Pet Overhaul

Pet Overhaul is a mod focused on making Minecraft pets and mounts more useful in combat, travel, protection, and utility. It mainly upgrades wolves, cats, horses, llamas and more!

This mod deeply improves wolves, cats, horses, llamas, and other tamed creatures, adding new combat, defense, travel, and utility mechanics. Equip your wolves with armor, save your dog with a Totem of Undying, turn your cats into agile fighters, travel through forests with improved horses, and let your llamas transport villagers more easily.

🐺 Dogs

Wolves can now wear Armor that protects them during combat. These armor pieces have durability, are visually rendered on the wolf, and absorb damage before your pet gets hurt.

You can also give your dog a Totem of Undying. If the wolf is about to die, the totem will activate, save it, and grant it totem effects. This also includes the Dog Rage mechanic, which makes your wolf faster and stronger when it is in danger.

Dog Changes

  • New Wolf Armors.

Right-click your tamed wolf with wolf armor to equip it.

Right-click with shears to remove the armor.

Armor absorbs incoming damage before the wolf is hurt.

Armor durability is reduced by the rounded-up damage amount.

When the armor durability runs out, it breaks.

- Wolf armor does not protect against some damage types as the vanilla one, including:

Drowning – Freezing - Suffocation – Magic - Indirect magic – Thorns – Wither - Void damage - World border damage - Entity cramming - Generic kill damage

- Adds four wolf armor:

-Iron Wolf Armor - Durability: 72

-Gold Wolf Armor - Durability: 64

-Diamond Wolf Armor - Durability: 128

-Netherite Wolf Armor - Durability: 256

All wolf armor items appear in the Combat creative tab.

  • Wolf Totem

A wolf can be given a Totem of Undying by shift-right-clicking it with a totem.

The totem is consumed unless the player is in Creative.

The wolf gains a visible totem collar texture.

If the wolf would die, the death is canceled.

The totem is consumed from the wolf.

The wolf is restored to 1 HP.

Existing effects are removed.

- The wolf receives:

Regeneration IV for 45 seconds

Absorption II for 5 seconds

Fire Resistance I for 40 seconds

- The owner receives the message: Your dog's totem activated!

  • Dog Rage

Tamed wolves gain an emergency rage mechanic.

When a tamed wolf is hurt and would fall below 30% health, but not die:

It activates Dog Rage if not on cooldown.

The wolf gains Strength II for 10 seconds.

The wolf gains Speed II for 10 seconds.

The wolf uses the angry wolf texture while rage is active.

Cooldown: 5 minutes.

🐱 Cats

Tamed cats will no longer only scare creepers away: now they can actively defend their owner. They will attack enemies that hurt you or creatures that you attack, turning them into agile and dangerous allies.

They can also dodge incoming attacks with a high chance, leaping away from danger. Their special attack allows them to jump onto an enemy, stay attached for a few seconds, and deal constant damage, making them especially useful against creepers.

Cat Changes

  • Cats become combat pets.

Tamed cats now receive:

Attack damage attribute: 3

Melee attack AI

Owner defense AI

They attack entities that hurt their owner.

They attack entities their owner attacks.

Tamed cats also dodge attacks, with a 90% chance to dodge an incoming attack leaping away from the attacker.

  • Cat Special Attack

Tamed cats can perform a special attack on nearby targets when a valid enemy target is within 4 blocks:

The cat jumps onto/rides the target during 10 seconds. The target takes 4 damage every second. The special attack has a 5-minute cooldown.

Against creepers:

The cat can use this attack without the normal cooldown. The creeper’s swelling is suppressed while the cat is attached.

🐴 Horses

Horses receive improvements designed to make exploration smoother and more natural. When saddled and ridden, their controls feel more independent, allowing the horse to keep its own direction instead of fully copying the player’s view.

They can also move better through forests, passing through leaves from certain angles to avoid getting stuck between trees. In water, ridden horses float better, making rivers and flooded areas less frustrating to cross.

  • Horses gain improved riding and travel behavior.

Saddled horses ridden by players use independent controls:

The horse keeps its own rotation instead of directly matching the rider’s view, like boats.

Forward movement uses the player’s forward input.

Backward movement is reduced to 25% speed.

Sideways input turns the horse by fixed turn steps.

Now horses and horse passengers can pass through leaf blocks from the side/below, making forest travel easier.

Mounted horses float better in water:

If a ridden horse is deep enough in water, it receives upward motion.

✨ New armor enchantments

The mod adds special enchantments for wolf and horse armor. Impenetrable allows projectiles that hit a protected pet or mount to be reflected, with the chance increasing depending on the enchantment level.

It also adds Dodge, a horse armor enchantment that can prevent the player from taking projectile damage while riding. These enchantments can appear in vanilla structure loot-table chests.

Adds two new enchantments.

  • Impenetrable

Wolf armor

  • Loot

You can find Dodge or Impenetrable enchanted books to several vanilla chest loot tables, using chances modeled around diamond horse armor availability. Also horse armor found there has a 50% chance to receive a random pet armor enchantment.

🦙 Llamas

Tamed llamas can now transport villagers. If an adult tamed llama is near a villager, the villager can automatically mount it, making villager transportation much easier without relying on boats, minecarts, or awkward paths.

You can also dismount the villager using shift-click, placing them in front of the player. This feature makes moving villagers simpler, especially when creating farms, custom villages, or trading areas.

Tamed adult llamas can carry villagers.

If a tamed adult llama is near a villager, the villager automatically mounts it.

Shift-right-click a llama carrying a villager to dismount the villager.

Shift-right-click the villager while it is riding a llama also dismount it.

The villager is moved in front of the player.

After dismounting, the villager has a 3-second cooldown before it can mount a llama again.

🔷 Beacons for your pets

Beacon effects can now also apply to tamed creatures owned by a player. This means your pets can benefit from effects like speed, resistance, strength, or other active beacon effects.

This improvement makes beacon-protected bases more useful for all your companions, not just the player. Your pets will stay better prepared while inside the beacon's range.
