JAuml generates the configuration on first launch under config/remnant/. Existing values are kept when new defaults are added.

  • bosses/<boss>.json: health, damage, armor, speed, phase threshold and each attack's damage and range.
  • bosses/<boss>_summon.json: the activation item and the four offerings. Change a ritual without touching the mod.
  • monsters/ and balance/: health, damage and more for the bestiary, skeletons, minions, rats and wraiths.
  • items/ossukage_sword.json: the Ossukage Blade's kunai.
  • client/presentation.json: custom_boss_bars and vfx_density.

Everything Else

  • Entity IDs for commands and datapacks: remnants:ossukage, remnants:kotsukage, remnants:umbrakar and remnants:hollow_sovereign. Every creature uses the remnants: namespace, and older remnant_bosses:* IDs are aliased.
  • Spawn eggs for every boss and monster in the Remnant Bosses creative tab.
  • Saves are safe: every boss keeps its phase through a save and reload.
  • Narration and keyboard support in the journal, which adapts to every GUI scale and wraps long translated text.

Questions

Do the bosses spawn in the world? No. The four bosses are altar bosses. They appear through the Ancient Altar ritual or their spawn eggs.

Can I change what a ritual needs? Yes. Edit config/remnant/bosses/<boss>_summon.json and restart. The journal always shows the values the server is actually using, so players see your changes.

Who gets credit in multiplayer? The final hit and everyone whose damage really landed in the last 60 seconds, while within 64 blocks. Nobody else, not the whole team and not the whole server.

I use another boss bar mod. Will they clash? Mods that replace the whole boss overlay may conflict. Set custom_boss_bars to 0 in config/remnant/client/presentation.json to use the vanilla bars.

Can I turn down the effects or the music? Set vfx_density between 0 and 1 on each client. Set boss_music_enabled to 0 in the Ossukage or Kotsukage config to silence its theme.
