Recipe Hunt
Recipes are no longer free. Go out and find them.
Recipe Hunt turns crafting recipes into something you collect. Instead of knowing every recipe from the start, you unlock them by finding Recipe Scrolls and Recipe Books in chests, from mobs, in structures and from villagers. The Recipe Encyclopedia lists every recipe in the game, including the ones you have not unlocked yet, and tells you where to look for them.

How it works
- You can only craft recipes you have unlocked. This applies to the crafting table and the stonecutter.
- Vanilla's automatic recipe unlocking is disabled. Picking up an item no longer unlocks its recipes.
- New players receive a Beginner Recipe Book on first join, which unlocks the basics: crafting table, wooden tools, sticks, furnace, torch, chest and planks.
- Stonecutter recipes unlock automatically once you know the crafting recipes that lead to the same result.
- Furnace, blast furnace and smoker recipes, brewing, smithing upgrades, armor trims and special recipes such as tipped arrows are not locked.

Items
| Item | What it does |
|---|---|
| Recipe Scroll | Unlocks one recipe. Most are unidentified until you use them. Identified scrolls show the recipe name and can be given to other players. |
| Recipe Books | Unlock a set of recipes at once. Includes the Beginner and Practical Recipe Books, the Wandering Trader's Secret Recipe Book, and a book for each vanilla villager profession. |
| Secret Tome | Lets you pick one locked normal recipe and unlock it immediately. |
| Recipe Encyclopedia | A collection book with search and filters. Shows every recipe, your completion rate and how each recipe is obtained. Ingredients of locked recipes stay hidden. |
| Aged Parchment | Currency for the Recipe Collector. Earned by selling duplicate scrolls and books. |
Where to find recipes
Normal recipes
- Chests: Any chest in the world can contain unidentified scrolls, including chests added by other mods.
- Recipe Collector: Sells random scrolls for Aged Parchment.
- Villagers: Every vanilla profession sells its own Recipe Book at master level.
- Wandering Trader: Rarely sells the Wandering Trader's Secret Recipe Book.

Special recipes
Some recipes can only be earned through a specific adventure. They never appear in ordinary loot.
| Type | Examples |
|---|---|
| Mob kill | Wither → Beacon, Warden → Calibrated Sculk Sensor, Elder Guardian → Conduit, Creeper → TNT, Blaze → Blaze Powder |
| Structure | Chests in Villages, Mineshafts, Igloos, Ancient Cities, Bastion Remnants and End Cities contain themed scrolls |
| Advancement | "Free the End" → End Crystal, "Hero of the Village" → Netherite Ingot |
Bosses always drop their recipe, and every player who damaged the boss receives it.
Some building block recipes are also easier to find in related places: blackstone and basalt in Bastion Remnants, nether bricks in Nether Fortresses, prismarine in Ocean Ruins, end stone bricks and purpur in End Cities, and nether quartz blocks from piglin bartering.
Recipe Collector and Scribing Desk
The Recipe Collector is a new villager profession. Its workstation is the Scribing Desk.
| Level | Trade |
|---|---|
| 1 | Sell duplicate Recipe Scrolls for Aged Parchment |
| 2 | Sell a duplicate Recipe Book for Aged Parchment |
| 3 | Buy a random Recipe Scroll |
| 4 | Buy another random Recipe Scroll, buy the Recipe Encyclopedia |
| 5 | Buy another random Recipe Scroll, buy the Practical Recipe Book or Secret Tome (once per day) |
Scroll offers change every day.
You can also use the Scribing Desk yourself to copy a recipe you already know. Put Aged Parchment in the left slot and the item whose recipe you want in the right slot to get an identified scroll, which you can hand to a friend. Special recipes cannot be copied.
Mod compatibility
- Crafting table and stonecutter recipes from other mods work out of the box. They are treated as normal recipes and appear in scrolls, trades and the encyclopedia.
- When many mods add recipes, chests contain more scrolls so that individual recipes do not become too rare.
- Mods that unlock every recipe automatically (for example Quark's "Automatic Recipe Unlock") are blocked from doing so. If you want a mod to be able to unlock recipes, such as a quest mod, add its mod ID to
allowed_modsin the config.
Configuration and data packs
config/recipe_hunt-common.toml lets you adjust scroll chances and counts, mob drop rates, Recipe Collector prices, the Scribing Desk copy cost and whether the Beginner Recipe Book is given.
For modpack makers, how each recipe is obtained, the contents of each Recipe Book and the loot settings are all defined in JSON and can be changed with a normal data pack. Invalid entries are reported in the server log instead of crashing the game.
Requirements
- Minecraft 1.20.1
- Forge 47.4 or newer
- Must be installed on both the server and the client
Notes
- The
doLimitedCraftinggame rule is forced on while this mod is installed. - Recipes that were already unlocked in an existing world stay unlocked.
