ReFine — 1.1.0 Rendering and Performance Update

A major update focused on Vulkan rendering, frame pacing, image reconstruction, distant terrain and performance diagnostics.

VULKAN RENDERING

  • Vulkan-based rendering backend for Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge.
  • Configurable terrain and entity culling, indirect drawing and render-layer settings.
  • Anisotropic filtering for clearer textures at shallow viewing angles.
  • Configurable smooth lighting, including experimental sub-block shading.

UPSCALING AND IMAGE QUALITY

  • Adjustable world render scale while menus and the HUD remain at native resolution.
  • AMD FSR 1 EASU spatial upscaling.
  • Temporal upscaling and anti-aliasing through TAAU.
  • FXAA as an alternative when temporal upscaling is disabled.
  • RCAS contrast-adaptive sharpening.
  • Dynamic resolution driven by measured GPU frame time.

FRAME GENERATION AND LATENCY

  • Optional generation of an intermediate frame between rendered frames.
  • Separate reporting of rendered and displayed FPS.
  • Low-latency mode that limits GPU frame queuing.
  • Frame-generation controls integrated with the rendering settings.

Generated frames improve displayed motion smoothness; they do not increase simulation speed. Frame generation can introduce visual artifacts and additional latency.

HORIZON: DISTANT TERRAIN

  • Simplified terrain rendering beyond the normal chunk distance.
  • Configurable range from 32 to 512 chunks, with multiple detail levels.
  • Progressive preparation and cached terrain data.
  • Single-player terrain approximation using the world generator.
  • Multiplayer distant terrain reconstructed from previously visited chunks.

Horizon approximates the landscape surface. It does not reproduce caves, individual objects or full distant structures.

FRAME PACING AND ENGINE WORK

  • Frame-budgeted chunk mesh uploads.
  • Budgeted client light updates to reduce concentrated update work.
  • A precision frame limiter with adaptive timing.
  • Background frame limiting while the window is inactive.
  • Engine optimizations covering entity lookups, section scans, random generation and hopper queries.
  • Automatic disabling of overlapping engine optimizations when selected optimization mods are detected.

PRESETS AND ADAPTIVE SETTINGS

  • Low, Medium, High and Smart presets.
  • Smart settings consider available hardware and react to sustained performance pressure.
  • Presets cover rendering quality, resolution and Horizon settings.
  • Categorized settings with descriptions, Apply and Undo controls, and independent menu scaling.

PERFORMANCE TOOLS

  • Lens HUD with FPS, 1% lows, frame-time history and update queues.
  • Compact FPS counter with frame-generation reporting.
  • Built-in benchmark comparing current settings with all four presets.
  • Quick and precise measurement modes.
  • Results include average FPS, low-percentile FPS, frame times, GPU time and stutter counts.
  • Benchmark reports and restoration of previous settings after completion or cancellation.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1.
  • Minecraft Forge 47.x.
  • Java 17.
  • Vulkan-capable graphics hardware and drivers.
  • Client-side installation; no server installation is required.

Performance depends on hardware, settings, world complexity and installed mods. This release does not imply complete OptiFine feature or shader-pack compatibility.
