Pure Metal [Mac]

Native Apple Metal renderer for Minecraft Java on Apple Silicon Macs: higher FPS and steadier frame times than OpenGL, works with Sodium and other mods, with optional render scaling and MetalFX.

What's new

Pure Metal 0.3.2 AND 0.3.1

A stability and compatibility update. No new settings, nothing to set up.

Fixes

  • The Terrain LOD and Upscaler buttons in Video Settings showed raw text like "puremetal.options.terrainLod" when Fabric API was not installed. They now show their proper names.
  • Resizing the window, switching fullscreen or toggling VSync no longer makes the game wait for the screen to catch up.
  • Safer quitting: the window is now closed before the GPU device is released.
  • Fixed a rare case where a new frame could be drawn into an image that was still on screen, which could show up as a flicker or a torn frame.
  • If MetalFX runs out of memory, Pure Metal now falls back to plain upscaling and tries MetalFX again when the window size or settings change, instead of switching it off until you restart. It also no longer retries every frame while memory is short.
  • Your Pure Metal settings are no longer lost if the settings file can't be read, and saving can no longer leave a half-written file.
  • Removed a harmless but alarming startup error in the log about a missing Sodium shader.
  • Extra safety checks against crashes in rare GPU buffer and texture cases.

Compatibility

  • Tested on Sodium 0.9.2, Sodium 0.9.3-beta.1 and without Sodium.
  • Tested alongside Lithium, FerriteCore, ImmediatelyFast, C2ME, EntityCulling, Sodium Extra and Dynamic FPS in a 111-mod pack.
  • The Pure Metal note in Sodium's video settings now only appears on the Sodium versions it was checked against (0.9.2 and 0.9.3). On other versions the note is skipped instead of risking a crash. Everything else still works.
  • Tested on an Apple M2. Other Macs should work but were not tested for this release.
  • Iris and other shader mods are still not supported.

Pure Metal 0.3.1

A performance update. Nothing to set up, it just runs faster.

Performance

  • About 12% faster in our test (Apple M2, 3420x2148, Sodium, 100% render scale): median frame time went from 8.39 ms to 7.38 ms, and GPU time per frame is about 12% lower. These are single runs, so your numbers will vary.
  • GPU memory traffic per frame dropped from 200 MB to 81 MB in the same test.
  • Skips redundant depth clears (about 5% faster).
  • The finished frame is shown directly instead of going through an extra copy (about 10% faster). This now works at any render scale, not just 100%.
  • Terrain skips extra smoothing work where it has no visible effect (about 3% faster, identical image). This also works when the experimental LOD textures are turned off.

Compatibility

  • The Pure Metal note under its title in Sodium's video settings shows again on Sodium 0.9.2 and 0.9.3 (tested on 0.9.3-beta.1).
  • Iris and other shader mods are still not supported.

Fixes

  • Fixed a small memory leak when a shader failed to compile (only seen in debug and benchmark builds).

Under the hood

  • Removed unused code and tidied the build.

Everything from 0.3.0 is included.

Everything from 0.3.1 is included.
