Powered Mobs v2.5 — Difficulty & Dynamic Scaling Overhaul
This update is a major balance pass over v2.2.
After live testing, v2.2 proved to be too forgiving in heavily modded environments. High-armor builds could largely ignore normal hostile mobs, naturally dangerous enemies such as Warden-level threats became little more than high-HP targets, and Apotheosis/Hellmarked enemies lost much of the danger they were supposed to provide.
At the same time, simply increasing all mob damage would have recreated the opposite problem: unfair one-shots against newer players.
Versions 2.3 through 2.5 rebuild those systems around actual combat performance instead.
v2.3 — Threat & Lethality Rework
Why This Was Changed
In v2.2, the Intrinsic Threat system was too conservative.
Enemies with naturally high base damage were heavily protected from additional scaling. This prevented extreme one-shots, but it also meant powerful armor could reduce enemies such as Warden-level mobs, Apotheosis bosses, and other modded threats to negligible damage.
They often became:
normal mobs with more health.
This was not the intended behavior.
Dynamic Threat Classes
Hostile attacks are now classified dynamically as:

Low Threat
-
Medium Threat
-
High Threat
-
Extreme Threat
This is based on actual attack characteristics rather than mob IDs.
The Warden is only a reference example. The same system automatically applies to unknown modded enemies.
Final-Damage Feedback
Powered Mobs now considers not only how much damage an enemy originally deals, but also:
how much damage it is actually managing to deal through the player's current defenses.
If an Extreme Threat enemy starts dealing trivial damage because of a powerful armor setup, Powered Mobs gradually increases its pre-mitigation damage.
If it is already removing a dangerous percentage of the player's health, scaling stops increasing aggressively.
This allows powerful enemies to preserve their identity without blindly multiplying already-lethal attacks.
Threat Targets
Different threat classes now aim for different levels of pressure.
Normal mobs remain less dangerous individually, while:

strong mobs remain noticeable;
-
High Threat enemies demand attention;
-
Extreme Threat enemies remain dangerous even against advanced armor;
-
bosses that already deal very high final damage are prevented from being unnecessarily amplified.
Apotheosis Rebalance
Apotheosis enemies were found to be significantly too weak in v2.2 after the anti-one-shot changes.
v2.3 restores their intended danger.

Apothic Invaders use their own threat behavior.
-
Apothic Elites receive dedicated scaling.
-
Dangerous Invader attacks can remain in the 2–4 hit kill range against appropriate advanced builds.

Their additional difficulty is still distributed heavily toward survivability rather than blindly increasing penetrating damage.

Armor-bypassing attacks are handled separately from conventional physical mitigation.
The goal is to restore the decision-making that existed before:
finding an Apotheosis enemy should be something the player actually thinks about fighting.
Hellmarked Improvements
Hellmarked tiers retain explicit integration:

Elite

Ultra
-
Infernal
Higher tiers receive progressively more pressure without duplicating all of Hellmarked's own internal scaling.
New Player Protection
The anti-one-shot system was changed from broadly suppressing dangerous mobs to a much narrower protection system.
New or weak players can still be protected from unreasonable full-health one-shots from recognized elites/bosses.
However:
-
the attack can still leave them critically injured;
-
a second hit can kill them normally;
-
advanced players do not retain this protection.
The goal is to prevent unfair deaths, not remove danger.
Faster Power Recognition
Player power adaptation was too slow in v2.2.
Changes include:
-
Offensive adaptation greatly accelerated.
-
Defensive adaptation accelerated.
-
Strong equipped weapons provide an immediate conservative offensive seed.
-
Armor, toughness and max health contribute immediately to the initial defensive estimate.
-
Real combat measurements continue refining the profile afterward.
Players should no longer spend several minutes in a new session fighting nearly vanilla mobs while Powered Mobs slowly catches up.
v2.4 — Individual Mob Variants
Why This Was Changed
After fixing mob danger, another problem became apparent:
mobs of the same type were too predictable.
Once a weapon was capable of one-shotting one Zombie, it generally one-shot every similar Zombie.
That made progression feel binary:
cannot one-shot them
→ upgrade weapon
→ now everything instantly dies.
v2.4 adds controlled individual variation.
Common Mob Variants
Common hostile mobs can now spawn as:
Fragile

Approximately x0.50–0.75 HP

Intended to preserve satisfying one-shots.

Reduced contribution from Powered Mobs armor scaling.
Standard
-
Approximately x0.90–1.15 HP
-
Represents the normal expected enemy.
Tough
-
Approximately x1.35–1.85 HP
-
Noticeably harder to kill.
Hardened
-
Approximately x2.30–3.20 HP
-
Rare durable variant intended to occasionally surprise advanced players.
Default Distribution
At low difficulty, approximately:

28% Fragile

50% Standard

18% Tough
-
4% Hardened
At difficulty 250:

18% Fragile

48% Standard

26% Tough
-
8% Hardened
Even at maximum difficulty, some common mobs intentionally remain fragile.
Progression should still occasionally produce:
one hit → dead.
The system simply prevents every enemy from behaving identically.
Persistent Variants
Variant rolls are stored on the entity.
Reloading chunks, restarting the server or using /poweredmobs rescale does not reroll the mob.
A Hardened enemy remains Hardened.
Boss Safety
Strong random variance is primarily intended for low/native-health common mobs.
It automatically fades as native mob health increases.
Bosses, Warden-level enemies, Apothic Invaders and other major threats do not randomly become half-health or triple-health versions through this common-mob lottery.
v2.5 — Dynamic Endgame Scaling
Why This Was Changed
Live testing revealed that the original endgame assumptions were still too conservative.
A player could already reach approximately:
96+ Armor
without requiring the absolute endgame of the modpack.
That demonstrated that using conventional values such as Diamond or even basic Unobtainium armor as a fixed upper reference was not sufficient for large modpacks.
The static limits from previous versions could therefore be reached far too early.
v2.5 removes that assumption.
Immediate Armor Awareness
Powered Mobs now directly reads:

Armor Toughness
-
Maximum Health
to create an immediate defensive floor.
It no longer needs to wait for several combat samples before realizing that a player with extremely high armor is significantly stronger than vanilla.
Observed real mitigation still remains the authoritative long-term measurement.
This means:

armor attributes give immediate awareness;
-
enchantments/effects/modded defenses are learned through real combat;
-
both systems complement each other.
Dynamic Mob Damage Ceiling
The previous total damage safety ceiling was effectively fixed around:

This could become insufficient against extremely defensive builds.
The damage ceiling is now dynamic.
Powered Mobs estimates how much pre-mitigation damage would reasonably be needed based on:

player max health;
-
observed mitigation;
-
threat class;
-
difficulty;
-
current combat performance.
The available ceiling can increase as the build becomes more extreme.
The new absolute safety ceiling is approximately:

This is not an automatic multiplier.
It is only the maximum room Powered Mobs is allowed to use when an extreme conventional defense is still trivializing hostile attacks.
At lower difficulty, the system pursues much less of this available headroom.
At difficulty 250, it is allowed to push much closer to it.
Result
More armor can still make the player stronger.
However:
extremely high armor no longer automatically makes every conventional hostile irrelevant simply because Powered Mobs hit an old static cap.
Dynamic Health Scaling
Mob HP ceilings are no longer treated as fixed x4 / x6 / x8 endgame limits.
Maximum adaptive headroom now reaches approximately:

Again, these are ceilings, not normal multipliers.
Actual scaling remains sublinear.
For example, an enormous increase in player offensive power still results in a much smaller increase in mob HP.
A weapon that is x20 stronger does not create a mob with x20 HP.
The player keeps a major progression advantage.
Faster Offensive Response
Another v2.2 issue was that mob durability could lag far behind the player's current weapon.
v2.5 now uses a fraction of:
-
observed offensive power;
-
equipped weapon power;
-
recent real combat performance
as an immediate minimum offensive signal.
Example:
If the smoothed profile is only:
x2
but current evidence shows approximately:
x20
Powered Mobs can immediately use a substantial fraction of that x20 signal when determining mob durability.
It still does not fully match the weapon.
The new weapon remains substantially stronger.
This simply prevents the world from remaining temporarily scaled for an obsolete weapon tier.
Dynamic Mob Armor
Mob armor scaling has also been expanded.
Previously, added armor was intentionally very limited.
That worked against vanilla and moderate weapons, but became nearly irrelevant against weapons dealing hundreds of damage.
v2.5 allows additional Armor to scale with:

player offensive power;
-
difficulty;
-
mob category;
-
individual variant.
Armor Toughness
Powered Mobs can now also add Armor Toughness.
This is important because large individual hits can strongly reduce the effectiveness of ordinary Armor.
The new system can therefore use a combination of:
-
additional HP;
-
Armor;
-
Armor Toughness;
-
Rupture/burst mechanics
instead of relying exclusively on enormous health pools.
Absolute safety ceilings remain in place so mob attributes cannot grow without limit.
Difficulty Now Expands Scaling Headroom
Difficulty no longer only multiplies current values.
It also controls how aggressively Powered Mobs is allowed to pursue extremely powerful builds.
At low difficulty:
strong endgame equipment can substantially outperform the scaler.
At high difficulty:
Powered Mobs receives more headroom to bring normal mobs, elites and major threats back into relevance.
Difficulty 250 is intentionally designed to challenge equipment far beyond vanilla progression.
Overall Changes Since v2.2
The v2.2 philosophy was correct, but live testing showed that the implementation had become too safe and too easy.
The v2.3–v2.5 series specifically addresses that.
v2.2
Focused heavily on preventing unfair damage and preserving player progression.
Result:
Too many enemies became harmless.
v2.3
Restored actual threat.
Enemies now react to how effective their attacks really are against the current player instead of relying only on their original base damage.
v2.4
Restored unpredictability.
Individual common mobs can now vary greatly in durability, allowing both satisfying one-shots and unexpectedly durable enemies.
v2.5
Restored scalability for heavily modded endgame.
Health, armor, toughness and damage headroom can now expand according to the actual power of the players rather than assumptions based on vanilla-like equipment values.
Current Design Goal
Powered Mobs does not attempt to keep every fight identical regardless of equipment.
A player who spends hours creating powerful equipment should become significantly stronger.
However:
-
normal mobs should not become completely ignorable too early;
-
strong enemies should still feel stronger than common mobs;
-
Warden-level threats should preserve their identity;
-
Apotheosis and Hellmarked enemies should remain encounters worth respecting;
-
some common mobs should still die instantly;
-
others should unexpectedly survive;
-
extremely powerful weapons should remain extremely powerful;
-
expensive endgame armor should remain extremely valuable;
-
difficulty 200–250 should still be capable of challenging heavily modded builds.
The intended result is:
Progression makes you stronger. Powered Mobs keeps the world dangerous enough for that strength to matter.
