What's new

For Minecraft 1.21.1 on NeoForge and Fabric: download the jar for your loader. Both need Sable, GeckoLib and Player Animation Library; Fabric also needs Fabric API and Forge Config API Port.

Pirates 'n' Ships 0.1.0, the first public release: real block ships that float, flood and sink, sailed by the wind and worked by a crew, in a sea of ports, pirates, navy patrols and monsters. Every feature has a server config switch.

It went out without an in-game playtest round, so reports on the issue tracker are welcome. Every wooden block of the mod, from railings and oar benches to the helm, the capstan, the crow's nest and the cargo crates, comes in every vanilla wood and in the woods of eleven wood mods when they are installed (see docs/woods.md); 1.0.0 follows the playtests.

Ships and sailing

  • Build a ship from any blocks and launch her at the Helm; sneak-use the helm to turn her back into blocks.
  • Dry hulls below the waterline; breaches, flooding between compartments, listing and sinking.
  • Fight a leak with the Bilge Pump and the Hull Patch; rejoin a hull shot in two with the Shipwright's Toolkit.
  • A world-wide wind from the weather; square sails between Yards, triangular sails on Cleats, set at the Sail Winch.
  • Steer by turning the wheel; ships float level as built and heel in a gust.
  • The anchor on a chain at the Capstan, the Mooring Ring, Oars and the Oak Oar Bench.
  • Visible waves that rock ships, wind streaks, a wake; a ship HUD and a ship screen at the helm.
  • Name Boards, figureheads, tall flagpoles, the Crow's Nest, Ratlines, railings, rope railings and bulwarks with gun ports, Hammocks.
  • Dyed sails and banners on large sails; cargo weight that trims the ship; sloops built to order by shipwrights.

Crew

  • Hire hands at the Harbor Master's Desk, order them with the Captain's Whistle.
  • Crew hoist, reef and furl, pump, load and fire, row, work the anchor, hold a course, keep a lookout and board.
  • Wages, rations, water, rum, morale, scurvy, desertion and mutiny.

Combat

  • Swordplay with the Rapier, Cutlass and Saber: slash, thrust, guard, parry, riposte, stamina.
  • The Pistol and the Musket.
  • The two-block Cannon with Cannonballs, Chain Shot and Grapeshot; the Swivel Gun on the rail.
  • The Grappling Hook, rope hauling and sliding, the Boarding Plank and the "Board!" order.

The world

  • Seafarer villages, pirate islands with buried treasure, navy outposts and wrecks.
  • Factions, convoys on sea lanes, navy patrols, pirate raids, NPC ships you can fight, plunder and capture.
  • Markets with moving prices, contracts, harbour dues, fences, Treasure Maps and quests.
  • Sharks, the Kraken, waterspouts and whirlpools; cold water, rum, the Sea Chest and the Paddle.
  • Your own Chart of every coast you pass, and Map Tiles that join into boards.

The law

  • Criminal score, bounties, the Bounty Proof and the Notice Board.
  • Shackles, the brig, turn-ins, fines, ransom and the press-gang.
  • Flags and false colours, striking colours; navy ranks, pirate infamy, the letter of marque, reputation.

The Captain's Almanac

  • The in-game guide, given on first join: index, bookmarks, recipe panels and Show me scenes.
  • JEI information pages when JEI is installed.

Requirements

  • Minecraft 1.21.1, Java 21.
  • NeoForge 21.1.228 or newer, or Fabric with Fabric Loader 0.19.3, Fabric API 0.116.12+1.21.1 and Forge Config API Port 21.1.3 or newer.
  • Sable 2.0.6 (below 3.0), GeckoLib 4.9.3, Player Animation Library 1.1.6+mc.1.21.1 or newer.
  • Bundled in the jar: Ponder 1.0.87 and Flywheel 1.0.6.
  • Optional: JEI 19.39.0.372 or newer.

Worlds and config from a pre-release

  • What a world from a development build keeps and loses under 0.1.0 is listed in save-compatibility.md. Back up the world first.
  • An existing config file keeps its old values; new settings get their default. To take every 0.1.0 default, delete pirates_n_ships-server.toml in config (or in the world's serverconfig folder if you put a copy there) and pirates_n_ships-client.toml in config; they are written again on the next start. Settings that no longer exist are removed from the file (the old file is kept as a .bak), and values outside a new range are clamped.
  • Structures are a little denser in 0.1.0 and their spacing is a real setting now (world.structures.seafarer_village.spacing, world.structures.navy_outpost.spacing, world.structures.pirate_island.spacing, each with its separation, in chunks), and convoys sail between ports up to 6000 blocks apart (world_simulation.voyages.convoy_max_distance). An old config file keeps the old, sparser numbers and 3000; delete those lines for the new ones. A changed spacing applies to chunks generated afterwards.

Known limits

  • Most of the work aboard has no sound of its own yet.
  • A sword in hand takes the right mouse button (guard and parry): swap items to use doors or the helm.
  • Only the NPC duelists feint; no directional attack and parry mode.
  • Chain shot does not tear triangular sails; the Swivel Gun takes neither chain shot nor grapeshot.
  • No logbook, hull paint or wanted poster yet.
  • Far from the world origin (beyond about 8,000 blocks) ship physics gets coarser: speeds drift and a ship pushed against a wall may not report itself stuck. Keep your harbours nearer spawn for now.
  • Fabric needs Mod Menu for the config screen.
  • JEI is held at 19.39.0.372 until the mod moves to a newer NeoForge.

The full history of the work is in the commit log.
