Description
Reel to Fish
Fishing the way it really works. Reel to Fish turns Minecraft's simple fishing into a real angling hobby. You choose the right rod, tie on the right bait, find the right water at the right time of day and wait for the bite. Every fish you land is unique: it has its own length and weight, it goes straight into your hand, and you can keep it, cook it or release it into any pond or aquarium, where it swims around at its true size.
From a tiny gudgeon in a village stream to a 6-metre great white in the deep ocean, there is always a bigger fish to chase.

14 craftable baits
No bait, no cast. Hold the rod in your main hand and the bait in your off hand, then sneak and right-click to attach it.
- Natural baits are used up on every catch: dough, sweetcorn, maggots, earthworm, boilie, bait fish, lugworm.
- Artificial lures stay on the rod but can snap off now and then: soft plastic shad, wobbler, crankbait, spinner, pirk, herring rig, trolling squid.
Every rod and bait combination has its own catch table. A boilie on a ledger rod brings big carp, a wobbler on a spinning rod brings pike, and a worm on the bottom at night brings eels.
Every fish is unique
- Each catch gets a real length and weight based on real growth data for its species.
- The bigger, the rarer: about half of all fish are small, and only around 1 in 100 reaches the top of its size range.
- Fish render at true scale in the world (1 block = 1 metre).
Catch and release
- A landed fish goes straight into your hand.
- Right-click any water to release it alive: ponds, rivers or your own aquarium.
- Pick released fish up again with an empty hand. Sneak + right-click shows their stats.
- Kill a fish and it shows its length and weight and drops itself with those stats.
- Wild fish swim in rivers, lakes, swamps and oceans, matched to the biome.
- Cook your catch in a furnace, smoker or on a campfire.
Rod pod with bite alarm
Place a rod pod facing the water and put a baited ledger or sea rod in it. When a fish takes the bait, the electronic bite alarm beeps, lights up red and gives off a redstone signal. You have 5 seconds to strike, or the fish is gone.
Crab pot and landing net
- Crab pot: place it under water and fill it with natural bait. Every 1 to 3 minutes it may catch crayfish, crabs, lobsters or shrimp, up to 6 at a time.
- Landing net: scoop up jellyfish, shrimp, crabs and fish up to 40 cm straight from the water.
- Careful: the lion's mane jellyfish stings when you touch it.
Personal bests
Your heaviest fish of every species is saved, even through death. A new record plays a sound and shows a trophy message. Type /pb to see all your records.
40 species
Every species has its own hand-made pixel-art model with an animated tail.

Where and when
Which fish bites depends on where you are and what time it is. Fishing works in the Overworld only.
- Water type: river, lake/pond, swamp or sea.
- Climate: cold, mild or warm biomes. Wels catfish only live in warm waters, trout need cold rivers, and tench love swamps.
- The north: salmon, Arctic char, grayling, whitefish and burbot only appear in taiga and cold biomes.
- Deep ocean: tuna and swordfish hunt in warm deep water, halibut in cold deep water.
- Time of day: dawn, day, dusk and night all matter. Zander bite best at sunset and at night, eels and catfish come out after dark.
Getting started
- Craft a rod and some bait. All items are in the Reel to Fish creative tab, and every recipe uses vanilla materials.
- Attach the bait: rod in your main hand, bait in your off hand, sneak + right-click.
- Find the right water for the fish you want and cast.
- Land it, check its length and weight, and decide: keep it, cook it or let it go.
