Description

PCA Perms

Permission groups for school servers, managed in game: everyone is automatically a student or a teacher, and every command and every mod's permissions can be given or taken away from an editor screen.

PCA Perms is a permissions mod made for teaching. Instead of making teachers ops (which gives them /stop, /op and everything else), you give the teacher group exactly what teachers need. Students are a group too, so you can take things away from them in one place. Everything is set up in an in-game editor, with no website or config files needed, and every change works straight away.

It was made by Pixel Creators Academy for our teaching servers and is built to link with the other PCA mods, but it works with any Forge 1.20.1 mod and with Minecraft's own commands.

What it's like to use

  1. Install it and start the server. There are already three groups: student (everyone), teacher and admin. Ops and anyone on the PCA Classroom teacher list are teachers automatically, with a gold [Teacher] before their name in chat.
  2. A new teacher, Mr Smith, starts today. Type /perms, open the Players tab, pick MrSmith and click teacher. He can now use /class, /plot admin, /puzzle, /gamemode and /tp, but not /stop or /op.
  3. Students keep using /plot visit to wreck the mood during lessons? Open the Groups tab, pick student, type command.plot.visit and press Deny. Teachers aren't affected.
  4. Amy is helping run an event. Make a helpers group with an aqua [Helper] prefix, give it command.time and command.weather, and put Amy in it.
  5. Not sure why someone can or can't do something? Type the permission on their page and the editor tells you: "command.gamemode: allowed by group teacher".

Features

Automatic students and teachers

  • Everyone who isn't a teacher is in the student group, without adding anyone.
  • Teachers are players added to the teacher group, plus (each can be turned off) ops and players on PCA Classroom's teacher list.
  • An admin group inherits teacher and has everything.
  • Groups have a prefix and colour shown in chat and the player list ([Teacher] MrSmith), a weight (higher wins when groups disagree) and can inherit other groups.

Controls every command and every mod

  • Every command from Minecraft and every mod has a permission: /gamemode is command.gamemode, /plot admin reset is command.plot.admin.reset. Allow it and a player can use it even if it's normally ops-only; deny it and they can't, even an op. Players' games only show the commands they're allowed to use.
  • Forge permissions: PCA Perms becomes Forge's permission handler, so any mod that uses Forge's permission system asks it, e.g. forge.use_entity_selectors (whether a player can use @a, @p and so on in commands).
  • Wildcards: pcaplots.*, command.plot.*, or * for everything.
  • Nothing breaks when you install it: anything without a rule works exactly as before.

The in-game editor

  • Groups tab: every group with its prefix, colour, weight, inherited groups and rules.
  • Players tab: search players, click to put them in groups, give them rules of their own, and check what any permission comes out as for them, and why.
  • Suggestions as you type: every permission the server knows about, from every mod and command. Press Tab to take the first one.
  • Click a rule to flip it between Allowed and Denied, or ✕ to remove it.
  • Changes are checked and saved by the server and apply to everyone online at once.

Made for PCA mods

  • PCA Classroom: its teacher list is the teacher group, and the teacher group are Classroom teachers (pcaclassroom.teacher).
  • PCA Plots: the teacher group can build anywhere in the plot world and use /plot admin (pcaplots.teacher).
  • PCA Puzzle: pcapuzzle.build, pcapuzzle.items and pcapuzzle.unlock for its commands, given to teachers. pcapuzzle.bypass (keys not used up, no Master Key cooldown) lets a teacher test a puzzle in adventure mode.
  • PCA Puzzle Plots: pcapuzzleplots.use for /puzzleplot, given to teachers.
  • PCA Currency: pcacurrency.balance and pcacurrency.admin for its commands, given to teachers.
  • PCA Quiz: pcaquiz.edit (setting up question blocks) and pcaquiz.manage (/quiz), given to teachers.
  • PCA Shop: pcashop.admin (teacher shops, and editing anyone's shop), given to teachers.
  • PCA Games: pcagames.manage (running games such as red light, green light), given to teachers.
  • PCA Quests: pcaquests.manage (making and giving out quests, checking students' work, the class view), given to teachers.

Everything can also be done by command

Command Example
/perms Opens the editor
/perms group <group> allow / deny / unset <permission> /perms group student deny command.plot.visit
/perms user <players> add / remove <group> /perms user MrSmith add teacher
/perms user <players> allow / deny / unset <permission> /perms user Amy allow command.time
/perms user <player> check <permission> /perms user Amy check command.gamemode
/perms group create / delete <name> /perms group create helpers
/perms group <group> inherit / prefix / colour / weight ... /perms group helpers prefix Helper
/perms groups, /perms nodes, /perms reload

Permissions are saved in config/pcaperms/permissions.json, which is easy to read, back up and edit by hand. Because it's in the config folder, a world reset keeps everyone's permissions. Every change made in the editor is written to the server log.

Requirements and dependencies

No other mods are required.

Mod
PCA Classroom 0.1.1 or newer Optional Its teacher list is linked with the teacher group
PCA Plots 0.1.2 or newer Optional Plot teachers come from the teacher group
PCA Puzzle 0.3.2, PCA Puzzle Plots 0.1.1, PCA Currency 0.1.2 or newer Optional Their permissions are given to teachers from the start
PCA Leaderboard 0.1.0 or newer Optional Teachers get pcaleaderboard.manage (run the leaderboard, and don't earn points)
PCA Auction 0.1.0 or newer Optional Teachers get pcaauction.manage (run storage unit auctions)
  • Minecraft 1.20.1, Forge 47 or newer
  • Install on the server. Install it in your own game too to use the editor screen. Students don't need it, and staff without it can use the /perms commands.
  • Use PCA Perms or another permissions mod (such as LuckPerms), not both. To keep another mod in charge of Forge permissions, turn off useAsForgeHandler in pcaperms-common.toml.

Standalone

PCA Perms doesn't need the Pixel Creators Academy server or any PCA service. It works on any Forge 1.20.1 server, with or without the other PCA mods.

Getting started

  1. Put the jar in the server's mods folder, and in your own game's mods folder for the editor. Start the server.
  2. As an op, type /perms. Open Players, pick a teacher and click teacher.
  3. Look through the teacher group's rules and add or take away what your teachers need.
  4. Settings (ops as teachers, the Classroom link, name prefixes) are in config/pcaperms-common.toml.
