PCA Leaderboard
A live student leaderboard for Minecraft lessons: points for games, quests, badges, quizzes, puzzle doors and coins, on a web page the server hosts itself.
PCA Leaderboard gives students points for what they do in the other PCA mods and puts them on a leaderboard. The Minecraft server hosts the leaderboard as a web page, so you can put it on the classroom projector and watch the points come in live. Teachers switch categories on and off, change how many points things are worth, and give bonus points, either in game or on the page.
It was made by Pixel Creators Academy for teaching on Minecraft servers and works in any Forge 1.20.1 world or server. It's standalone: it doesn't need the PCA server, and it doesn't need any other PCA mod (it gives points for whichever ones are installed).
What it's like to use
- You start the server. The log says Leaderboard page: http://192.168.1.20:8125/, and you get the same link in chat when you join.
- You open it on the projector and press A+ for big text.
- Amy wins a round of Block Party: +10 points on the leaderboard (Games: 1st place in Block Party). Her name jumps to the top of the board and flashes.
- Ben answers the question on a quiz door (+3) and finishes the Build a shelter quest (+10 and +5 for its badge).
- At the end of the lesson you click the Quiz tab and pick Today to see who answered the most questions, then download the points as a CSV.
- At the start of next term: Start a new season. Everyone's points are archived and the board starts again from 0.
What earns points
| Category | From | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Games | Finishing places in PCA Games (red light, Block Party, Simon Says, Floor is Lava, and from 0.5.0 Archery, Hot Potato and parkour and maze races) | 1st 10, 2nd 7, 3rd 5, others 2 |
| Quests | Finishing a PCA Quests quest (once per quest) | 10 |
| Badges | Earning a badge (once per badge) | 5 |
| Quiz | A right answer in PCA Quiz (once per question block, door or marker) | 3 |
| Puzzles | Opening a locked PCA Puzzle door with its key (once per door) | 5 |
| Coins | Reward money from quests, quizzes and teachers (PCA Currency) | 1 per £1 |
| Bonus | Points a teacher gives by hand | any |
Every category can be switched off and every value changed. Teachers don't earn points unless you turn that on. Shop sales between students don't count, so money can't be passed back and forth for points.
The web page
- Live board with a podium for the top 3, refreshing every few seconds
- A tab for every category, and filters for the whole season, this week or today
- Click a student to see everything they've earned points for
- A "latest points" feed
- Big text for projectors
- Teacher view (password from
/leaderboard password): categories on and off, point values, bonus points, remove a mistake, hide a player, PCA usernames, CSV download, new season
The server picks the first free port from 8125 and listens on your network, so any computer in the room can open it. Set a fixed port in the settings if you prefer.
Commands
- Everyone:
/leaderboard(or/lb),/leaderboard top quiz week,/leaderboard me,/leaderboard web, and in PCA mode/leaderboard iam amaraa42 - Teachers:
/leaderboard bonus @a 5 Great teamwork,/leaderboard category coins off,/leaderboard points quizCorrect 5,/leaderboard teachers count,/leaderboard hide Guest1,/leaderboard password,/leaderboard newseason confirm,/leaderboard reload
The teacher commands need the pcaleaderboard.manage permission: ops by default, and PCA Perms' teacher group from PCA Perms 0.1.7.
PCA mode
For Pixel Creators Academy clubs, PCA mode also posts every point to the student leaderboards in the PCA staff portal, using a system key in config/pcaleaderboard/settings.json. The portal gets a Minecraft tab with everyone's total, and a tab for each category. Students are matched by their coding username: on the club server that's their Minecraft name, and otherwise they type /leaderboard iam theirusername once. Parkour times from PCA Games go to their own course boards on the portal, where the fastest time counts. Points are queued, so nothing is lost if the internet drops. Everyone else can ignore this: local mode is the default and needs no setup.
Requirements
- Required: Minecraft 1.20.1, Forge 47 or newer
- Server only: players don't need it installed
- Optional (points come from these): PCA Games 0.4.1+ (0.5.0+ for parkour times), PCA Quests 0.1.2+, PCA Quiz 0.1.1+, PCA Puzzle 0.3.6+, PCA Currency 0.1.3+
- Optional: PCA Perms 0.1.7+ (gives teachers the permission)
Saved data
Points are saved with the world in pcaleaderboard/ (a line per award, so nothing is lost in a crash), with older seasons in pcaleaderboard/archive/. Settings are in config/pcaleaderboard/settings.json.
